I was looking for a new AV. i've had bad experiences with norton but i hear they completely re did everything from top to bottom and got good reviews.

I used AVG for a long time. was free and took up little space but i dont see it mentioned a lot.

I hear McAfee also went through with a complete renovation and got good ratings.

ESET is what seems to be suggested the most but i have absolutely no exp with it.

The new microsoft essentials was also said to be pretty good compared to their last AV as Windows 7 was to Vista.

What do you guys use?

honestly i dont use anything but vista defender, but i also purposely use chrome on iffy sites and keep fresh copies of anything i use handy ( i also reformat a lot )

i do regularly scan with spybot and ccleaner (very good)

i have also used avg and reccomend it (havent seen it since the change) i used to reccomend it the most

i get flamed for this a lot but honestly, most of the crap you get is from making silly mistakes like clicking on something you shouldnt or installing software that you do not own
if you get a virus from something that isnt one of those 2 options, more than likely it would have gotten around most anything anyway. if someone wants to get in to your personal home computer bad enough, they will

I have used ESET for years and I do software testing, its the best IMO, light, fast, least amount of false positives during my use and testing.

I had this whole 2 page write up with fold outs and video on this topic but it comes to this:

Just use the suggested software from DST4ME.  I spent about 6-8 weeks researching security software as I was ordering my PC, and really, all that data just lead me to ESET and Webroot's spysweeper.

ESET Security package is ridiculously light, strong, and fast.  I can easily do a Full scan (about 150 gigs of data/files) in 18-20 mins, and still full use my pc while gaming, surfing, whatever.  I don't even notice the program running until its done.  Same goes with spysweeper.  They both are very alert and easy to use when detecting weird sites, customizing scans/rules, setting sweep/scan schedules, etc etc.  The price is well marked for what you get, and better if you buy multi year set ups.

One could argue webroot vs malware bytes for your anti spyware needs, but I doubt you could go wrong with either.

As far as the PC I am using goes, its the base i7 920, 6 gigs of ram, 5850 vid card and 750-1000 watt psu type system most (if not all) are buying here from DS.  So its not like I am using some crazy rig set up.

To sum up:

Just get ESET Security Suite, and webroot spysweeper or maybe malware bytes for the spyware stuff, and you are golden.

If money is an issue, I would probably suggest Comodo security suite.  Its very strong, but is pretty heavy on the resources when scanning and monitoring.  They update it alot (definitions and stuff) and its not bad to configure.  ESET is still way easier (I mean you just load teh software and walk away...its that freaking easy) but it will cover you well.

Good luck.

It seems that ESET is what you guys recommended for the rigs built @ DSO for max protection, which one are you talking about?

The first one is three licenses if you want it for multiple comps.
DST4ME recommends downloading it from their site, I believe, for better support.
I don't debate the Big Guy, but, like justin, I use MS Essentials. For the same reason, lol. (It's a free download from MS.)

I'd recommend kaspersky over Eset, I just got a virus using Eset.. It was that fake av protection virus software that pops up so ya... Eset's firewall must blow..

i dont know what the hell you guys are into that youre getting viruses / malware all the time
i have a friend that has been using the interwebs for about 11 years, same amout of time as me, as it were. the only time this friend of mine ever got any malware worth extra attention or reformatting was when he was doing things that he should not have been doing. since he stopped, this really has not happened at all... all he uses is windows built in, with occasional manual sweeps of the processes and directorys
maybe hes just lucky? but id stil be interested to know what youre up to when you get these malware attacks

Keeping in mind that I know little to nothing about these SW packages, but do you need both?  ESET's Security Suite doesn't also perform the same functions as Webroots product(s)?  Sorry in advance for the ignorance, but a quick explanation is appreciated!

P.S.  Note:  To date, have used Symantec products, at home and work.
