First, quick question. How exactly does RAID 5 work? I know that with RAID 1, you can theoretically rip out one of the 2 drives when the computer is off and that drive will be bootable from, since it's a mirror image of the first drive. Is this possible with RAID 5?

When I get the time, I want to do a RAID 5 setup with three 2.5" drives. Why 2.5" drives? If the time comes that I so need to go mobile, I can rip out one of the 2.5" drives and pop it right into my laptop, of which I'll have all the drivers for installed on the drive, of course.

Right now, I'm planning on the following:

3x WD Scorpio Black 160GB @7200rpm
RAID Controller = Rosewill RC-217

Any suggestions?

the other drive will not be bootable, you need to put back to raid with a second drive, a raid setup, will only boot in raid.

keep in mind if the raid itself fails, you lose data no matter what.

raid 5 can handle one drive failure but with 2 drives it will not function till you rebuild the drives.

you do understand that raid does not improve seektime and it only helps with large files and it does not help with small files.

you would be better off with a fast ssd.

RAID doesn't improve seektime? Hmm, that's something good to know then. SSDs would be nice, but are there any good non-expensive ones around 300GB? Heh, I'm a bit cash strapped at the moment and I need a good 300GB laptop drive for the future.

Wait, to clarify, are RAID 1 mirror disks bootable? Or is it only bootable in RAID?

Mmk. My current goal now is to get a good, affordable RAID 1 setup using 2.5" drives @ 7200 RPM or more, or solid state. I need at least 300 GB of data for future usage. Preferably, I want a drive with a free fall sensor. My budget total is around $400 maximum.

I'm looking at these right now:
2x WD 320 GB Scorpio Black @ 7200 RPM w/Free-Fall Sensor
Rosewill RC-217 RAID Card
Silverstone CFP52B 3.5" to 2.5" Internal Multi-Drive Conversion Box w/Hot-Swap

Reason for 2.5" Drives : I plan on getting a laptop in the future. What I really want to do is to create a RAID system on my computer using 2.5" drives so I can just pop in one of the drives when I go mobile. I'll install all the drivers and stuff on the hard drives as well, so I'm good to go whenever.

Okay..

Um, is there any way possible to have a clone of a hard drive that's updated in real time and bootable? I'm guessing no, right?

imaging does that but I find imaging not a 100% reliable which is why I clone and recommend cloning, but acronis does imaging too. but it will not be bootable as its a backup image.

I'm not aware of a software that backups realtime and is bootable.
