Hi, All,
I'm new here. I have a new rig being built as we speak (specs at the bottom of post) and now I've got to get a monitor to go with it! I am a college professor who researches cognitive neuroscience and technology-mediated learning. In non-academic speak, it means that I play video games for a living...it's a tough life, but somebody has to do it. I have terrible vision and I'm a migraineur so I need a monitor that make long hours in front of it bearable. I'm looking at two monitors: Acer XB270HU bprz 27-inch WQHD NVIDIA G-SYNC (2560 x 1440) Widescreen Monitor OR LG Electronics UM95 34UM95 34-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor Is anybody gaming on 21:9? It looks like RPG heaven. 34" would be perfect for my workflow, but is it going to give me a headache to game on (too much screen to watch? what about FOV?)? How small is that 3440x1440 typeface (I know that I can blow it up, but is it going to get blurry on me?)? Can I live without the 144Hz on the Acer? I did just buy an awesome computer here...I don't want to hamstring it. Thanks for your input on my VERY FIRST post! go here: http://tftcentral.co.uk/
you can get really thorough reviews that can answer a lot of what you're asking. with your physical concerns/needs read up on this (from tft central's website): Backlight Dimming and Flicker We tested the screen to establish the methods used to control backlight dimming. Our in depth article talks in more details about a common method used for this which is called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). This in itself gives cause for concern to some users who have experienced eye strain, headaches and other symptoms as a result of the flickering backlight caused by this technology. We use a photosensor + oscilloscope system to measure backlight dimming control with a high level of accuracy and ease. These tests allow us to establish
1) Whether PWM is being used to control the
backlight If PWM is used for backlight dimming, the higher the frequency, the less likely you are to see artefacts and flicker. The duty cycle (the time for which the backlight is on) is also important and the shorter the duty cycle, the more potential there is that you may see flicker. The other factor which can influence flicker is the amplitude of the PWM, measuring the difference in brightness output between the 'on' and 'off' states. Please remember that not every user would notice a flicker from a backlight using PWM, but it is something to be wary of. It is also a hard thing to quantify as it is very subjective when talking about whether a user may or may not experience the side effects. Edited by db188 - 12 Aug 2015 at 11:01pm |

Thanks for your response, db188. I used this site (amongst others) to narrow down to these two. Unfortunately, I learned today from DS that my GTX970 is unlikely to power these options well, so I am back to the drawing board looking for a 1080p option.

Well, I wish that I had spoken to you on the phone then, db188 when I built the rig, because I have no idea. I went from uber-excited about the build to...it can't even run a fricking monitor. :( This has not been the greatest customer experience I have ever had. Despite three phone calls and a text chat since I posted yesterday, no one can even tell me anything conclusive about the status of my computer. I have been in Stage 1 for 8 days, but it appears that my case may have been back ordered. The guy on the phone today told me to call back on day 15(!) and see if it had come in yet! When I told him that I was considering canceling my order, my phone binged with an email that I had been moved to stage 3. The forums here had me convinced that this would be the best rig ever, but I'm just not so sure anymore. I guess I'll just have to wait and see in "an estimated 9-15 days." I'm going back to read more happy stories on the forum...

Hi Lioncoeur,
FYI - I was stuck on Stage 1 for about the same length of time (I ordered the rig on the 3rd and got an indication that payment was processed for Stage 1 that day). I didn't get another email until the 12th indicating it was moved to Stage 2. After that, it all moved pretty quickly going from Stage 2 thru Stage 5 all on the 12th. I just hit Stage 7 today so it may be due to the number of orders. I'd suggest calling them as you get a quicker response normally. Either that emailing Alex is pretty effective too. Good luck - you have a nice rig there and don't despair, just call them!! |

Thanks for your message, Dax. I actually have read your forum post three or four times over the last few days holding on to hope. :) Since my last post, I managed to move up to stage 5 myself. I did email management, too, but I am hoping that it was just a miscommunication and that all is well...you and I will be gaming on beautiful new rigs before we know it. (My husband, who no longer wanted me to despair either, bought me the Acer XB270HU. He said the worst that happens is that DS is right and I can't power it and we send it back and get something else. Otherwise, I'll have the monitor and the PC I want...It was a bloody brilliant solution, I think. :) )
