I recently got OF 2 and I like it a lot but sadly there aren't any good servers in my area so some friends and I decided to build our own gaming server. Sadly no-one really knows anything about building our own serverWink. I want to know what components I need to build one.

I would recommend buying from someone who offers game servers.  Building your own server and colocating it in a datacenter is expensive and if something breaks you are responsible for fixing it.

Or if you still want to get your own server, I would recommend renting one from a well known provider.  Let me know if you need a company to buy from.

Do all of the people who will be playing on this server live in New Zealand as well?

Just making sure.

I don't know any datacenters off hand over there.  I looked around a bit but couldn't find any, I can look more if you want.

You can host it off your own internet connection, but generally this is a crappy way to go.

In regards to the actual hardware, a dual core cpu, 2-4GB ram, maybe 320gb hdd will be more than enough to run about any game server.

It depends on the game server, some use more resources than others.  But I generally go with 1 core and 1-2GB ram per game server application.  So if you wanted to run 4 servers on one, you will need a quad core and 4-8GB ram depending on the demands of each one.

So if I run OF 2, CoD4, Crysis and FC2 I'll need 4 cores and 4-8GB ram. Sorry for asking I'm just making sure here.

Venom is correct in stating that your internet is going to be a huge factor in this.  Your server should be speced out to at least this...

CPU: 2x Dual Core Intel Xeon 3.00GHz
Memory: 8GB
Hard Drive: 10,000 rpm
NIC interface
Gigabit
You'll also need to monitor that server closely for cache build-up.  One of the reasons servers get laggy and choppy is because the host company doesn't clear the cache on a regular basis.  High pingers, which is why Venom is asking about where the people live that will access your server, will kill the game-play.  People in the US accessing your server will degrade the game play.  High-pingers are very bad.  Set your server to kick players over 120 ping from the server

Xeons are a bit excessive for this I think, unless they have dropped in price majorly.  A standard quad core should be enough.  8GB would be optimal, but 4-6GB should be enough.  10k RPM drive would be good but not 100% necessary.

I'd agree, Xeons are out there.  I guess you kinda need to know how many slots the server will be.  Servers that carry many slots (64 man and over) can be very taxing on the system, like a BF2 64 man server.

I had a friend run his own BF server from his house back in the day (16 and 32 man) and the thing crashed all the time.  It's been so many years I can't remember what he was using, but it wasn't very reliable.

Anything should be enough, ddr2 800 or ddr3 1066-1333.

Depends, most game servers support linux, which I would recommend.  But if you have never used it before, it will be a huge headache to setup for you.

Windows will also work fine, XP/2003 would be your best bet as they use little resources, though Vista/2008/7 will also work.

You could use a video card from the 90's, the game servers are CPU based.

Decent pricing, though they don't offer very many games.

They also don't list any hardware specs for the servers, might want to contact them first and ask what they run before purchasing.

I actually run a small game server hosting company and would highly recommend renting a server close to your area. Bandwidth in New Zealand and Australia is much more expensive and all the ISP's from around there that I know of have relatively slow response times to other areas which means if you outsource a server you can expect higher pings, however local they are very fast. The prices on those servers per slot seem really high to me, but then again I don't source any servers out of New Zealand or Australia.

Depending on what game server you want to run you may want a higher performance cpu or may want to lean towards more/higher performing memory. For example: If you wanted to run a Counter Strike server with many bots or a Call of Duty server you'd need a really good cpu. But if you were running a server that wasn't as demanding for processing you'd want a little more memory depending on the game.

I thought about that too but the companies I found so far don't offer Far Cry 2, OF2 or Crysis. But I will send them some mails to see if they can offer those games in the near future.

Ah, I knew BF2 and TF2 lol.

Currently looking for datacenters, and I remembered that Internap can have low latency to far away locations, depending on routes and peering.

Try pinging these IPs and post back with the results:
74.63.66.114
76.73.0.5

Start, type "cmd" into the search bar (if vista/7, if xp click run, then type "cmd).

In the Command Prompt, type "ping [ip address]"

It will give you back 4 results, copy/paste those via right clicking then choosing Mark, select the area of text you want, hit Enter to copy the selected text, then you should be able to paste it elsewhere.

Example:
C:\>ping 76.73.0.5

Pinging 76.73.0.5 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 76.73.0.5: bytes=32 time=59ms TTL=54
Reply from 76.73.0.5: bytes=32 time=53ms TTL=54
Reply from 76.73.0.5: bytes=32 time=54ms TTL=54
Reply from 76.73.0.5: bytes=32 time=52ms TTL=54

Ping statistics for 76.73.0.5:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 52ms, Maximum = 59ms, Average = 54ms

My response time to the first one 74.63.66.114 is pretty fast, 45ms average. Try pinging this for me 67.202.106.117
(I'm testing some things and want to get some results from New Zealand).
