OK i think my previous method of asking a few questions at a time in different places is innefficient so here it is... hopefully everything i ever need to ask right here.
First off some info:
Budget: anything up to around $2700
Uses: gaming anything from supcom to spore, internet use, watching movies, playing music, i got lots of vid files so hard drive needs to be big, and possibly for schoolwork (UGHHH)
I Already Have: mouse (lol thats it)
Other: remember i do live in Canada in case that factors in
OK HERE WE GO QUESTION TIME!!!
1. do i want crossfire 4850s or 1x 4870?
2. is nvidia graphics a better choice?
3. does all the motherboards offered here work with all the RAM??
4. what do the air cooling stages do? what is best for me?
5. about how much can DS OC my processor, gpu, and ram? (Say i get a q9450)
6. what does the OS tweaking do?
7. how much would all this (5 and 6) affect my performance?
8. with the OC would i need more cooling?
9. what things dont i need that could help me stay within budget... eg i only want a single dvd drive
10. is raid 0 cheaper than getting 1 hard drive of equal sizes? (2x 500gb raid vs 1x 1tb) Or do i have it completely wrong?
11. what is a good monitor?
OK thats all but please take a crack at as many questions as you can from now on i will be updating this list with more (MORE???) questions from time to time if need to and any help is greatly appreciated. I really would have no idea what to do without everyone on these forums.

Hey Darkwing... Most of these are just opinion. You're going to get a different answer from each different person:
1. do i want crossfire 4850s or 1x 4870? 2x4850's are better than 1x4870
2. is nvidia graphics a better choice? Much
3. does all the motherboards offered here work with all the RAM?? No...
4. what do the air cooling stages do? what is best for me? Stage 2 is for better cooling on the CPU, stage 3 is for the 850si case. We can do some slight mods with Stage 3, but to get your best value, you would need the 850 case.
5. about how much can DS OC my processor, gpu, and ram? (Say i get a q9450) We do not guarantee overclocks. Each chip and configuration is different. we would need a configuration to give you an estimate.
6. what does the OS tweaking do? it disables all the unnecessary services that's running in the background.
7. how much would all this (5 and 6) affect my performance? Again, we would need a full configuration from you.
8. with the OC would i need more cooling? Of course!
9. what things dont i need that could help me stay within budget... eg i only want a single dvd drive... you're on the right track. Just use common sense, if you don't think you'll use it, then you don't select it. Then when you do come up with a config, just post it here for review before you buy.
10. is raid 0 cheaper than getting 1 hard drive of equal sizes? (2x 500gb raid vs 1x 1tb) Or do i have it completely wrong? You have it wrong. It's always cheaper to buy 1 drive than 2.
11. what is a good monitor? SAMSUNG FTW!!! |

1. I think you wants nvidia instead of ATI
2. check answer to number 1. 3. if the mombo says ddr3 then it works with that, if it says ddr2 then it works with that 4. cooling is used to help you over clock your processor so you can get a faster speed, eg., you get a q9450 which is at 2.6GHz and you can over clock that to run at say 3.2GHz. Now liquid cooling will get your fastest/most stable results. which is best for you? stage 3 or if you want to have great OC then liquid cooling. 5. check answer to question 4. 6. check answer to question 4. 7. going from 2.6 to 3.2 is a pretty good leap in performance. 8. check answer to question 4. 9. that depends on what you are getting. I will configure something at the end of this post. 10. I think if you shop around one drive should be cheaper, but you don't want to get one big drive and run everything off of that. forget raid, instead get a 150GB Raptor which has a 10,000rpm for your OS drive then get a second slower drive for everything else, eg., 500GB 7200rpm. this way things are easily managed and if your OS drive goes bad you won't lose your files on the second drive. It also makes defrag and backup and all around maintaining much easier. 11. look for gray to gray frames per second, resolution, manufacturer, color depth, color count, contrast ratio. I'm a bit over your budget $3083 but its a kick butt system and you can upgrade it next even to be even a bigger monster with a simple processor upgrade. so have a look and see what you think all the none needed stuff is out. I would recommend raising the warranty to 4 years |

wow i would love that system but unfortunately i need a monitor too... plus keyboard and speakers, shipping and tax AHHHH!!! but i do like your hard drive idea except i have 1 question about it:
would you only put your OS on the 150gb or all programs just no files?

basically, OS, programs, and such, files and everything else independent of the os would go on the second HDD.
for example all your music and dvd files need to be on that second HDD, otherwise if you have one HDD and it goes bad you lose everything. your biggest cost in that system is your video card, other then the cpu |

ya I run 74GB Raptor just fine, but then you will need to install your games on the second HDD, cause they are getting pretty big these day.
I kept the same configuration, but droped down to stage 3 fan cooling and the case down to 850si and the price came down to 2734. the only thing I don't like is that if you don't get liquid cooling now, to upgrade that later you will have to send it in. Edited by DST4ME - 02 Sep 2008 at 5:15pm |

hmmm the liquid cooling is alot though but is it worth it in the OC capabilities? Because i really dont think i am competent enough to OC by myself, i just want to see how far DS can get it and i heard liquid cooling helps them get it further.
The problem is i will most likely get all kinds of crap with it like a keyboard, speakers, antivirus, and home and student thingy. Personally i dont want any of this but it is necessary and when i added the cheapest ones of those with the 22 inch monitor now im looking at $3000+. I need more friggin money!!

I'm sorry I forgot to mention, in order to get the 2700 price I had to drop the ram to 2GB also.
but again in a few month you can spend a 100$ and upgrade to 4GB |

I really don't agree with 74GB 10K RPM HD. You are paying $200 for 150GB but for half the capicity 74G you are paying $170 that's not smart IMO. if you are spending that much on a HD might as well spend the extra $30 to get 2x the storage. I am thinking of getting the 300GB VR but I have a larger budget ($3K).
I'd forget the 10K rpm drive since you are short on money (IMO)
Also, I don't understand why people say NVIDIA is best when as far as I can tell the new ATI cards have similar performance at better price.
I'm just a noob but I don't see the nvidia as being any better. Edited by rai-zero - 02 Sep 2008 at 6:04pm |

will i take a huge performance hit from dropping to 2gb? i would prefer the 4g very much so what i did on that config is dropped the case to the antec 900 (i hope that doesnt ruin anything) and got about 200 off. air flow doesnt matte so much when ur liquid cooled right??

Protection: McAfee Internet Security (Includes: AntiVirus, FireWall and AntiSpyware)
Office: Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student (Word Excel PowerPoint OneNote) LCD Display: Acer 22 inch (Widescreen) (Black) (High-Performance Gaming Display) Surge Shield: APC SurgeArrest Personal PER7 (7 Outlet) 120V Surge Protector Speakers: Logitech 2 Piece (Black Edition) Amplified Speaker Set Keyboard: Microsoft Multimedia Desktop 2.0 (Multimedia Keyboard + Optical Wheel Mouse) I would shop for all of those seperatly, I think you may find a better price. I would highly recommend 4GB personally I always recommend what I would do, so what I recommend to people is exactly what I would do myself if I was in their shoes. you are very welcome.
