Topic: MS Office 2007 & Win 7 64 BitPosted: 25 Aug 2010 at 9:25am |

The system I have ordered will have Win 7 64 Bit, typically I use MS Office 2007 for E-mail, Word, Excel. I do not have OEM discs so I have no idea if Office 2007 is 32 bit or 64 bit compatable.
Any suggestions as to how to determine if this software will work correctly on a 64 bit system, I have not worked with one previously.
Thanks all

Windows 64-bit runs 32-bit software fine as well.
And to answer a likely future question, once you get your PC you'll notice Windows 64-bit has both a Program Files folder, which is for 64-bit apps, and a Program Files (x86) folder, which is for 32-bit apps. Any time you install software it will automatically detect if it is a 32-bit or 64-bit app and point the installer at the appropriate folder. Though I think this is just for a user's convenience in identifying 64-bit apps, because if you manually redirect and install a 32-bit app in the 64-bit Program Files folder it still runs just fine. You'll notice pretty quick there is unfortunately a pretty big lack of actual 64-bit apps, my 64-bit Program Files folder is pretty barren compared to my 32-bit one. |

You know, I've never actually used it so excuse me if this is now grossly inaccurate information, but with Outlook don't you get emails sent directly to your PC?
With so many malware and virus ridden junk emails these days why on god's green earth would you want to do that when you could just use a free email service like Gmail for a buffer instead? What does Outlook offer that a Gmail account doesn't? |

Well I use the calendar function for personal items, I sync it with my Blackberry / work calendar and work e-mail so I am always on top of everything from home or work.
I value the opinions but in this case it makes more sense for me to use this or something like it.
Thanks guys

Hi Warpig,
Outlook will work with Win 7. Mozilla Thunderbird is another that you can use. I use both. Windows 7 also comes with an Email client but I don't care for it. Frank |

Backup everything then try re-installing windows.
Then proceed to see if it works after re-installing. |

I wanted so badly to be able to use the full Office Suite that I have including Outlook....but in the end it was just too hazardous and I gave it up....I still have the full office suite, but outlook is no longer in use. Gmail though it isnt as nice and feature rich like Outlook and Contact manager, it is far safer and reliable.

Hi Warpig,
I have used Outlook every since it was available with Office. I have never had a problem with corrupt Emails of any kind. As stated in another post about not using an anti-virus program, use common sense on your Emails. Don't open any that you don't recognize. Don't click on any links in Emails or open pictures from an unknown source. The ISP has anti-virus programs that preview Emails and you can use your anti to scan them also. My wife uses Outlook on my computer and has had no problems. I use Thunderbird and like it better than Outlook. It looks and feels like Outlook and you can option it to look just like Outlook. I suggest you download Thunderbird and give it a try. It is weird to set up but it gets better with each upgrade. My neighbor liked Outlook but with a new computer she didn't have it anymore. I loaded Thunderbird for her and she is a happy camper now. Frank |
