To the Readers: I am only moderately computer savvy. that is what happens when you rely on the IT peoople at work. I have run a number of tickets for various configurations, I have followed the chat rooms here for a couple of days, and I have concluded that I could use the experience of others in configuring my new computer. My givens and druthers are: Budget up to about $5,000 dollars or so but I may not need to go that rich based upon my needs. I would like a system that is expandable and have the potential to handle the applications and games that will be developed in the foreseeable future. I retire in about a year so I will have time to fill. The uses for the computer are: Office work so I need Windows 7 Ultimate 64 and Windows Office 2007 Professional. I do a little video editing from my Sony HD camera on Adobe Premier Elements and I do the same with my still camera work on Photoshop Elements, but I am not a serious editor. I just do enough to provide some continuity from the rough footage and clean up and print my stills. I enjoy the gaming and that is why I am here and in that regard being a former Navy Pilot, I have the Microsoft library of flight sims and also some of the other combat simulations. I have the Thrustmaster F-15 throttle and stick. I enjoy shooter games and would like to try some multi-player games. I have a Samsung 23 inch monitor with 2048 x 1152 res. My house is wired with cat 5 in almost every room and I might want to link my TVs so I can play a game on my 52 inch HD primary TV or download a movie and play iit on one or more of the TV's in the house. I have a DLink router and DSL. At some point in time I might want to add a second monitor and/or upgrade the resolution and screen size. I would like a TV/Tuner. My most recent ticket was 352416 at $4180 but as I think about it I might want to go to the 975 chipset rather than the 960 (maybe that is overkill) and add a sound card. I look forward to your comments. |

I got a bunch of problems/questions.
first of all in your config you have HDD1 set to raid but you have picked only one veloci, you pick 2 x veloci, this will jack up the price even more. there is a whole bunch of other stuff but I will just take them out and do it how its suppose to be. I don't think your 23" has a res of 2048 x 1152, that kind of res is for 30" monitor. the hailstorm is more for people that have LC on cpu and gpu and when I say LC I mean frostbie and not asetek. you have no way of writing cd/dvd, all you have is a bluray that can play but it can't write. Thanks for your insights. Much appreciated. The optical drive selectino was hitting the wrong button. You are correct on the monitor I have the T24 and its resolution is 1920 x 1200. I will review your suggestions and make my decision.

DST4ME:
If I were to insist that I had to have the Intel 960 or 975 cpu and the 2x ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB video card, how would you configure the rest of the system?
Thanks

big mistake. there is no reason to at all, not even one.
the only reason I got a 975 was because I wanted to push my oc and play with it myself. but if you were to go ahead and make that change, you just change the cpu and add the second card, nothing else needs to be changed/adjusted. Edited by DST4ME - 11 Nov 2009 at 7:33pm |
