Does anyone know if MS Office Basic 2003 will work in Windows 7?

Can't speak as to MSOB2003.
 
You might, however, check out Open Office. It's an open source office productivity suite, and free.
 
It's pretty nice, comprehensive, and able to handle most if not all of the industry standard file formats, spreadsheets, et al. You should be able to migrate any files you have to it.
 
Myself, I only use it's word processor, tbh, so it may or may not fit your needs.

Thanks, Psimon!  I've heard of Open Office but I'll check it out.  I'm actually more concerned with the spreadsheet functionality more than the word processor because my wife must be able to open & work with MS Excel spreadsheets because that is the software that her co-workers use. 
 
I've been searching around the Internet & it looks like MSOB 2003 might work with Windows 7.  I guess I won't know for sure until I get the new DS rig & try it out.
