my budget is 2500 but i would like to get down to maybe 2200 if possible. i been browsing this site weekly and drooling over rigs but each rig i make is always 2500 or so. which is fine, but i think maybe im buying upgrades etc on things i may not need. my goal for the computer will be mostly gaming (LoL, MMOs, and FPS games), watching movies, youtube, and hopefully streaming. I should also mention i am computer illiterate and dont understand alot of the technical stuff. my reasoning is "cost more must mean better".

here is a rig i made off some other user's suggestions. i currently have a digital storm comp from 2010 which runs great. it is a i7 2800 and never had an issue except when the power supply died a few months back. i plan to give this rig to my stepson though as his current machine is on it's last leg. it is a 7 yr old comp and it is time we let it rest in peace.

first question is the motherboard. do i need the gryphon z87? i want to make sure i have stuff that will last me awhile as i usually keep rigs for a long time as u can tell from above. i dont do alot of upgrading. i usually just buy a new rig altogether. I currently have the haf x cooler case and i love it so i chose that again. anyways let me know. i could probably lower the SSD drive to 180 as right now i only have an 80 SSD intel so 256 may be much more than i would need. the SSD will be just for games while the 2nd drive be for movies and the like.

is that power supply a good one? should i upgrade it? i never had a Radiator Liquid CPU for my cooling device. worth it? not worth it? i also upgraded the fans to 6 fans. again that might be overkill i dunno. i dont want the rig to ever be close to getting hot. i think i upgraded the fans on my current rig when i bought it back in 2010.

the gtx 770 a solid card? i use a ati radeon 5870 now and it's be great. last question...should i stick with windows 7 or go with windows 8? i think i read somewhere windows 8 was having issues? anyways sorry for all the questions. i usually spend several weeks getting people's opinions and reading other posts before i finally buy. here is the rig. let me know what i can change.

Looking at your requirements, here's a build that hits your $2.2k budget...

858713 - $2191

Things I changed:
1. i5 4670k - Only 3% slower than i7 4770k on single threading duties - 95% of gaming uses only single threads. Your not running Photoshop or any other graphics software, so the 4-core single thread CPU will work fine.
2. ASUS Z87-C - Since you mentioned you don't really upgrade/plan on upgrading, I switched you to the Z87-C as it's equally good as the others but doesn't allow SLI of the 770. Switch back to the Gryphon if this is something you want.
3. Corsair 750W - Same as #2; if you have no plans of upgrading then a 750W PSU is more then sufficient for a single GPU application. Again, if you are planning on SLI 770's, then you will need the 1050W PSU.
4a. Blue LED Fans - Adds a little flare to your case. The HAF-X case has excellent airflow and this will save you a few dollars over the Corsair 120mm.
4b. LED Lighting - Now, I didn't actually add this to keep budget under $2.2k. But it is really nice if you can afford the few extra dollars...
5. Windows 8 - Better choice going into the future. MS DX11.1 is better suited for Win8 than Win7. Arwen mentioned this advantage on another post (Thanks Arwen, for this little nugget of knowledge!).

If your not set on the HAF-X case, here's a similar build for somebody else in the $2200 range from DS's Virtue lineup. This one would be upgradable to 2x SLI 770's.

858718 - $2287

If you're set on the HAF-X case, the i7 CPU and ability to 2x SLI your 770's, then the build you have already created will be worth every penny...

The Gryphon also has a 5-year vs 3-year warranty. This maybe why he selected it.

EDIT: Some features of DirectX 11.1 will not be supported on Windows 7. I had said it wouldn't be supported at all and that was incorrect. I believe that DirectX 12 will not be supported on Windows 7.

ok thanks guys. the i5 is only 3% slower eh? interesting. i have a i7 930 2800 in my current rig. i feel i want to stay with that even though it's 130 more. i think ill stick with the z87 for 2 reasons. a) longer warranty and b) i like options. so in case someday i do want to SLI i like to have that option.

ok so for what i want to do, looks like 2500 is going to be the going price then. i dont have to have the haf case but it's what i have now and i always loved it. people always comment on it too haha. they come over and are like "wow ur case! wtf'.

ok ill definitely go with windows 8 then. u guys were a big help. dont know if im still ready to buy yet. my fear is this stuff will go on sale a week after i buy it. last time when i bought my first rig my DS, i was about to place an order but decided to wait till the following week till i got my next pay check. turned out it was a good thing, cuz they had some 20% sale on parts. so instead of paying 2500 or so last time, i paid 2200 even with shipping.

Glad to help out and show what options are available. In the end, the choice is yours but at least you know what's out there.

That's the trouble with sales... They sneak up on you. But if you always waited for a sale and/or the next best thing, you'd probably never actually purchase anything...

Hey Godhand456, I just ordered my system with the Haf X and the corsair 120mm fan upgrade. A digital storm rep contacted me and said its actually a downgrade (the Haf X fans are all 200/220mm) but they are able to add an additional fan on top if you want them to. It's cheaper and better keeping stock fans and only adding one. Also, with the money you save, you can upgrade from blue led fans to the led remote light package and get a full spectrum of colors and effects to really show off your new system. Hope this helps some and best of luck with the new tower of power!

Keep upgradability in mind. I have had my system for almost 5 years and just added a new video card recently to keep it up to date as least as far as gaming.
