I have been speaking w/ Jason in emails to see if I can get the temps cooler and blah blah. I honestly do not know enough about the OC process so I have been asking around. Mostly on Overclock.net. From what they've been telling me, the voltage is way too high. 1.55V is max recommended from what I gather. And based on the comments from others, isn't 1.5V a bit excessive for 4.2 GHz? Although, the silver lining is DS's stress test. 30-40 C ambient would explain this I think right? But even then, couldn't the BLCK be upped a bit to mitigate the voltage? Educate me pls! PS: I'm happy with the OC, but I felt like the temps and the volt were going to endanger the chip's integrity. PS.S: I have a dual loop Liquid cooled system. Asus Ramp 2 extreme. i7 965. 3x285s. Zalman air fans and blah blah. I am not sure on the specifics of the DS water cooling system though. Jason said another rad would decrease the temps by 10 degrees but not up the OC potential. I wouldn't mind a cooler PC tho. Waiting on Jason to get back to my email :P Edited by LDLD - 02 Apr 2009 at 2:18pm |

Why would they endanger the chip's integrity, if they have to pay to replace it themselves?
each CPU is a bit different, for 4.2, that is the settings that your CPU was stable with, I assume if you call them and ask them to lower the voltage but there is a good possibility that you will have to drop your OC speed. |

No, im not saying they *intend* to endanger the CPU. I'm just asking whether the high volt and temps would do so.
I asked them to keep pushing higher on the OC so they did. My question is more technical. Not abstract. Just trying to understand the OC process in general but specifically voltage in relation to BLCK and blah blah. I'm happy w/ the OC. I just thought the rig was too hot. And after all this time I still don't know why the CPU wasn't able to go higher. It has HT off for it to get to 4.2. Heat was ruled out actually because DS used an industrial fan. They also switched around different CPUs but it still needed HT off to hit 4.2. And based on my exchanges in email w/ DS reps I just never got an answer as to why the rig couldn't go higher. Based on what I'm gathering for myself - the stress test is brutal. And the people on OC.net may not be testing their rigs as hard as DS does. If that's the case then I understand completely. |

How many rads and do you have and what size are they? 51c idle seems a bit warm.. My 965 oc'd to 4.025 sits at about 37-39c idle.. |

I have no idea...
Jason offered an external rad or something for like 250 bucks more. I kept thinking that maybe I accidentally ordered the lesser cooling solution but it's the max possible LC option DS offers. Unless I should have specified wanting more rads or something. I'd definitely want more if it would help lower temps. |

You should call and ask what size rads you have already and there placement.. If you went with the 950si then I have a feeling you have 2 120mm rads. With an oc that high and you lcing your gpus, 2 120mm rads might not be enough for a cpu+3gpu loop.

Did you ask them for specific rads? I see that you have a 950si too.
What would be ideal for my situation to get it as cool as possible? |

I researched liquid cooling in the 950si case pretty extensively before I decided to have my rig built. The first thing I looked at was the size of rads the tj-09/950si can support. Sadly I found that with the stock parts you can only mount rads in sizes of 120mm. Only thru heavy modification can one achieve a double/triple rad at the top.
Since I decided not to lc the gpus I had them install 2 120mm rads on the cpu itself to mimmick that of a dual rad. Since the 950si won't support a dual rad without some customization/special brackets, having 2 single 120mm rads hooked to the cpu was as good as it gets in my situation.
Cooling a cpu oc'd to 4.2 is a somewhat difficult task, mainly because your trying to cool three gpus as well. Which the gpus tend to naturally run quite abit hotter then the cpu.
Most setups ive seen require a triple rad to properly sustain 3 gpus and a cpu.
After my rig was built I started looking for some cool fan grills and my search lead me to a place called performance-pcs.com and I found the most tricked out liquid cooled tj09 ive seen.

he has dual loop frostbite so he has 2 x 120mm rads
if under load your are hitting 85c then temps are an issue. However I'm not sure if another rad will help, if that was the case people with triple rads should never hit over 50c but that does not happen. you got 3 GPUs in there your OC is not gonna be as easy to achieve

Im talking about the rad placement and the sheer massive size of that triple rad. Not to mention the cylinder style reservoir is sweeet.. The fact that he only put one gpu in there is pretty lame..
I think id go with this rad to just because it would look sweet externally mounted..

rad can be on top or in the back also, ya triple rad is big, but wait till you see mine
LDLD sorry I forgot to answer your other question, yes high voltage and high temps can hurt a CPU but with your settings, I'm thinking you got 6 years at least, most times the CPU will die way after you gave up the PC Edited by DST4ME - 02 Apr 2009 at 3:28pm |
