Using a Dell 24" monitor here 1920 x 1200, wide screen.
I strongly recommend you go with a wide screen what ever you get

Cha-ching? As one review said "It's an opinion splitter" the fact it's orange lol. I guess it's something of a marketing ploy that Acer went and called it the "Gamer Monitor" lol. I dunno reading the review it doesn't look bad at all spec wise. Even IF the 50000:1 contrast ratio is enormously high. (From a professional artist etc. perspective the color etc isn't there if you were paying for a monitor meant for your profession or something, but as a gamer, apparently it lives up to the hype it's giving.)

tang526, contrast ratio and response time on lcd's is a really foggy area, since there is no real way to test them but manufacturers keep putting numbers out anyways.
to check for response time look at from black to black, not that its accurate but its much better then gray to gray. resolution is important, what is the max resolution it can handle. |

If you get the Dell 2408 make sure you ask for the A01 firmware update. They had some really input lag issues (as well as other issues) with the 00 unit.

contrast ratio doesn't mean anything because every manufacturer measures them differently.
Since you're concerned about contrast... I'm assuming you are getting this monitor for editing or movies. So look for IPS or VA panels. Avoid TN at all costs. But if the monitor is just going to be used for gaming and everyday use. A TN panel is fine. |

Hey skyR, why don't we have a thread of our users, full of recommendations/review of monitors, so our users can refer to that. this would be great for people that don't know what to get at all or any clue on how monitors work.
what do you think? |

monitors for gaming I don't think I'm the best person to ask, HM and others that play all the time, how about yourself.
personally I love my dell 24" but can't tell you how it would do in games. and I'm sure its not up to par with current lcds |

Well the monitors were split into several categories right? Gaming for the ms, decent contrast... or well how it looks in game with the black/white tones, hues etc.
Professional/artist type monitors where it doesn't really matter much about ms, the color gamut (whatever that means lol) and so on. I dunno that's what I surmised from random readings of monitors. There's also those calibration tools that can potentially make a monitor look good or should I say even better. Edited by Axel Daemon - 20 Sep 2008 at 3:40am |

Let just have people how own their monitor and what to recommend it, do so.
otherwise its gonna be based on reviews not personal use. you know what I mean? |

Never had a problem with it, no dead pixels, great contrast (which you could adjust anyway).
Great resolution. Works for gamin' w/ its 6ms.
Got it as a gift, otherwise its very expensive. Edited by Nomak - 20 Sep 2008 at 10:39am |

I also have a monitor question. I will be replacing my 19"CRT with my new unit.
I was in Costco over the weekend and they had the same model Samsung that DSO sells. The right side of the panel was noticeably dark.
I think I read someplace that it is a symptom of TN panels. But now I can't find that info source. I have looked at the newegg reviews and googled but can't find anyone complaining about this problem.
The panel was a Samsung 245 BW. So, do TN panels do this or was the some other cause.
I know the other draw backs of TNs such as viewing angle, true color etc.
I hope someone can help me. We are getting close to Nelalem and I need to line up my ducks.

Was it dark even if you were directly in front of the monitor?

Do they allow you to mess with the settings? I can imagine some other person may have messed with it. Since I realized that even if you get to physically check it out, the settings may not always have been properly set up.
