Hello, I am new to the forums and I am looking for a new PC. I have been using an iMac which has finally outlived its usefulness. Now I have made the big decision to move back to a PC (for a great number of reasons).
My budget is 2000 and the main purpose of this machine will be editing images in Photoshop CS5, as well as some light gaming on the side. Here's the config I came up with: How does this look? (I live in Arkansas where summers can get pretty hot; do I need more cooling?) Also, does anyone have an estimate on the lifetime of these machines? Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Black OPS Assassin Edition Exterior Finish: - Not Available Trim Accents: - Not Available Processor: Intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: EVGA X58 Micro Edition SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Digital Storm Certified (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Recommended) Expansion Bay: - Not Available Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (64GB Solid State (By: Corsair Nova Series) (Model: CSSD-V64GB2-BRKT) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Seagate/Hitachi/Western Digital (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) (SATA) (Extreme Speed) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Cooler Master V8 High Performance Cooler (Compatible With ONLY i7 Processors) H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - Not Available Chassis Mods: - Not Available Noise Reduction: - Not Available Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: - Not Available Boost Memory: - Not Available Boost OS: - Not Available Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Thanks, John http://www.sebestaphotography.com |

curses! i still cant edit, triple post
for your price range, its a cram but you can get a quality ssd and 470 in there.. do you really need them for what you listed? maybe not, but you said 2k, so i gave you 2k
intel ssd is far superior to pretty much anything else at this time
temps shouldnt really be a huge issue with a haf932 and noctua.. how hot do you mean when you say "pretty hot" sorry im from virginia =P
do you run ac in your room/house?

Well, I will be doing a lot of image editing. My file sizes range from 200meg-several gigs. I was just getting extra space.
As far as temperature, the summers can be in the 90s easily. Is the assassin chassis good with heat management? I run A/C but keep it around 75. |

yea if youre working with files that big hes right, more ram couldnt hurt... but the problem is if you bump up your amount of ram you going to quickly add $100ish to your total..
you would either have to go to 920 with 6gb ram
or 860 with 8 gig ram
(if you wanted/needed to add more)
the assassin draws air in from the bottem and blows out the top, if you run ac most all the time, it could benefit you. i would defnitely keep the case on the floor (not on carpet)
its possible in your setting that you could get equal or better temps with the assassin as you could with the haf932, but again youre talking about adding another $100 to your bill
if you drop the Intel SSD, there will be enough room in your budget for both more ram and the assassin case... might be worth it with your specific needs

Where might one find an 8 gig ram option? Under the options it shows 3, 6, and 12 with various kinds of each. I don't see 8 gigs.

Second build from the left is the i5/1166 platform config. that's where he chose the i7 860 for better performance. Ram here is in multiples of 2. The ones left of that are all base builds for the X58/i900 series platform, where you started.
You could consider this:

I had a thought. What if I went with an SSD for now so I can load programs and such on that now? RAM is easier to upgrade than a hd. If I wait on an SSD, I will have to move programs and such around later. It would be more hassle.
Thoughts? |

Not a bad thought process. Unfortunately, it runs into a wall, because when you change your RAM, you either lose your oc, or you have to undo your oc, I don't know which. Point is, the oc is what takes these systems from the ordinary to the sublime. It can be undone in the bios, but the re-do is a complicated process I find akin to alchemy.
All is not lost, however. the NEED for 12g of RAM is not there. You could easily be quite pleased going with 6, that's still a lot. and less RAM will better your overclock, in some arcane way. Considering how much faster this system will be than anything you've ever seen on your desk, you may never notice the loss.

If you ever get serious with Photoshop in the future, you're going to need the extra memory! Example, thinking about making Panoramic's in HDR, you will it's exciting in this case you're either going to need a lot of what they referred to as "scratched disk space" which slows things down, or a lot of extra memory. Plan to upgrade your cameras, all new still cameras in the future for the most part will have a video upgrade. Once again, good place to have extra memory. This list goes on, especially different software's ever thought about doing slideshow presentations, the best softwareright now is pro show gold or pro show producer. These applications are absolutely intensive in the memory requirements.
Working with Photoshop is quite intensive at times, you want stable processor the new CS5 already has its own problems with "bugs" as it is. My suggestion is to leave the processor just the way it is, in other words no overclocking! Good thing that you have selected a standard secondary hard drive with a lot of space. It's essential at times, dealing with "scratch disk space" I've got no idea how solid-state drives will operate for this requirement. Probably just fine, but not in their limited size as of yet. |
