Ok so, I am looking to build a powerfull gaming machine for around 1800-2000$.
I want a machine that can run UT2007, CoD4, basically all the latest, at least with 50+ frames constant.
I am just not very computer oriented. Any suggestions, recommendations, or advice would be greatly appreciated.
-Thanks, Bryant.

This should give you a good starting place.
It is set up so that in the furture when you have additional funds for upgrading you can add a second 8800 GT in SLI.
This comes in at $1981 and includes overclocking of the CPU. Edited by gdhart - 08 Nov 2007 at 11:23pm |

Thanks, One question though, is vista worth it? Everyone seems to be crazy for dx-10... is it worth it to grab vista 64 and 4g of ram right now? I mean do enough games really take advantage of dx-10 or that much ram?
Also, is it possible to grab 32bit windows xp now, and then upgrade to 64 bit vista later, using the same hard drive? Edited by Bryant - 08 Nov 2007 at 11:43pm |

Look at Vista as a neccesary evil to use DX-10 tbh. Hopefully it'll get better, just like XP got better. As for games right now requiring 4GB and 64-Bit? No. Games within the coming year for 4GB, 64-Bit? The buzz is, yes.
It's pretty easy to add another OS if you plan ahead and start with XP. I have my 80GB HDD partitioned 10GB/35GB/35GB for XP, Vista 32, and when the time comes, Vista 64, and use my 160GB HDD for everything else. So far that's worked out well, as both XP and Vista 32's partitions are about 1/2 full after installing everything for each OS.
It certainly can be done with one hard drive, I just opted for two because I figured it'd make re-installs of the operating systems relatively painless. Just partition one large drive into small parts. If I had it to do over, I might have given XP slightly more, say ~15GB, and Vista more like ~32GB. Just tell DSO what you want for partitions when you order.

Tyler is correct. If you are planning on having this system last 3-5 years the games in that time frame will start using more memory, 4 cores and 64 Bit processing but most games know only use 2 Gig and currently only Crysis will use 4 cores. SP1 for Vista is scheduled to be out in early-mid Q1 2008 so you would only have a couple of months to wait for a more stable Vista OS.
Also, you can have DS put multiple Operating Systems on the machine, you just have to pay the extra cost of the second OS.
As for the memory I would go with 2 Gig for now and upgrade later when you need the extra 2 gig. I actually when with 4 Gig as I have the funds to do it now but went with Vista 32 Bit and plan on upgrading in a year or so to 64 Bit. One thing to note about using 4 Gig of Ram with Vista 32 Bit the system will only be able to access ~2.7 to 3.0 Gig of the ram due to 32 bit OS limit of only addressing a total of 4 Gig for all hardware, including the Video card. (My system can only access 2.7 Gig as I have a 768 Meg Video Card)
Other things you may want to consider is how much storage space you will need. I myself went with 2x500GB WD 7200s in Raid 0 as I needed space for burning family digital movies and faster speed for games. What I put on the configration for you was a Raptor for a fast OS/Game drive and a 320 GB for file storage.
Another thing to help with determining the Video card requirement is the size display you will be using. Larger screens require higher end cards to handle the higher resolutions.
Other things that are not considered in this build is if the budget you provided needs to include the display, mouse, keyboard or produtivity software. If any of these are require, let the me know and I can provide a new configuration that includes them.
One last point on the suggested configuration, DSO will overclock the Q6600 to between 2.7-3.0 Ghz and is also providing the information on how to do it in a guide on these forums if you need to raaise or lower the OC. Edited by gdhart - 09 Nov 2007 at 8:30am |
