Hey guys just finished putting together my rig on here 416689. Decided to go with Digital Storm since I plan on doing water cooling and I'm fairly new to that scene. The rig is in my budget and I'm looking for something that I won't need to upgrade for a little while but always looking to save some cash on some unneeded things. Was just wondering if it was advised to go with the stage six cooling, I have heard that the dual 470/480 both pump out some crazy heat which is why I decided to include that. Like I said suggestions are welcome other than that looking forward to becoming a proud owner of one of these amazing DS rigs!

Quick edit: I have been reading that the I7 930 is almost identical to the 960 once they are overclocked, how badly would it be a drop if I went from the 975 to  the 930 to try and shave off some of the cost? It appears that the 930 once OC is going to be nearly the same as the 975 unless I have been reading wrong.

Extreme edition processors by Intel have unlocked multipliers, so obviously, overclocking is a lot more flexible and easier with them. The 975 should theoretically overclock better than an i7 920 (Oh, and, any LGA 1336/X58 i7 right now besides the extreme editions are pretty much the same when overclocked, I'm talking i7 920, 930, 960, 940, etc.).

The 930 overclocked will bypass the 975's stock, but that wasn't the purpose of the 975. Overclock a 975 and you should see a bigger overclocking difference.

Since you're in that budget range, why not go with a i7 980X? Around the same budget range, and you'll be more prepared when/if application designers take to multi-threading.

ALL video cards have their stock coolers engineered specifically to tailor to the needs of their target group. GTX 480s are obviously targeted toward the gaming market, and thus, they expect people to run SLI rigs of them. Therefore, the stock coolers on them are perfectly fine, though you wouldn't wanna try overclocking on them. If you really wanna overclock, LC will work, but really, it's not that big of a difference, so we usually say forget video card overclocking.

Onto cases. The Assassin (a.k.a. FT02) rocks, but it's slightly awkward in liquid cooling. Personally, with your build, I would recommend a FrostChill system just for the CPU. The reason why I say this is because it will only use one 120mm radiator, of which you can just mount to the primary exhaust for the CPU. This seems practical because otherwise, the radiator would mount on the bottom two 180mm fans, which are blowing up at the rest of your system. If overclocked enough, I fear that the ambient temperature of the case will rise due to this, and might contribute to heat that your video cards are already spitting out.

470s, I dunno, with what I think you're aiming for, a 480 seems more suitable anyways.

Swapped in a FrostChill system instead, along with a 980X, EVGA X58, and dual GTX 480s. Don't forget a bigger PSU, 1250w seems to be recommended for dual GTX 480s anyways. Unfortunately had to take off Corsair RAM and go with DS's certified RAM. But still, kickass rig.

He's (sorry, assuming you're a "He" here :) ) only overclocking between 3.3 and 3.9 GHz, so like you said, a 930 at 3.9 or a 975 at 3.9 are essentially the same, except the 930 is about 650 dollars less.  There's a good chance the 930 could hit the same speed as the 975 in that 3.3-3.9 range, and a chance it could OC higher overall.

You never know what OC you're going to get, though, so... tough call.

Still, I don't see a reason for the 975, unless he plans to take the OC further by himself, but there's no guarantee that one chip would be better than the other. Even then, I think the wallet would notice the difference more than he ever would.

Also, why spend $1K now for a 6-core when most programs can't even take advantage of it?  In the event that there will be 6-cores for more mainstream users (I don't see why there wouldn't be eventually), I think $300 now and $300 later beats $1k now even with the bragging rights.

Of course, it all comes down to what you want and what you're willing to spend it on.  So if you like ablahblah's suggestions and you have the cash, go for it.  If you'd rather save a few hundred dollars, go for that instead, or invest that money elsewhere.  Either way it'll be a great comp, lol.

This is really just a test and collection type thing at the moment since I am deployed to Afghanistan till November so I don't plan on buying anything till the end of October and was just trying to get a price range for everything I want when I do go to purchase. So I assume there will be some price drop by then on some of the components. As far as having the LC mounted like you suggested would that be the default for what they do at DC or would I have to request them to install it in that configuration.

980X was a suggestion b/c we really dunno when games will start taking advantage of multi-threading, and he's in the market for serious high-end gaming anyways.

The way I put LC mounting, I would assume for FrostChill LC, that would be the most logical way to mount it.

Yes, but how many even remotely stress a 4 core comp?  Just saying, if it's a computer for gaming there isn't much of a point to get the 980X over the 930, not for $700 more.

By the time there's a "need" for a 6-core comp to run a game, we'll be far beyond 6-core processors.  Personally I'd say that advising someone to get the 980X  for "future proofing" is advising them to waste their money  =/

several games now will use 6 threads .
for gaming, no there is not much to gain from a 980x.. I would not have one, except I got mine for a very good price..
