    Posted: 15 Oct 2009 at 3:50pm
I'm posting a new review because my last thread was deleted.
I placed the order for my system on September 3rd over the phone and everything went smoothly. A couple of days later I received a phone call that the video card which I had ordered (285) was from a defective batch. I was given the option of switching to a 275 or waiting for more 285s to come in. I chose to go with a 275. When I received my computer, it was DOA. I reseated everything as I was instructed, still nothing but a dead black screen. I was utterly disappointed. A helpful tech asked me to move the vid card to a different slot. When I did that, it worked. I moved the card back to the original slot and got the same dead black screen. The tech concluded that this was a motherboard problem. It seemed to make sense since the card worked in one slot, but not the other. Unfortunately, this meant I had to send the computer back to DS for repair. I packed it up and shipped it out again. I wasn't sure what to expect during the repair process. I was led to believe that I would receive e-mail updates throughout the repair process similar to what I received during the build process. This was not the case. I never received any confirmation that my computer arrived. The only e-mail I received was after the repair had been completed. It informed that the video card had been replaced and that the system was repacked and ready to ship out. I was alarmed that the motherboard had not been replaced so I placed a phone call to tech support to get more info. I had to try several times because I got the "heavy call volume" message. I finally spoke to someone in tech support who informed me that the video card had indeed been replaced and that the computer had passed all the tests. I have to admit that I was worried about this, but what could I do? I finally got my computer last night. I was very nervous when I hit that power button, but to my surprise it booted up properly. I have no idea what was going on with the previous video card. How it could work in one PCI slot but not another is beyond my knowledge. However, the new card works fine so I guess it wasn't a motherboard problem after all. I'd like to note that my motherboard is an EVGA LE and the initial graphics card I received was an XFX. They replaced the video card with an EVGA card which works fine so far. Also, when I unpacked my computer last night I noticed that the accessories box was still unopened so I still had the old cd and manuals from the XFX card. The EVGA manuals and disc were not provided to me.
Overall, I'm fairly satisfied. It's very disappointing that I placed my order on September 3rd and didn't get a working computer until October 14th, but I understand that these things happen. My only complaints are that I wish someone would have spoken to me via phone or email once they receieved the computer back for repair and that they would have given me the manuals, disks and accesories that were included with my replacement EVGA card. I will update this review once I have more time with my new computer. So far it looks great and I'm excited to use it more.

So far, so good. Seems the new video card is holding up. I'm very happy with how my computer is working so far. No complaints on the finished product. I just wish that they would have done a little something to make up for all I went through and how long I had to wait to get a working computer. I'm still trying to figure how it was possible that my initial video card worked in one slot but not another. If anyone can explain to me why that happened, I'd like to understand it.

Sorry these aren't great pics but I used my cell phone. I'll try to get a camera and post something better. Not sure why this hasn't been moved to the review section. Hope the addition of pictures will hasten that...

Call me crazy, but I don't think that was a very good cable management job on the last pic . . . :\

Thanks guys.

@DST4ME Yeah, that's what both the tech who helped me on the phone and I both felt was the problem when he instructed me to move the video card to a different slot and it worked fine. It seemed to be a motherboard problem/faulty slot and this is why I shipped my system back. Had it been just the video card, return shipping would not have been necessary. However, they did not replace the mobo. All they did was replace the XFX 275 card with an EVGA one. I don't know why that solved the problem, but it did. I'm just relieved to have a working computer. I'm also relieved that I have a nice warranty in case something else goes wrong or if it turns out the motherboard does have a faulty slot.

Yes, I knew someone would point out the wiring from that picture. When I initially got the computer, all those extra wires you see were shoved underneath the plastic holders for the disk drives (not sure what you call those). They were shoved so tightly that the bottom two had popped loose from the railings and were on a steep angle. I finally decided this bothered me too much so I pulled the wires out and put the plastic thingamajiggies back into the slots the way they were supposed to be. I scoured the pics on the forums to see if anyone else had this situation or for some guidance as to where I should place those wires. No luck. So I just put them where I found space as you see in the picture.

Yes, I do think the wiring job was sloppy compared to the pics I have seen of others systems on here. If anyone has any reccomendations as to what I can do to clean it up, it would be very much appreciated.

@Agnt, it would have been fine to leave the wires where they originally were and just remove those plastic drive trays if you are not using them, and store them somewhere else for the time.

