i'm new here. i just want some input/advice on this config i have set up. it's currently 8.5k, which is over my budget. any advice on how i can slim it down to 7.5-8 without cutting any major performance components? and are there any compatibility issues with this setup?

I don't know if you are just putting the most expensive thing together or you actually know what you want but...

raid 1 SSD is a waste. go with raid 0 or leave them independent or if you know what you want, just ignore this.

You can't have SLI on the Asus Rampage Formula. You need a 780i or 790i for SLI.

@xpubux: yes, i'm planning on overclocking it quite a bit. hence the asus rf mobo. you're right about the paint. but i need good drives. i think i'll drop the third drive and have 2 drives.

@skyr: thanks for the input about the board. why can't raid 1 work with ssd's?

edit: wait a minute...dst, are you so sure about that DDR3? i'm thinking it might cost less to go with a 780 and have DDR2. would that be a more efficient option? second edit: nevermind.
revised config. this is more within my price range, although i'd still like to slim down a bit. thanks for your input!

erm, i'm eyeing that 1k W carton and the triple SLI. i don't know if it'll work. i know the triple SLI will probably take 6 or 700W max, but i'm not positive about the CPU. will it work?

RAID 1 does work with SSDs. But I don't know what you intend to use this computer for so I just assume for gaming because you didn't mention anything important. It's why I said it's a waste as RAID 1 is intended for server / professional use.

RAID 1 mirrors the drives in real time so if one fails, it switches to another one without interrupting you. It can also boost read performance but that depends on raid controller. And in case you were intending to use RAID 1 for data backup, well it's not meant for data back-up.

RAID 0 is for speed but it doesn't protect you against drive failure. If one drive fails, you lose all your data.

Here is a link to NVidia's site that lists PSUs that are certified to work with various SLI configuraitons.

All the Triple 280GTX certified PSUs are 1200w.

The HX1000 might work, but would run hot and not have much headroom, especially if you OC everything. I would go with the PC Power & Cooling 1200w.

thank you for your input about cooling, tom. i'll take that into consideration. 1200 it is.

@dst: i intend to do quite a bit of experimentation with overclocking. and besides, i have the budget for 3. cooling added itself after that.

@skyr: i know about the configurations. i'm just not completely sure which one works best for my purposes yet. i'm thinking about it. haven't come to a conclusion yet. edit: and my purposes would be mostly gaming, and a steadily growing amount of programming and animating on the side. nothing too out of the ordinary.

overkill if you ask me, you would be better off going with 2 gpus, the 1000w psu and liquid cool only the cpu, 2 gpus can handle what ever you throw at them with out oc

but ofcourse its upto you

way overkill. i wish i had money to splurge out 8 grand on a computer  Ermm
either way...

-you say you want good harddrives ? well the Velociraptor is a GOOD HDD.
-3 video cards is complete overkill. Get 2, you will be more then happy
-if you plan to spend so much money , why not wait for i7 , i wish that i had , but i didnt so dont make the same mistake that a couple of us here did.
-Overclocking yourself may void your warrenty so watch out for that
-Your spending all that money and using onboard sound ? may i suggest the razer or the asus? both good sound cards if you ask me

everything else i would suggest has already been mentioned by either Tom, DST , Sky or xpub. so its all up to you now. what you have configured is way overkill, and if you cut it down , you could use that extra money for a real nice monitor or some other extra peripherals. like a cool glowing razer mouse !! lol

@xpubux: isn't it necessary to have stage-three cooling for triple SLI?

@spectra: as i see it, velociraptor is good, but SSD's are better. isn't that true? or are you suggesting that buying velociraptor would be a slight performance decrease for a major money decrease? i think i see the logic behind that, although i'm still uneasy about it. i'm starting to agree about the triple GPU, it does seem a bit much. when is i7 going to come out (i'm too lazy to check)? yes, i know about the overclocking. i'm fine with it though. i'm using onboard sound because i have 7-year-old speakers, and using a sound card won't do anything for them. i'm not planning on replacing my speakers; if it weren't for my mother's insistence, i would still be on a CRT as well. so that's why i'm not getting a sound card.

i previously had a stock computer with a 6800 card. so i don't know how the 280 is going to work. so if i could just see a 280 in action, i think that would help me quite a bit. i'm going to look around a bit and see if i can set that up.

ill tell you right now. since i have 2 gtx 280's in my rig. its INSANE! simple as that . it destroys any game you throw at it . look at my benchmark score . not only that but im getting 40 plus FPS on crysis 1920x1200 on very high settings. is that not enough for you ? lol 2 gpu's is the way to go man .

as for the velociraptors, there really really fast man , i dont think you will be dissapointed. but its up to you .

alright, so i've got the whole rig down except for the hard drives. i could get two 300GB Velociraptors, as shown in the config below. but i think that maybe having a SSD as my main drive and a 1TB drive as my secondary would allow for higher performance. you know, the SSD would allow higher speeds and the 1TB drive would allow more storage. my question is, how much faster is an SSD than a 300GB Velociraptor? and which hard drive config would y'all suggest that i go with?

here's the more or less final config:

sorry, i don't know where else to post this, so i'll just post it here.

my old desktop had a CRT monitor with a square screen. my laptop is longer than it is tall. it distorts images; people and objects are clearly and noticeably fatter (wider) on my laptop than they were on the CRT. my question is, if i get a 20-inch widescreen display for my new computer, will there be this same distortion? or should i just do anything possible to get a square monitor?

in an unrelated sidenote, i am almost ready to order my rig. down to about 2 weeks remaining before order.

check format and resolution of your laptop settings, I have a wide screen laptop and desktop monitor and TV. its all in the settings and what your graphic card can handle.

with the new GPUs you have no problems and widescreen is highly recommended

your laptop might not have 1:1 pixel mapping or you don't have it enabled. Most monitors have standard 1:1 pixel mapping.

alright, so i'm almost ready to order the computer. thinking of ordering it in two weeks. two questions. i'm going on vacation for 2 weeks over Christmas. could i make my order just before i leave, and request DS to not ship my system till at least the day i get back?

i'm ordering the HAF case, which has two large 250mm fans and some other fans. if i order LED fans, will DS give the 250mm fans LED's as well?

no the led fans are 120mm fans and 3 or 4 of them will replace your 250mm fans.

I'm sure you can make the shipping request, that should not be a problem.
