    Posted: 15 Apr 2009 at 11:08am
So I have been wanting to build a powerhouse of a computer and I am limited to what I know about certain things but know a decent amount of basics about specs.  Alienware screwed me over Tongue Sleepy and I always held them in high regard until I dealt with their customer support team.  I am really considering buying from here because so far I am loving what I am seeing. But anyways if I do buy from here, this is what I was planning for a spec and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about it.

HAF 932 Chassis

Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 965 3.2 GHz

ASUS Rampage II Extreme Motherboard

12GB DDR3 1600MHz Mushkin Ram

1200 Watt PC Power & Cooling

300GB Western Digital Velociraptor

160GB Western Digital Raptor

2x SLI Quad NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 1.792GB

H2O: Stage 3: Specialized Frostbite Dual Loop System for CPU & Two GTX 295 Video Cards

Creative Labs X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion

DVD+R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD Writer 48x) (Lightscribe Edition)

DVD+R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD Writer 48x)

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit

With Entire Twisterboost Setup

Like I said, I am new to the dual graphics cards setups as well as the Liquid cooling and dont know what kind of hassle they are. I have owned several gaming computers in the past but none to this degree and I was wanting one that would last me longer than the other ones did so I was checking out several companies that looked like I could trust them with an order like this and settled with you guys here at DS bcz you looked like the only ones reliable enough to get the job done right and be there if there are any problems at all.

Please feel free to give me recommendations on my specs that I chose if you know something would work better with this setup.

P.S. Im running on a new Logitec 23' Widescreen with 2ms response time and 50000:1 contrast ratio but resolution is 1900 to 1080.    just making sure this is a decent monitor to run with a computer speced like this.

First off, you dont need a GPU LC system.  its a waste and if something goes wrong during shipping you lose your PC for 2 weeks minimum.

What will you be using this machine for? If just gaming, you only need 6GB ram and you should go the muskin 1333.

Next if you've got the money to blow on a dual loop system, get a 500GB regular drive and wait for the Vertex II from OCZ.  It will have read and write speeds far beyond what SATA 2 can handle. i believe it was 480MB/s write and 500MB/s read.  Im not sure if you really need the 1200w PSU.

Here is what i got for you. DST will see this and make further changes.

It comes up to $4861 after the discount.

Gaming is what I intended on using this machine for and thank you very much for the feedback. Could you possibly tell me the difference between the 6GB of 1333 MHz Ram and the 12 GB of 1600 MHz Ram. Im not trying to insult you or anything lol I just dont know myself and would like to be explained to the difference.

For any game you wont need more then 6GB.  and the speed is no longer a factor. all you will get is maybe 1-2 FPS more with the 1600 over the 1333. Not only that the timings are faster on the 1333 anyways.

you have many colors of fluid to choose from for your LC so pick one that fits you. if you do the non UV you can change the lighting accordingly.

Still wait on DST4ME.  he is the one i listen to... *whispers* Master, where are you?

Bigan do have a ticket number for that config you listed? why are you getting 2 x 295? are you sure you need 2 of them? a single 295 will handle your resolution just fine, and if you feel like you need another later you can always upgrade to that later.

let me know your ticket number, budget and why you need 2 x 295, once I have this info I can config a system for you Alienware is no where near as powerful as a high-end DS system, is not as degradable or customizable, so Alienware is basically an inferior system to begin with.

my ticket number is 270553 bro but like I said this is a rough draft of choosing a build that I want and my budget I would like to keep right at or below 7000. I chose dual graphics because Ive heared alot of hype about it boosting your frame rates and wanted to see for myself what it would do. I am gaming on a 1900 x 1080 resolution if that helps ya out and thank you so much for your time lol this site rocks and you are completely correct about Alienware.

Still knowing the game itself helps.  If you are like me and play WoW, a single 295 is actually overkill.  only game that really would warrant 2 of them is Crysis and even that seems a little overpowered.

I play WoW most of the time but when I do play other games I play alot of First Person Shooters such as Bioshock and I plan on playing Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 when they are released. I guess you could say I wanted to make sure I was ready for when the games that push higher numbers does come out.

For now then, my suggestion is go with only 1 295 and then if needed upgrade.  right now a 295 can handle anything you throw at it.

I'm fairly sure that a 1000w can handle a quad setup so thats up to you.

Also on your ticket i noticed that you have everything for an OC.  you only need the CPU. everything else is wasted money.

LOL that is great but remember none of us work for DS, we are all customers, who found DS to be such a great company and product that we stay around to help and spread the word, its very hard to find a great company, and I mean a great company

I gave you a 500GB HDD cause there are super fast SSDs coming out later this year so you might as well get one of those when they come out

I was most concerned with if a 1000 watt power supply will be sufficient or will I need a 1200 watt power supply. and I will prolly get one of the SSD drives coming out but would like a raptor to have with the 500 GB drive for in the mean time.

drop veloci its a $300 waste once you get the ssd.

drop the fan control its pointless realy.

drop mcafee its worthless, go with nod32/eset smart security

double check with DS the 1200w might be a better option

Ok so I have one more configuration lol I think I got it right this time. The only reason I still chose the veloci hard drive is bcz I was worried that I would not be able to install the SSD myself bcz I have never added parts to a computer.. hopefully I can get it myself lol. Thanks for your time again just posting this to double check the order of any flaws.

OK well listen there are something so easy a 12 year old could do it, and when I say easy I mean easy for a first timer. if you can connect your monitor to your PC then a HDD is easier.

all you do is take the power and data cable from the back of the 500GB drive and connect it to the back of the SSD. thats it.

as for moving windows and etc from the 500GB to your new SSD, you just follow my clone guide which is very easy:

you can follow my clone guide here

you should have some extra cables in case, so when you order ask DS to make sure they include one extra SATA and power cable for a SATA drive, which they should do for you for free.

so I like this new build you made and I have nothing to change, only question is, do you really need that bluray drive?

I dont need it just thought it would be cool.. also thought that maybe games would one way be on blue-rays and wanted to be ready but I guess its more logical to say that when that time comes, blue-rays will be cheaper and more powerful.
