MAN!!! That's such a *HUGE* case for such a tiny motherboard. Compensating for something? hehehehehehe

Harleyman, I would suggest a 120mm CPU cooler. Get a Xigmatek HDT 1283, lap the surface of the contact patch, and use the optional bolt down kit and you'd be looking at temperatures rivaling many liquid cooling kits(seriously). Just make sure your case is wide enough (about 9 in)
Also- before you get too far along in the build, if you did not remove all motherboard heatsinks, and replace the crap factory thermal interface material they use with something decent like MX-2 ceramique, now is the time to do that. You will thank me when you get to the overclocking.
Bah. I'm too late. Edited by Tyler Lowe - 16 Sep 2008 at 12:44pm |

It's not a "bad" heatsink, but it is a 92mm design mounted with pushpins. DSO uses them because they're easy to install, relatively effective for the price and ship well due to their low weight. It performs well considering, but the design has limitations. There are definitely better heatsinks availble if you don't have to worry about shipping a system cross country. Some test results . There's nothing wrong with the direction you took, but if/when you do look at cooling upgrade, consider a high performance air cooler while you're looking over the water kits.
I'm very happy to see you're getting the performance you wanted at last. I wonder if the affinity settings you were using with the quad core rigs had anything to do with your stability issues.

You finally got it to work, huh? Darn. And here I thought *all* computers didn't like you.
So... what did you promise it? A dusting every weekend? A primo silkscreening on the outside?

Looking good H-Man!
btw I'm averaging 60-70fps in FS9 and around 40-50 FSX (over airport addons and Manhattan scenery). Let's take this discussion over to the sim forum...I'll put up some screens later! Edited by Costone - 16 Sep 2008 at 1:04pm |

I've had mine for a while... the battery ran out a LONG time ago. I guess their batteries aren't all they're cracked up to be all the time.

Not trying to poke an open wound brother, I just find it odd that you're running so well with a C2D after so many issues with a C2Q. Good luck with the rest of the build. I hope you hit your goals with that OC.

I believe the E86 has a x10 multiplyer vs the E85s 9.5. Running at the stock 333 FSB. You can easily get the FSB set to 400 using even auto settings unless you have a bad chip. That would get you an even 4.00 Ghz.
Though i suppose if you wanna start with 3.6 you can do that too...thats only a 360 FSB. But im saying you can easily get it to 400 using auto settings. |

Very nice HM! I'm glad to see things are working out. I knew you just couldnt leave the computer scene =). I wish I had the time/money to tinker with and build my own computer.
If I had someone to turn to when I screwed up I would do it. But I can just hear the wife yelling at me now, "You wasted all that money on these parts and you can't even put it together"

Congratulations Mason! You finally get to do your flying! That's a good thing! I hope your rig keeps on running well for you!
I'm with sneakers... I might try to build my own if I knew someone who could undo my mistakes.. LOL! The mom has this habit of seeing me all frustrated and messing up and then taking over and making things worse... |

A little odd, yes. I don't really have any experience at all with FSX, but I thought I remembered you saying something about wanting the clocks on your system to get at least 3.6 GHz in order to run the game smoothly. There was also a thread were you were talking about how the quad distributed the load for air traffic and weather between the cores and that was one of the things that made for a good experience with the game. So I was a little bit surprised to see that not only had you gone with a dual core, and that you were having such good luck with it. If 3.3 GHz is enough to push the game smoothly with a CD2, maybe I'll give it a shot and pick up a copy of it myself.

Well, you know the rule of hardware don't you?
The moment you create a bigger system, someone will figure a way to build software to use it all up.
Of course, that leads to one of the major rules of software:
The moment you build software to use up a system, someone will come up with a bigger system to put it on.
Ain't it funny how these two wind up being cyclic?
Trust me HM... You *will* be putting more money into it... eveutally.

Just *one* monitor? One two or three? Heck... if I had my way, I'd get one of those 6-way monitor consoles. That way, I can read my Internet News, check my Email, play my games on a couple of them... maybe still have some left over for some picture viewing.

Why do people like multi monitors? Im always bugged by them, id rather have one large 28''+ vs 2 22s or something along those lines.

Ah that makes sense then. I dont really play any games where having a second monitor would do much help other then maybe displaying a mini map...
