Is there any kind of free software to monitor CPU temperature (and any other critical component if necessary) in real time?

I have used Coretemp (my favorite which monitors CPU only)

and HWMonitor, not quite as slick in my opinion but it monitors a few other temps as an added bonus.

Both monitor in real time and coretemp has a logging function if you want to keep a hardcopy record of the temps of the CPU

I just followed your advice and put HWMonitor on my Dell laptop with a GeoForce Go 7900 GS. The GPU temp is 89 C ot 192 F. I suspect that is very high for a temp.

My fans also dont go on.. is there anyway to turn them on... any program to kick them into gear?

on your dell laptop? those don't give you much control, you can use SpeedFan but first you will see its showing you lower temps so you need to adjust its temp so that they show correct temps (match them with hwm's temps) then you can see what ever few fans your laptop has it can see and control or not.

what model dell do you have?

that model has a huge problem, I had one, it stopped working also and it was running hot too. when it stopped working I called dell and let them know what I thought of the whole thing, they sent me a brand new 1720 after that.

anyways your laptop may have 2 fans period, and you can't control them.

That would be awsome if I could get that done. I still have a hardware warranty on it. I have called a lot to try and get it fixed but after the 1 hour plus i spend having them do the typical diagnosis (they never find anything wrong) they want me to drop $130 on a Dell technition to come to my house to fix it.

How did u get them to send a new one. I bought this in March 2006. Also the pannel on the screen broke... the screws poped out and i cant open or close the computer with out doing a lot of damage. I would LOVE for Dell to give me a new one.

Also I just got my DS desktop... I LOVE it.

well mine just burned out or something, cause it would not start, they sent a tech to change the mobo after they sent me a new power cord and needless to say both did not fix it, the tech called them and said he was not sure what it was.

I had warranty on it, they wanted me to send it in to fix it and I raised hell. then I got the new laptop.

I didn't have to pay for the tech to comeout either, they won't help you unless the laptop is not working.
