Ok so I have looked on this site for a few months now and will be ready to purchase a new PC soon. I'm currently on a old Dell 4600 pentium 4. So of course anything I choose will be a major upgrade. I mainly just play WoW, but also have Cod4 and would like to play the new modern warfare 2 when it releases. Heard a lot of good things about DS and many bad things about ibuy and cyberpower. DS was an easy choice for me.
I was looking over the i5 value 2....i5 enthusiast 1....and the i7 extreme 1 prebuilts. I don't see me spending over $1500 but those seem nice enough for me. So which prebuilt do you recommend? I would like 64 bit vista so it gives me the option to buy more memory but I could not tell which those prebuilts come with. Another question. If i buy one of those prebuilts, can I use this Dell monitor? I don't know the specs for it, but its a 17 or 19in LCD. currently play wow at 1280x1024. will that go higher with new video card? or would i need new monitor? Been so long since I bought a PC, so sorry for all the questions. Any help is appreciated thank you. |

well resolution wise, deals with monitors. So if your lookings for a bigger resolution you will be looking for a bigger monitor. From what DST4ME told me is that you would only need sli 2 graphics card if u have a resolution of 1900x1280 or w/e it was. If ur not going to upgrade ur monitor stick with enthusiast 1. If u are then go for extreme 2 or extreme3 which provides more growth room. and idk about what vista bit version. As for me im getting extreme 3 as soon as i get a new credit card that has unlimited or atleast 3k spending cap. cant wait D:.
don't like my suggestions? wait for DST4ME or others. DST4ME should be replying here soon since hes always helping people!! good luck (: |

Your monitor has a max res of 1600 x 1200 or lower, for that you will need only one gpu.
now if you get a bigger monitor down the road then you will need 2 gpus so that you can play games at high settings and at 1900 x 1200. wow does not use sli, so you will not benefit from sli with that game, however cod4 does support sli and if you ever get a bigger monitor you will need dual sli for that game and other games that support it. most of the prebuils come with vista 64bit, cause 32bit can't use 6GB of ram, so where you see 6GB of ram, that system has a 64-bit os. so how does the next 3 years look for you? do you think you will need to upgrade your monitor? do you need a sound card or a wireless card? Hit the "Buy/See Specs" button when looking at them. It'll show you exactly what you're getting. For example, the Extreme I version comes with 3GB of DDR3 RAM, and the Windows Vista 64-bit OS.
Be aware the "prebuild specials" , for the most part, can't be reconfigured. That is, what you see is what you get. You'd have to go custom configuration to pick & choose parts.
Surely you can see the model & number on the monitor somewhere? Just find that & google for your specs.
As for your gaming, you won't need high res to play Warcraft, but it'd sure be nice for COD4. A lot of other shooters like Crysis and Far Cry 2 look good at higher resolutions - point being, you'll never know what you'll be playing 2-3 years down the road. So even if you get a video board that can put out resolutions your monitor can't support, you might be able to pick up a new monitor in the future. Edited by Psimon - 18 Sep 2009 at 8:31pm |

thank you for ur replies.
Ya i did view the specs on the prebuilts, maybe it was just one but I did not see where it showed 32 or 64 bit. and dst, honestly I'm not sure what i will be playing in 3 yrs but yeah I'm sure if I get a nice PC and start playing newer games I would have no prob buying a new monitor. next game i buy will be the new modern warfare game in november. and i see you asked about sound and wireless card. atm i just use a usb wireless adapter which connects to the router in the living room. And I have a sound card in this old dell. I figured i would use onboard sound or just buy a new one later. Since i don't see me spending over 1500, the prebuilts looked like the best deals for me. and one video card should be good enough for now, maybe with a possibility to do SLI down the road. |

very good then, do you use your usb wireless adapter 24/7 to connect to the net? I have been looking around for people that are doing that to see if they have any trouble with it.
if you think you might get a sound card down the road you have to make sure that you will have room for it, so let me know which prebuild you are going with so I can tell you its limitations as far as growth. like I said, for 1600 x 1200 one 275 is all you need, once you get to 1900 x 1200 (24" monitor) then you will need 2 gpus, and keep in mind for games that don't support sli (like wow) a 275 will perform better then a 295. Ya I use my wireless adapter to connect 24/7. I usually have no problems with it, however it does disconnect from time to time. To fix it I just unplug the usb and plug it back in and it works again. Not sure why it does it. But ya it rarely does.
Most likely I will keep this monitor I have at first so one 275 will be fine. Another question, If I decided on the I5 enthusiast 1 build, I see it comes with free liquid cooling. Is that a pretty safe deal? I had a friend who used liquid cooling once, although he did install it himself and it was when they first came out, after awhile it leaked on his gpu and ruined it. I think that's all it hurt. Just kinda scares me to have liquid inside the PC. ![]() thanks again for more help. |

keep in mind the i5 platform can't be updated to the next round of cpus (6 core) but the i7 with socket 1136 can be (920, 950, 975).
LC is safe and its under warranty. Edited by DST4ME - 02 Oct 2009 at 7:36pm |
