    Posted: 19 Jan 2010 at 2:56pm
I am looking to buy a new computer pretty soon and while I have not been very serious about gaming since the death of Dark age of Camelot and when I was finally bored with raiding on WoW, I plan to get back into it once I find some games I am interested in. One thing that has been on my mind is the new 3d stuff coming out. My main question is should I wait for the new NVIDIA cards/3d glasses or will 1 GTX285 1gb and the current glasses handle the current software? I was planning on getting the additional GTX later when I figured the computer would need a boost (+ save some money). I have had the current computer for roughly 5-6 years so I am far out of date on current tech so any advice and/or criticism would be appreciated. Also as far as resolution I currently run 1360by768 but would likely move up once I get the next computer.

As far as main preferences go:
1. I like the idea of 2x HDDs in Raid0, mainly curious about it and want to give it a shot in the next system
2. NVIDIA, I have run nothing but NVIDIA g-cards as long as I can remember so would like to stay with it.
3. I would prefer air cooled because I do not like the idea of liquid in something that costs 3k+ and has electricity running through it.

So far the build looks like this: 375292

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this.

Drop the 285 Classified Edition, the only time I suggest that is if your going with the 4x sli classified motherboard, thats what those cards where designed for. So use the regular 285 card.

ESA does not work with i7 because it is intel based and the esa was designed for nvidia based.

Rather then Windows 7 ultimate, just go with Windows 7 professional, you can get the xp compatibility mode which is what most people upgrade for.

Go with the 1000w corsair.

You will need a bigger case, so get something bigger as well, the HAF 922 is a great choice in that regard.

1. raid 0 if you lose the raid unit or a drive your screwed
2. nvidia does not have dx11 support and the ati 5xxx series is better atm... nvidia's new card expected april/may. unless you are doing 3d video editing or folding we recomend the ati cards sicne they have dx11 support and scale better in dx10 games.
3. have no fear with LC it is non conductive so your hardware is safe. you get better temps under load (as long as it is real LC like frostchill and subzero... asetek is crap)

follow what sarah says... and i have my own input too

case: 922 (MT) or 932 (FT)

psu: the 1000watt corasir is very quiet, extremly reliable, and has a great warranty

the hdd volume is too large on the os. once yiou start to put a dent into it... it will take forever to mainatin, drefrag, scan, backup ect. if i knew your budget i could recccomend something

killerzeno pro: pointless lag is isp dependant not hardware dependant. if you isp boggs down or the host isp your getting lag regardless of hardware save the money put it to something useful.

video card: as sarah says not the right choice... give me your resolution and your overall budget so i can give you something better for your needs.

upgraded fans: you wont need them with the noctua and they are going to make your system loud.

esa: drop it read what sarah wrote

noise suppression: all it does is trap noise in... with that hot air... your choking your system with it

vid boost: you will only gain a measly 7%-10% from it and it creates a lot of heat making your components run hotter. you wont notice the difference we are talking minimal fps gain on 1 card.

mem boost: you wont notice the difference between 1600mhz and 2000mhz in gaming no point to it

os boost: unless you know what your doing with the os i would stay away from it.

os: go pro ult is a waste you have no need for it.

virus protection: get eset 4

display:... the only 3d game i know of is res evil 5.  check out dell and www.newegg.com for monitors. a good panel has a min of 170+ identical ht/vt display viewing angles. once we know what your monitor is then we can give you a video card.

give us the following info and we will design one for you

budget
resolution
use of comp
if gaming which ones and what would you like to play that you can't

hmmm....

Case strongly suggest the 932.
has enough room for future upgrades and long lasting

actually nvidia does have cards that support DX11
But for high end gaming, ATI has better/faster cards that support DX11

ok about noise suppression, it's not going to be so hot it'll choke your system
unless it's so packed with dust theres no heat exchange going on. but that's a different story.
either way it wont make a huge difference on sound, mainly cause you'd have to speed up the fans to create better airflow.

ram speed 1600mhz vs 2000mhz will make some amount of difference but nothing major if you're just gaming with your pc.
especially during OC.  only reason why i wouldnt mind a 2000mhz ddr3 is if I can lower it down to 1600mhz running at CL5 or less @ low volts

and yeah corsair psu is the way to go

Wow, first off thank you guys for all the info. You guys have pretty much answered most of my questions but some of the stuff mentioned has brought up new questions.

1. I have been reading some articles and different posts around here and seems that ATI is now the g-card of choice. Will the ATI cards be compatible with the 3d glasses? or will they make their own after awhile?

2. I looked at the SSD hard drives but they just seem to be too expensive right now compared to just running 2 hard drives in Raid0, how much of an increase is it?

3. I know on the pull down menu there is not an option for a smaller hard drive but if I talked to someone at DS do you think it would be possible to buy like 2x300 or 2x500 hard drives?

4. I originally wanted the 932 but i read on one article about how loud it is and that worried me so that was why I dropped down to the other one. Are the issues with it fixed?

5. Which ATI card do you guys recommend between the 5870, 5870 XFX HD, 5970. I will likely get 1 now and add an additional one at a later time.

6. This may sound strange but I never built a computer to run at a specific resolution, I always just get what I feel is the best computer I can buy in my price range and run it at whatever resolution I feel it looks best at. What resolution should I be shooting for?  I currently have a 23inch Hannspree widescreen (max resolution is 1920x1080) that I will be using as the monitor if I do not get the 3d glasses combo.

I almost forgot, if I did get the windows tweaks and found out that I was missing out something I needed couldn't I just re-install windows? I would assume that everything needed for gaming, online gaming, and surfing the internet would all be retained.

If you do get the windows tweaks, and want something re-enabled it is very easy to do so and im sure many folks here on the forums as well as our technical staff could help you do so.

Sweet, because that was one of the reasons I was very interested in buying a computer here. I hate buying a comp and have it loaded down with stuff I will never need/use.

Sadly, I will have to wait towards march to buy one because the ATI cards will not work with the 3d vision.

re enalbling services is not always that easy, cause sometimes we just don't know all the services that is needed, so therefore I would recommend against windows tweak and also you will not notice the difference.

if you reinstall, nothing will be retained, all games/apps and etc will all have to be reinstalled from fresh, the only games that you maybe able to save are the ones that don't use any regkeys, which most games/apps do.

also in these days of quad core, 6GB of ram and etc, windows tweak will not help much, these pcs can run 4 or more operating systems and not even flinch.

the windows tweaks made the biggest difference in the xp days when we were single core and 1GB of ram, we disabled services to free up ram for other things, now in days we got 4GB or 6GB of ram, disabling services will not help any apps or games run any faster, and the difference in the os itself is so little you won't notice it.

as for the rest of your questions:

1. ati gives the best performance in games, but for 3d stuff you better wait for the new nvidia cards.

2. raid does not improve seektime and ssds have zero seektime, so even in raid a good ssd will do better but yes prices are high.

3. you can request whatever you like, it will just cost more.

4. whoever told you that the 932 is a loud case is an idiot, plus if you are worried about noise, 90% of your noise comes from your gpu's fans, so no matter what, the gpu fans under load will over power the sound of anything else.

5. if you do go with ati you want the regular version, leave the xfx alone, and the one you want would be the 5870.
