Have you checked your device manager yet?
All drives should be there. If yours is there and has an orange warning sign it should lead you to the problem. If it's not there, make sure all power leads and cables are plugged in. Edited by Snaike - 03 Apr 2022 at 7:45pm |

Hey Snaike, yeah I’ve checked there, uninstalled the driver that was already there, reset my comp, unplugged the external drive and replugged it in to force the drivers install.

If the drive isn’t showing in device manager them it’s either a bad usb cable or the USB port. Try a different USB port, like a 2.0 instead of a 3.2 for example. Lots of devices dislike 3.2 USB ports. Use a USB port on the back, directly to the motherboard and not a case front port.
Good luck. ![]() |

Hey bprat22, yeah I just gave that a shot right now I tried USB 2 and I tried moving around to different ports to see if that would do the trick and maybe my system would recognize the hard drive and nothing I even used a different external hard drive to see if it would recognize it may be there’s something wrong with the drive or something and no dice, but I am able to connect my iPhone to the computer and it can detect it right away so there something

I think maybe this article could help you. It seems to cover all the bases, so perhaps it will have something to offer.
https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/what-to-do-when-an-external-hard-drive-wont-show-up I've not heard of a drive so large it needs extra power, but yours is 16TB, so... maybe? Or perhaps it will show up in disk management giving you some other options. Hope it helps. ![]() |

My other thought is to go into Bios/UEFI and go to advanced, peripheral and make sure USB is enabled for drive detection. Every bios is different so not sure the exact path.
Sometimes an external drive does need a power supply seperate from USB if the USB can’t supply enough juice. Probably not the case here. ![]() |

I have an 8TB WD My Book external drive and it has its own power adapter. Make sure your is on if it has one. It will not operate otherwise.

Thanks bprat22, MrCheeta, And Cretae for your guys tips, horserator, I had read somewhere in the forum that WD external hard drives worked just fine with digital storm PC’s and I don’t know if maybe the whole dilemma of getting the drive to work would ridiculously be up to the brand or type of drive, I don’t know, gonna try and see if anything will get these drives recognized.
And I don’t know if this is normal whenever I turn on my PC after a while it gives office burning kind of a smell. I don’t know if that’s normal I don’t know if that has anything to do with my dilemma. Edited by Martinguy - 05 Apr 2022 at 3:50pm |

Burning smells are NEVER good. Is it a dusty smell or the magic electrical smoke? If it's dusty, when was the last time your machine got a thorough cleaning, inside and out? If it's the magic electric smoke you need to figure out where that's coming from immediately. Like my electrician friends love to say, "Once you've let the magic smoke out, nothing is going to work right."

If the machine is brand new there would be some burn in smells. However one would think that the stress testing DS does would get those mostly out. Perhaps it is just residual. Pop the covers and give everything a quick clean just to be on the safe side. (Remember to GROUND yourself before touching sensitive parts. I keep one hand on the case and try a light touch with the other.)
With the case opened up you can get in there with your nose as well to find out where the smell is coming from. |

Ok for sure, I have the case off as I’m typing this message and checking everything out to see where the smell is coming from.
Before when I said that the computer could recognize my iPhone now whenever I try to get the information from my iPhone off of the computer it says that there’s no files within the folder, i’m sure it has to be some kind of stupid detail that I’m missing has me going bananas trying to figure out what’s going on |

I’m assuming iTunes is installed on your pc? That’s the transfer medium.
For the smell, make sure your pc isn’t sitting on a rug. A lot of pc have a fan on the bottom pushing air into the power supply. Poor ventilation can overheat the psu. |

I don't use "smart" phones so can't even relate to phone connectivity problem. As to the burn odor, on my system, one of the screws holding the window was rubbing the LED ribbon and finally shorted the wires inside. Sparks and smoke! I was sure it was over but no fire. There are a lot of parts in there with a lot of electrons going around so ....good luck. BTW, the ribbon still works, It just has a brown spot in it. No leds died!

Oh whoa! Horserator, That would’ve scared the beJesus out of me!
I tried every recommendation and for some reason I don’t know why these ports are not working and if they do it’s only a temporary thing so I’m gonna call support and see what they say |

Did you try the Ext. HDD in another system to make sure it is still working? |
