    Posted: 05 Jul 2009 at 1:56pm
Hello,

For some reason, my machine has started hiccuping after a while when I am playing games. Sometimes it starts out fine for a good 30 minutes to an hour and then it starts pausing periodically while making a weird buzzing sound (not continuous, just during the hiccup). On occasion, it even just shuts down. I have no idea why this is happening save maybe it is overheating. The problem with that is I have had this machine since September and I am playing the same games (except for one) that I have always been playing with no problems. Could it be that the new game I installed is causing the problem? What should I check? Thanks.

did you install anything before you had this problem?

when you say pausing, what do you mean by that?

The only 2 things I installed, that I can recall, before I started having this problem are "Super" (The video encoding software), and the Champions Online Beta.

When I say pausing, I mean that the screen stops moving completely and you cant interact with the computer at all. During this, the computer is making buzzing sound almost like it would if holding a key down for too long but more like a motorcycle noise.

Thanks for your interest!

well try and uninstall those first and lets see if you still have this problem.

check your temps at the same time with HWMonitor and lets see what your max temps are.

I uninstalled Super and I Looked at HWMonitor. It looks like my GPU gets up to 208 F. The good thing is that I did not experience any of the issues. I have also been clearing out my registry too with the Abexo application. I played City of Heroes for 4 hours last night just to see. So far so good. I want to wait until Wednesday (when I can try the Champions Online Beta again) to see what happens then. Thanks for your help. I will post on Wednesday.

boss 208f is too hot, that can be cause of your problem if not for sure.

your temps on GPU should not go over 85c, if it does and 208f is over 85c then that is too hot.

set your fan for GPU to 100% and keep an eye out for the temps, if we can't manage them then you need to call DS.

FYI:

   85C = 185F
208F = 98C

As promised I am posting again today. THank you again for your interest. My GPU got up to 224F (107C).....and yes it started hiccupping. But this was while playing COH....which was working the other day fine.... Playing Champions Online though caused immediate hiccups and it was at 208F. How do I set my fans to 100%. I have a benchmark crusher laptop. THank you.

That is way too hot, thats not okay at all. Something you can try if you feel comfortable doing so, is to remove the back plate and just use a can of air to spray out the inside, make sure its not dusty or anything.

If you keep having over heating problems, let us know.

I blew the dust out. I think that might have been the problem. I will test further but after playing for an hour, I had temps of 188F to 194F. I will let you know

OK well I did some significant testing these past few days. The good thing is my laptop is not hiccuping anymore after the dust was removed. The bad news is the temp is still getting up to 224F (its also going down to 155F). I am concerned now that my gpu may burn out if those temps keep getting so high.

Give us a call and we will help you out. Odds are it will be coming back for us to take a look at it. Just ask for any of the technicians on hand since I will be leaving shortly for the day to meet with a college counselor.

I don't know if they will ever have me doing that. But since I have dabbled in web development before, as well as site administration, designing, coding, etc I figured it was time I go to school for it and take it seriously. Plus, I have always been fascinated by coding.
