Yep, Nvidia's budget cards are complete garbage. If you want a budget card, go with ATI.
8600 SLI can not outperform a single 8800 GTS. Is it necessary? It depends what you going to be doing. Definitely get the 8800 if you want to game with the PC in 4 years time. If you play games like Bioshock, Battlefield, ... Definitely 8800. If you play games that were released 2+ years ago like Warcraft 3, WoW, CS 1.6 than any GPU would do. |

Oh yeah, it's possible. Just like it's possible that the performance of the 8800 GTX is a third greater than the 8800 GTS.
"Necessary", in this case, is subjective. I'm no expert, but I believe the general consensus is that the 8600 is an entry level DX10 card. On the other hand, look at all the other cards that the 8600 beats. My old machine uses an ATI Radon 9800 PRO. Just 4 years ago or so, this was the 2nd or 3rd fastest card on the planet. Now it doesn't even show up on the scale! Yet, the 9800 will still play games like Oblivion, FEAR, and STALKER, sort of....
The choice between the 8800 cards depends on your wallet and on your display. If you've got the bucks, go with the GTX or the (gasp) Ultra. Life's too short and all that.... If you want to save a couple of hundred bucks and/or you use a relatively low resolution display (<= 1600x1280) you will probably be reasonably happy playing most games on a 8800 GTS. Hopefully you could add a second 8800 GTS in the future to boost graphics performance later, or just bite the bullet and upgrade in a couple of years.
Alex (and other DSO folks), I've read that there can be problems adding a second video card down the road for SLI. Apparently, the two cards have to be dead nuts identical, or there can be problems. Can you shed any light on this? Edited by Bill the Cat - 19 Sep 2007 at 12:11am |

You do not need identical cards for SLI for Nvidia's 8 series.
They can be from different manufacturers (EVGA & XFX) and have different clock speeds (500MHz & 600MHz). The two cards just need to be in the same performance tier (8800 & 8800 will work but 8800 and 8600 will not. Ultra & Ultra will work but Ultra & GTX will not). The slower clocked card must be in the first PCI-E slot or you are going to have issues. |

Holy "smokes"! Are you saying you can combine 8800 GTX and 8800 GTS cards?
Even if they both have to be GTSs, that would be good news.

No, you can't SLI a 8800 GTX and a 8800 GTS. Sorry if I confused you.
The two cards must be from the same performance tier. The numbers have to be the same and the suffix also. You can SLI a 8800 GTS 320MB and a 8800 GTS 640MB but who would do that? =.= Edited by skyR - 18 Sep 2007 at 4:29pm |

You made a very good choice. You're going to be very happy with the performance the GTS320 has to offer.
