I'm probably going to use my 24 inch Dell monitor I'm already using for my old computer, so I'll be looking to game at around 1920X1200 (COD4, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Fallout 3 when it comes out, etc etc)

I chose the 750 Psu since I already have 2 cards (wont be looking to add another one down the road and I read that the 750 works fine for the 4850CF)

I chose 2 GB ram instead of 4 since I doubt I will be able to access more than 2.5 -2.75 GB of ram on this current rig.

And I chose the E8400 because this is mostly going to be a gaming rig and I honestly don't see how an E8400 OC'd to around 3.6 Ghz is that much worse than a Q9550 at current games (or the E8500/E86000 for that matter)....

So that's my ticket, please tell me if there's anything you would change =] I'm open to anything that keeps the price under...oh....$2000.

Thanks a lot!

EDIT: Oops, swap out the 780i with the Asus Rampage, silly me....

Awesome CPU, very overclockable, even on air!  But i would make just a few suggestions.

For about $36 more you can have SLI 9800 GTX+ cards which are rated better in SLI mode.  unless you like ATI like i like Nvidia, then stick with what you like.

You could have 4g ram for a little bit more, and get the 64bit OS for only $15 more to use all 4g of ram.

For what you will be running, 750 PSU will run it just fine, and be quiet.  But if you were to eventually upgrade to the more powerful cards, you will prob need a bit more juice.

Also, use 800mhz ram, its gonna be OC'd anyways.  From what ive heard not alot of diff from 800 to 1066.  DST will know for sure, hell post here soon :)

my suggestion: ticket 197808

Oh, if you want it FAST, check out the preconfigured GTO in the specials, its under 2k.  The GTO is pretty fickin sweet for the price, and you get a quad core with a gtx 280.

he specifically said he wanted a dual ATI system, which is why I didn't mention the gto, but lets see what he thinks

Hey, thanks a lot for the quick responses

Thanks about the whole switching to 800MHz RAM idea Mezzeron, I think I read somewhere that 1066 is basically 800 parts but tested to run higher.

I'm just a little bit worried about using a 64-Bit OS because of certain program compatibilities...not sure if that's unfounded or not.  Otherwise ill definitely go that route and 4 GB of RAM.

The only reason I wanted the dual ATI's is because I'm not looking for future upgrade potential with my rig.  I'll probably wait for Sandy Bridge then completely upgrade to the new mobos and DDR3 memory, when all the kinks have been worked out with the new tech.  Also, I'm not sure the performance boost to DDR3 with the current processors is worth it, at least for me.

So I've read that 4850CF beats out the 280GTX on all games except Crysis and is around the level of 9800GTX+ in SLI, plus I get the added benefit of the x48 mobo which allows better overclocking.

So based on that this is the revised ticket : 197848

I mean, this should be enough to run pretty much all games bar Crysis at 1920x1200 on high right?  And ill be pretty much set for the next 3 years while I wait for Intel's tock =]  since I don't see an OC'd Core 2 Duo and 4850CF becoming COMPLETELY obsolete anytime soon (i hope)

and damn am i happy to find DSO, all that time going through those overpriced alienware/other randomcompany's rigs was a PAIN o.o

EDIT: I've read this on a site....
In Vista x64, any driver that is not properly signed will not be able to enter the kernel and will fail to load.

How often does this problem occur, in your experience?

Thanks Mezzeron and DST4ME!

Yes we are all lucky to have found DS, now, don't worry about vista 64bit its not XP 64bit that had lot of problems.

the things about ram speed is that it matters when you OC.

you got a chip that has a multiplier of 9.

your ram at 800MHz has a core speed of 800 ÷ 2 = 400

9 x 400 = 3600, so basically with that ram you are capped at 3.6GHz OC speed.

now lets look at the 1066MHz ram and its cap.

1066 ÷ 2 = 533

9 x 533 = 4797, so basically with that ram you are capped at 4.8GHz OC speed.

now yo are not gonna get up to 4.8 but you can get to 3.8 or 4.0 possibly, with the 800MHz you can't get to 3.8GHz cause you are capped at 3.6GHz.

does that make sense?

yes your gpus are going to be fine for your games.

if vista 64bit gives you the digital signature error, let me know we can disable that and let you install what you like then re-enable it

Wow that's great about the 64bit thing, that'll work.

Yup i understand your explanation =]

Only question I have about the memory is this: I'm overclocking the 800MHz RAM, and I'm only on stage 2 air cooling for the CPU (though effectively stage 3 from what I hear about the HAF).  So the OC potential for the E8400 on my rig shouldn't be more than 3.6-3.8 (since I see that it's OC'd to 4.0GHz on liquid in the pre-configured rigs).

So would my OC'd 800 MHz ram be able to support my config or still bottleneck it since I don't imagine I'm going to go liquid and go for speeds of over 4.0GHz....
Or should i get the 1066 just to be safe?

EDIT: also, would a higher RAM speed affect actual performance? Cos then I guess ill just go with the 1066 then, seems to be the safer bet?

Thanks!

You might want to drop the mouse and keyboard and buy them yourself...the Logitec G15 is a nice keyboard and the G5 or G9 from Logitec are also good mice.  Just something else to think about.

higher ram speed does help performance but its very minimal.

I think you should call DS and ask and see if which ram speed they advise you, for a stage 2 cooling OC.

but you are right, with stage 2 you may not even get that high, but then again at 3.6GHz, you are pushing your ram to its max.

Sounds good, ill probably go for something wireless just to make it a little less cluttered....

EDIT:

I think I found a pretty decent solution - I'll get an E8600 instead.  Its cheaper than upgrading to 1066. With its 10x multiplier and OC'd 800 RAM, I'd be capped at a tad over 4.0 GHz, which should be perfect.  I'll still call though to make sure =]

EDIT EDIT:

Yeah you're right stressing my hardware to the max can't be good at all. I'll swap to 1066 and instead take out the OC option on my RAM (unless it also lowers latency - does it?)

Thanks again man, tons of help.

when you call to order, see what they recommend, since they are the one doing the OC, they can tell you best, which way works well with their process
