For 9 years I have had nothing but a desktop to game on. I am all too familiar with how far you can push a desktop when overclocking, whether it be the CPU, GPU, or Memory. I just ordered my laptop last week and I am just waiting patiently for the system to get here. It is a preconfigured system only to find out it comes from Asus. My only question is how far can you push a laptop with overclocking of any piece of the hardware since there is a limited amount of power that the system can use? Is there anyone that has a successful OC with greater system performance?
The system I had to purchase was the A17V2 which the link to the laptop is here: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/laptoploadsaved.asp?id=262537

well in general you can't push laptops due to heat, they hot very fast and if you OC them they will be working warm as it is, then you try and put it under load and it will overheat, if you are looking push hardware then laptop is not the way to go IMHO.

I have 4 different laptop coolers here and they can't even handle my folding, I'm around 90c all the time in cpu temp.

Ouch, sounds harsh. Then what kind of performance enhancements will DS do before the system is shipped out? It didn't sound like they do much with preconfigured systems since James told me that they basically get the systems in and ship them out the next day, so that means no 72-hour stress testing? |

Well the config page says 72 hour testing but if james says they get it in and ship the next day, then that contradicts.

Yeah that kinda sent me a weird message. I was also looking at the laptop that the DS one is based off of, and on the Asus website it says it comes with 6GB of DDR2 memory, but on the DS website it says DDR3. Can anyone else verify that it comes with DDR3 and not DDR2? I would imagine it comes with the default DDR2 since it is a preconfigured system.

Ya they really need to update the laptop configurator. At least they took off the bad typo of having a 5000 GB hard drive available on a laptop

Hmmm, starting to think I should cancel my order, first I couldn'y have the laptop I ordered since they didn't carry it anymore and the website didn't reflect that, and now I am only getting DDR2 instead of DDR3, so what is the point of a Quad Core processor with the DDR2 bottleneck?

you ram will make a minuscule difference in games, specially above 1200 x 1000, as long as you got a good CPU and a good GPU, you will have a good gaming experience.

I'm not complaining about the DDR2, it's just I feel like I am being lied to when the site says DDR3 nd the system comes with DDR2, feeling a little cheated, oh well I guess right?

Like I said, lets hold off and see what they have to say, I'm sure Alex will respond to this on monday and then we will see, maybe it is ddr3 and I was wrong.

MaceGoth,
I am sincerely sorry for the misunderstandings. The laptop in deed does come with DDR2 memory. It was mis-understood because usually when you see a 6GB configuration, it's most likely a triple-channel setup which is obviously DDR3... If we knew the laptops came with DDR2, but we said DDR3, then it would be us lying, however, it was a mistake.
We are working on re-vamping the line-up of laptops and ensuring they are completely accurate soon. Some of it has to deal with Asus and the inaccurate information they have provided us.
Anyways, you are our customer, and we value each and every one. We will be more than happy to accommodate to your needs to provide you the best laptop possible. In the end, your happiness is obviously one of the most important goals here at Digital Storm.
There is a delay on the Asus 17" and we will be reflecting on that on our website very soon. But, in the mean time, we are more than happy to offer you a discounted price on the higher-end S17 model which does feature DDR3 memory and a faster video card. Please give us a call on Monday or send us a message using our system and we will take care of you.

Well I have been calling for the past 30 minutes and can't get anyone to answer the phone. I would love to get into the S17 but my budget is less than $2,500. If you can get me into the S17 for under $2,500, then please let me know. I can't wait around for the laptop to come since I really need it for school, and it is a pain in the butt to go to the library for every assignment. If you could personally give me a call at 616-389-3219 that would be great. Thanks!

@MaceGoth,
Did you leave a voicemail? Or send us a message with our message system?
I will pass the message over to have someone call you. Monday's in general are very busy here, but, you will receive a call back soon enough.

Sweet! It has even a faster and better video card than the Asus upgrade we offered, and it is an i7 laptop. Congrats!

Actually your FSB is the bottleneck rather than the RAM, regardless of DDR2 or DDR3. FSB = 1333, RAM = DDR3 1333, FSB is the bottleneck. FSB = 1333, RAM = DDR2 800, FSB is the bottleneck. If you want me to elaborate more let me know. |

Pairing old technology with new causes bottlenecks also. Even though DDR2 isn't technically that old, it would still create problems with a Quad-Core processor.
