Well it is time to upgrade to a new machine. Got one for my mom a few months back from DS and extremly happy with it and their support. I already have a View Sonic 24 inch at 1920x1080.

change your case to a haf or sniper for better airflow, drop the upgraded fans, they are loud, change your psu to 1000w corsair, do you play gta4?
make HDD1 a 1TB HDD and drop the 1.5TB HDD. In a few month buy a ssd and use that for HDD1 for OS/Games/Apps, and push the 1TB to HDD2 and use it for storage. |

OK
I understand the advice to change to the HAF or Sniper. {Got mom the HAF 922}
I see now that for very little I can find the same fans as stock with LEDs.
what would you suggest for cooling if I wanted to stay with the original case. I would like to have easy control of fan speed as well.
No I do not play GTA4 and understand that Cysis would be at lower then max settings if I decided to play it.
Thank you for your time.

ya the side fan for the haf is like $25. and all 3 fans, front/side/top are all the same size, so if you wanted you could change the side and top fan and make them led like the front and it will cost less then the fan upgrade here and the oem fans are much more quiet. BTW I meant the haf 932 sine you are looking for a full tower.
ok then if you don't play gta4 then you won't need the 2GB version of the 5870, the 1GB will do fine. you are not gonna be able to control all the fans, the case fans can't be controlled. If you ask me the raven is not a great case tho ablah will disagree cause he has one, but if you ask around nobody will recomend it over the other cases here. IMHO you are better off with the haf 932, hailstorm or 950si, but for a system on air, the haf has the best airflow. why spend so much more money on the case, then more money on the extra fans, when the haf gives you the best airflow stock and for so much less, leaving you to spend your money on thing that are more important. but if you still want it, look around for some low dba but high cfm fans, like the Nexus 120mm Real Silent case fans. don't forget to change your psu to corsair. I am looking for a case that will complement my media room as well as perform well. I do understand that the HAF's are the best air cooling casses to be had. My media room is kept pretty cool. It only gets to maybe 80f on the hottest of days.
I don't see the Hailstorm or 950si as options but I guess when ordering if I ask they can change it. If I end up going that route.
Yes I see you like the corsair better for the psu... Is it a cleaner power or more reliable? or both?
What really is the advantages of the 2G vs the 1G 5870? And is the sappire vapor really any better then the reg version. (I usually like nvidia better but they dropped the ball this year in my opinon)
Thank you.

80f is pretty hot for a room with a pc, 70f and lower would be considered cool. your gpu under load in a room that is 80f is gonna be running pretty hot.
the corsair has better quality/clean power and reliability. the advantage of 2GB of vram over 1GB vram is that games like gta4 that need more vram have it, otherwise most games give you good aa with 1GB of vram. the sappire vapor is a tad bit oced more then the stock, oc the stock card and you get the same results. however at your res you won't need the oc and will not see the difference. |

Yeah I'm talking one to two days out of the year would it get to 80f... If I don't turn onthe AC. I live in Nor Cal way up on the coast the outside hottest bay of the year might get to the mid to high 70's
So what about any of the other cases? Will they stay cool enough with just the Noctua 14 or should I think about LC.
The money is not the issue it is the performance for the money and what do I need vs want.
Thanks

if your room temp is high then no matter what you go with you will have high temps, with LC its the fans that blow air on the rad to keep it cool, if they are blowing hot air, that is not going to be much help.
out of all the cases the haf will give you the best shot at best temps on air. I think you will be fine but on the warm sides of the temps. its more your gpu's temps that we are worried about, they tend to get the hottest. Edited by DST4ME - 14 Apr 2010 at 3:37am |
