I'm looking at this setup right now:

Ticket Number: 188331

Total Price with Instant Savings: $2,299.00

Direct Load URL: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=188331

How much of a difference would the 790i MB be over the 750?  Is there going to be a huge differnce between these two motherboards?  Also, I'm looking at two 500gb hard drives.  I want to use one of the drives as normal, the other more for storage for MP3's and files.  I'm not sure what all the raid setups or stripes mean?

Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

On the HDs and RAID.  RAID-0 is where the two drives will each have half the data written to each drive.  You would end up with one logical drive of 1 TB.  Write speeds are faster because it is writting 1/2 the files to each drive.  The draw back to this form of RAID is that if one drive fails you loose everything on both drives.

RAID-1 is where the two drives are mirrored, i.e. a copy of each file is placed on both drives, so you end up with one logical drive of 500 GB, write speeds are the same as writting to a single drive.  The advantage to this is that if one drive fails you still have all of your files on the other drive, you loose nothing.

If you have the need for RAID-1 it may be best to have one smaller drive for your OS and program installs and then the two 500 GB drives in a RAID-1 for your important pictures/videos/documents that you do not want to loose.

You will see from my configuration that I have 3 500GB drives, One for the OS/Program files and two in a RAID-1 for my important files.  (I also have a couple of external drived for doing a weekly backup.  (I originally had two 500 GB drives in a RAID-0 and one failed - I was fortunate in that a restoration company was able to get my videos, pictures, and emails off of the failed drives.)  For the cost of an extra drive (~$100) I could have saved myself a lot of aggrivation and money.

On the motherboards:

750i supports up to 1333 FSB, 8 USB ports, 4 x SATA, 4 x PATA drives, and Dual SLI.  http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_750i_sli.html

780i supports up to 1333 FSB,  10 USB ports 6 x SATA, 2 x PATA, and Tri-SLI.  http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_780i_sli.html

790i supports up to 1600 FSB, DDR3 RAM, 10 USB ports, 6 x SATA, 2 x PATA, and Quad SLI with 2 Dual-SLI Cards.  http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_790i_sli.html
