https://www.polygon.com/2020/9/1/21409307/nvidia-rtx-3070-3080-3090-specs-release-date-price-gpu-geforce

It takes up three slots and must need a sh!tload of cooling but its price-points will apparently be lower than the high-end 2080s. I wonder when DS will start to design builds around these behemoths! As usual, I feel a little wistful about my once state-of-the-art GPU (GeForce RTX 2080 8GB) getting overtaken!

There was just a conversation (it was a podcast so I was not part of the conversation, just listening to it) that I heard today about the RTX 30series. Since 2 of the show hosts have RTX 2080, they both said for the cost the performance gain is not worth to them to jump to the RTX 3080. I realize this is HIGHLY subjective, a lot to do with one's priorities and cash flow especially, but I tend to agree with the podcast.
My desktop only has a 1080 but for me to go to the 3080 it would be like a $1200 investment, since my CPU is only a i7 - 8700k, which would bottleneck a 3080. So I'd have to upgrade the mobo to support 10th gen, plus the CPU, plus the card purchase. I *MIGHT* do at some point in time but since I just ordered a DS laptop it won't be within the next couple months at least.

Sorry went off on a tangent, I was simply saying a 1080 to a 3080 is a significant upgrade, IF only upgrading the GPU very good price:performance gain there.

If I had a 2080 like you though I'd probably pass , at least for a good 6 months or so on the RTX 30 series.

Yeah, I'm not tempted to shoehorn a 3080 into my DS rig. Like a lot of people, I tend to "leapfrog" a generation so that by the time the next one comes along, I will be able to make a better case for a whole new system. I used to update components more than I do now.

So only the 3090 takes up 3 slots. The 24th can't come soon enough.

"... since my CPU is only a i7 - 8700k, which would bottleneck a 3080."

That is highly unlikely.

I meant to come back and update that earlier, I just got busy and then too tired. LOL.

My co-worker is much more into custom PC rigs than I am these days (which is odd because I used to keep up to date with all the tech hardware)

... Anyway my co-worker was like "WHAT?! Where did you read about a 3080 bottle necking a i7-8700k? " Then he goes do you realize how great of a CPU the 8700k was, and so then I looked up articles ....I mean current ones (august 2020) and the reviewer still praised the CPU quite a bit and showed benches with a 10th gen CPU and the 8700k stacked up MUCH closer than would have thought.

At any rate, I will consider the 3080 now more seriously as an upgrade to my 1080. (I'm most likely not buying when they first release, not that a lot of stock will be available anyway until after the new year I'm guessing).

Well said. I have an 8700K and was feeling a little "say what now?"

I'm not sure about supply, but the original release was for June, so they may well have been stocking up this whole time.
