Hi, I am ordering a new pc for flight sims. I am thinking this config might do well, but I am no expert. I currently have a DS system that I love but am not able to move my settings up all the way. (close though) My current system is not over clocked at all. Is this a good performance gain as opposed to cost? Any suggestions are welcome. Is the GTX 280 much better than my 7950GX2.(worth the extra cost)

I found the CPU in there. Also is the 10,000 RPM HD a big improvement for flight simming? I currently run FS9 all out and must back off the settings with FSX and X-Plane. (excellent sim by the way)

OK, 2 questions on that ticket.
1. would my Geforce 7950 GX2 card keep up with this system? or is it to outdated? 2. I notice some set ups with only one optical drive. Is there a specific reason for that? |

most people don't' need 2 optical drives, and money is better spent on other hardware, but if you need 2 just go back and add another.
the 280 GTX from what I understand is a better GPU. remember we are just recommending

Recommendations are just what I am looking for. I was thinking of tweaking the OS. Do you know if that is really a plus for simming, and what services would be diabled?

if you like I can help you with that, all you do is really disable uac and take control of folder permissions.
you can always visit blackviper's site and do some tweaking yourself |

Sorry to be such a know nothing. What would be gained if I disable the UAC, and will it cause any security concerns?

no it won't, it removed the annoying prompt that you will get every time you want to do something security is achieved with these: 1. common sense 2. up to date good anti-virus (eset security suite) 3. up to date good firewall(eset security suite) 3. up to date good anti spyware(spysweeper) |

why would he want to pay 3000 for a ddr2 system when he can get ddr3 and a q9650 for less?:

I like that set up DST4ME. My question there is, is the PSU enough for this set up and one more optical drive. I would also like to use the tweak the memory optin. Is there a benefit to that? Or would I be wasting money on that? Also I have never used 2 HD's before. Would I put my windows and sims on the raptor and all other storage and programs on the slower drive? Or how does that work

psu is enough for more then that.
no real benefit to os tweak, like I said just use the uac tool I listed and if you need we can give you all folder permisions. I have over 8 HDDs, 4 internal and 4 external. yes os/apps/games go on HDD1 (raptor) and media/personal files go on HDD2 (500GB) if your games are too big you may want to go with a veloci Raptor which is the bigger and faster version of digital Raptor Edited by DST4ME - 29 Oct 2008 at 2:21pm |

I was actually wondering about the memory tweak. I don't think I'll go with the OS tweak. I was on the fence about that one anyway. I tried to DL the UAC tool but the DL link wasn't working. I would like the folder permissions as well.
Thank you |

the only difference between our config and mine is that I have the ddr3 system for less and all I'm missing from your system is a $35 DVD drive.
the x48 doesn't support ddr3 so obviously thats not an option when going ddr3. Edited by DST4ME - 29 Oct 2008 at 3:05pm |

Cool Got it. Thank you guys so much for all your help. I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions before I settle on the final set up. Feel free to keep the suggestions coming.

Pretty sure both use micron d9s for all their pc2-8500 + ram. So it just comes down to personal preference and previous experience. |

corsair was crapping out there for a bit so we the customers started advising other customers to go with ocz. I agree with skyR, it really comes down to matter of preference. OCZ does have a better price |