Thanks merc, I was wondering about doing that. Only thing that stopped me was that I was afraid of losing those trays. So I just put it like it is at the moment. I looked at all the other pics on these forums and didn't see anyone else with the same situation so I had no idea what else to do with those excess wires. It just really bothered me the way it came because the cables had been shoved in so tightly that not one but 2 of those trays were on an angle after having been pressured out of the railings by the cables. Is it pretty? No, but I waited so long for a working computer that I'm just happy to be able to use it at this point. I can't imagine there is any danger in leaving the wires where they are, is there? Any input here would be appreciated. If not, I'll probably just leave them where they are or maybe remove those storage trays and put them back there. Thanks again for any input.
Btw, I do love my computer. If not for the brutally long wait (placed order on Sptember 3rd, had to send back computer due to defective video card, finally received working computer on Oct 13th) caused by having to send the cpu back since it was DOA and the sloppy wiring job, I would give DS an A. I was hoping they would do a little something to make up for it (vid card upgrade back to the original 285 I was supposed to get), but they did not. So, overall I'll give them a B.
I also wish I had been given all the disks and manuals for all the components even if it's not completely necessary. When the computer was returned after the reapir, none of the manuals or disk for the new EVGA card were included. I know this is minor, but it still would have been nice.

Hrm, seems to be taking an awful long time to move some of the reviews from this section to the proper one...

We are launching a new customer reviews based system soon, and once it's ready we will be more than happy to move your review into it.

I am sorry about your concerns about the 'wire job' for your replacement system. Looking closer at the pictures, it appears that the technician did route the cables to hide as many as possible (CPU 12v, 24-pin ATX, optical drive SATA and power, an even the cold cathode light at the bottom); but, what it apperas is that the extra cables were zip tied together for future upgrades/easy access for the customer in the technicians eyes. Usually we hide all of the extra cables, and this was most likely a misunderstanding from a new system builder that joined our team.

If you would like us to re-wire your system, let us know, we'll be more than happy to issue a pickup and cover all shipping costs.

EDIT: After speaking with the customer, he moved the cables out because he did not want the extra wires inside the hard drive when he received the system. I thought it came wired that way. Broken%20Heart Our QA inspectors are very analytical when it comes to the builds that leave our facility, and I was about to have a meeting with him in regards to this.

Thank you for your response Alex. That is very generous, but I am enjoying my system too much to let it go for something that is so unimportant. After the long wait I had caused by the defective video card (I still would love to hear from someone more knowledgeable than I am regarding why that initial card worked in one slot and not another) I'm just happy to have a working computer!
I want to make clear again that what the picture shows is NOT how I received it. The wires were tucked underneath the plastic drive holders on the right side. However. it was such a tight squeeze that two of them had popped out of the railings and were just sort of hanging there. I didn't like that so I pulled the wires out and put them where they are now. Would I like it to look cleaner? Sure, but it's not a big deal. I searched all the other pictures on here for ideas as to how to where to place the wires, but I had no luck finding anyone with a similar set-up or problem. I love my system so far, and I look forward to using it for a long time.

Understood, I thought it came wired that way. Broken%20Heart Our QA inspectors are very analytical when it comes to the builds that leave our facility, and I was about to have a meeting with him in regards to this.

I would say, in your previous rig, the video card slot must have suffered shock/damage to the PCB joints from the sheet weight/shock of having the video card inside it. This is usually caused by mishandling by the shipping company.

We recently developed a new packaging system that uses a clear film which keeps the system floating during transit. It involves no use of foam either. Another unique innovation at Digital Storm in order to offer our customers the best.

Thanks, Alex. That certainly makes sense but I still can't figure out why the new card works in that same slot. When I initially called for help because I was getting just a black screen, the tech asked me to move the card to the slot beneath it. When it worked in that slot, the logical conclusion was that it was the video card slot on the motherboard that was the problem. So I had the system sent back to replace the motherboard. However, all that was replaced was the video card, not the motherboard. Yet, the new card works fine in the slot that was rpeviously not working. I'm not sure if I am explaining this clearly or not Big%20smile but I just can't figure out what the initial problem could have been since the new card works fine in that same slot. Not a big deal since the bottom line is my system now works and I am enjoying it very much!!! I was just curious.
