Hello, I'm looking to buy two computers for a relative and me in preparation for the fall and winter games. I wanted advice on two builds that I came up with. I also had a few questions:
1. Is the Integrated Motherboard Audio enough or should I invest in a Sound Card? If I do, which sound card is the best? 2. The Corsair K95 keyboard came out, and it looks nice but does anyone know if it's worth getting? If I got the keyboard it would be for me not my relative, and I play RTS's like StarCraft 2, FPS's, and Turn Based Strategy games. Budget: Around $3500 for each computer. Expectations: Looking for computers that can game on very high settings on a 1080p monitor, but can still handle a 2560x1600 monitor if need be. Usage: High Definition Gaming; general web surfing Special Needs: Looking for quiet computers with great storage for music and games and that have great cooling. I like to stick with single graphics card setups instead of SLI. Welcome to the DS forums HAWK! Looks like you've built some incredible machines that will rock for a long time. The Titan is a monster and unless your looking at running multiple monitors, you might want to consider the 780 (about $400 less). The 780 can usually keep up with the Titan on a single monitor (unless 4k is in your future!).
Once you get you rig you'll have to come back to share pics & a review!
To answer your question about the audio - if you're an audiophile, upgrade to at the X-Fi card (ZxR if you can afford it). Otherwise the built in audio should be fine. Edited by fstcvc - 04 Aug 2013 at 11:07am |

For what your using it for I don't believe you need a Titan, I'd go with a GTX 780 and that should max out almost any game your playing at the res.
And take that cpu up to 6 cores and you should have a rocking system for years to come. You can always upgrade your video card if you need to, but processors are a lot harder. |

Thanks for the replies. I picked the Titan that way I could get any extra FPS if I decided to go the 2560x1400 or 4K route for a monitor.
I heard on the forums that the 6 Core CPUs aren't necessary unless you are doing 3D editing or other tasks that would maximize the CPU's full potential. Currently all I would be doing is gaming so I figured I wouldn't need it. Correct me if I'm wrong on this point. I also had questions about the motherboard that I'm choosing. If I get a Z87 chipset motherboard, should I get the ASUS Sabertooth or the ASUS Maximus VI EXTREME? Lastly, If I get the X79 chipset motherboard, should I choose the ASUS Sabertooth X79 or the ASUS Rampage IV EXTREME X79?

Hi Hawk... Stick with the Z87 Sabertooth unless the added money for the Maximus isn't an issue. The Z87 Maximus is primarily for those that want the option to go tri-sli, 3x video card or more. It has other features for those that want to push overclocking, etc. but for most, not needed.
The Z87 platform only has 16 lanes of PCIe for the video cards, x16 in single and x8x8 in sli, and the Maximus adds more lanes to accommodate additional slots for cards. You don't need a 6-core for gaming. The 6 core chip and the quad channel ram motherboards that go with it , are for the apps you mentioned. It doesn't hurt of course but not needed. The Rampage 4 with X79 is an overclockers dream. For those that love to tweek the rig for all they can get. Not needed, but some love to tweek. Hope this helps and good luck.

bprat, I was saying to go with the 6 core if he wants a GTX 780. Anyhow most games don't require that I just like to future proof.
Thats a great build have fun with your new rig. And thanks bprat for helping him out. ![]() Edited by gloryofthesky - 05 Aug 2013 at 10:53am |

Thanks everyone for all your advice and help. I'm looking forward to my awesome rig.
Oh almost forgot, I've heard people say that the Haswell CPUs don't take too well to overclocking, so should I stick to Level 1 for my 4770K's OC or should I brave Level 2? My rig would be the Cooler Master 942 Haf X with the Noctua NH-D14. Edited by HAWK - 05 Aug 2013 at 1:11pm |

Love the HafX with Noctua D14. Quality and dependability.
I would stay with level 1 oc. Not much additional performance between 4.3 and 4.5 plus the stage 2 might need stage 3 water. Safer, less heat with little sacrifice. |

As bprat22 has said, I would also stick w stage 1 OC on the CPU unless your using a custom water cooling setup. That is the only method I'd trust for stability, reliability & longevity on that high of on OC.
