Okay so I am replacing my PC (Alienware R7 with a GTX 1080ti) that had the GPU bite the dust. What I want is the most performance I can in 4k on my games. I think I got a good setup picked out and went with the Lumos case as it will be on the right side of my desk so I can see the internals. Anyway I am confused on a few things.
I will mostly use a Alienware 7.1 Gaming Headset (AW510H) for audio. Will I need to get an audio card of would the motherboards built in audio be good enough. With this setup is the power supply sufficient or do I need a larger one? On the liquid cooling I hear colored fluids have issues causing damage to the tubes and internals that clear fluid wont. I also have seen post that clear fluid will somewhat work with any color scheme as it will pick up the light inside and reflect it to a degree. Is this correct? Also for an SSD for the OS should I go with a Samsung 980 Pro or the Firecuda 520 for the OS drive? I know for a second and or third game dedicated drive the 980 would be better but for the OS drive should I just get the 520 though slower its talked about as lasting longer? Should I get a small SSD just for the OS alone? I have a buddy who says I should get a seperate drive just for the OS and nothing else. I wish they had 2TB 980 Pro option. I am thinking for storage go Firecuda 520 then add a 980 pro for a game drive to go with my external WDBLACK D30 2TB I had bought just before the GPU failure which I never got to use :( Budget: 8k Expectations: Gaming 4k Usage: Gaming 4k Special Needs: none Saved Ticket #: [Please Type Here] Specifications: Item 1 --- Digital Storm (Config # 4178490) Chassis Chassis Model: Digital Storm Lumos Core Components Processor: Intel Core i9-12900K (5.2 GHz Turbo) (24-Thread) (16-Core) 3.2 GHz (Alder Lake) Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Hero (Wi-Fi) (Intel Z690 Chipset) (Up to 3x PCI-E) (No SLI) (DDR5) System Memory: 32GB DDR5 5200MHz FURY Beast (BACKORDERED ETA END OF DECEMBER) Power Supply: 850W Digital Storm Performance Series (Modular) (80 Plus Gold) Storage / Connectivity Storage Set 1: 1x SSD M.2 (1TB Samsung 980 PRO) (NVM Express) Storage Set 2: 1x SSD M.2 (1TB Samsung 980 PRO) (NVM Express) HDD Set 2: 1x SSD M.2 (2TB Seagate FireCuda 520) (NVM Express) (Gen4 PCIe) Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics / Multimedia Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce RTX 3090 24GB (VR Ready) (Performance Edition) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Digital Storm Engineering Extreme Cooling: H20: HydroLux PRO: Exotic Custom Cooling System (1x Graphics Card + CPU) HydroLux Tubing Style: HardLine Tubing (Requires HydroLux PRO Custom Liquid Cooling System) HydroLux Fluid Color: Clear Fluid + Clear Tubing (Requires HydroLux Liquid Cooling System) Cable Management: Exotic Cable Management - Black - (Cable Combs with Custom Color Sleeved Extension Cables) Chassis Fans: Cooler Master MasterFan Halo (RGB Fans) (Remote Control Only) Internal Lighting: Remote Controlled Advanced LED Lighting System (Multiple RGB Color Modes) Digital Storm TwisterBoost Technology Boost Processor: Stage 2: Overclock CPU - Up to 5.1GHz on All CPU Cores Boost OS: Yes, Disable and tweak all of the non-crucial services on the operating system Software Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 11 Home (64-Bit) Recovery Tools: USB Drive - Windows Installation (Format and Clean Install) Virus Protection: Windows Defender Antivirus (Built-in to Windows) Edited by Sorata - 20 Nov 2021 at 11:44am |

You should be fine. Asus Maximus Z690 Hero User Manual | ASUS Support (Page 70)
It's doable but I'd highly recommend a 1000W. OuterVision Power Supply Calculator
Intel Core i7-12700K & 12700KF CPU Review, Benchmarks, & Efficiency | Gamers Nexus (YouTube) Overclocking the 12900k is pointless and dangerous! Heat and Voltage testing | JayzTwoCents (YouTube) Everyone should watch this video!
This fluid has been running for TWO YEARS! Did it hold up? | JayzTwoCents (YouTube) I think, clear looks very nice, plus it allows you to change the mood/theme simply by adjusting the LEDs. I couldn't find a good example of a hardline loop Lumos rig, however, the following should give you an idea of how light passes through the tubes. (The animated version is tiny because of the file size restrictions.)
NVMe SSDs are fast. For just the OS, even the Samsung 970 would be totally fine. As to separate drives... The main reason is because very large capacity SSDs are still very expensive. So, you'd have a fair size main drive and the second would be mass storage -- at this point HDDs are so much more cost effective if you don't need/want cutting edge speed. For gaming, running the OS and games from the same NVMe SSD isn't likely to cause any noticeable performance hit. The OS and most other apps (e.g., chat) will not require enough disk access to matter. However, if you intend to do recording/streaming, then separating the OS drive with the OBS software, etc from your game library should be beneficial. With that said... The Samsung drives are cheaper and technically faster than the equivalent Seagate models (i.e., capacity and connection type - PCIe 3 or PCIe 4). As for configuration, for example, you could do a 500GB or 1TB Samsung 980 for Storage Set 1 and perhaps a 2TB Samsung 970 for Storage Set 2 as a mass storage (e.g., games library). Or perhaps a 2TB Firecuda single drive config. Be aware, as you can see, >1TB models decrease in cost value, and can cause straight up sticker shock.
The 3090's sole benefit is double the VRAM. At this point, most games have not surpassed the 8GB of VRAM utilization barrier. So, doubling the VRAM from 12GB to 24GB is completely pointless in the foreseeable future. In other words, you'll be paying 50% more than the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 12GB (VR Ready) but only gaining possibly 5%. Thanks. Great info.
I don't foresee the I9-12900k and denuvo issue being an issue for me. I wont have mine till after december anyway so by then it should be worked out and I dont run a lot of DRM games. I will drop the OC addon. Thanks, that helped me choose the drives and the liquid cooling :) Appreciate the info on the 3090. I am trying to future proof a bit (want this one to last about 5 years) and the one I picked is the only 3090 option that takes liquid cooling :( but i will look some more into that and may take your advice and go with the 3080TI. Right now benching test with a couple of the games I play at 4k shows a 15-20 percent increase in some with the 3090 over 3080TI ie Death Stranding but most games its really close by about 5 frames. Just watched a video saying the 3080ti is a waste vs the 3080 and 3090, confused lol I need to dig more before finalizing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtkk-_0jrPU On the PSu I tried the app you linked to but it doesn't have all the options I needed. I assume if I was to add say 3-4 external USB based HDD storage devices then Ill need more than the 850 watt supply. Since I am choosing Exotic Cable Management I have to go modular right and not semi modular? This leaves me to choose between a 1200 watt modular and 1000 watt semi modular. You sir have been a big help. Thanks. Edited by Sorata - 20 Nov 2021 at 5:54pm |

Thanks. I hope you're enjoying the new rig, and are able to keep the eye condition(s) under control to better enjoy it. Routine eye drops are inconvenient enough, but them plus surgeries...
Thanks. I'm glad it's helpful. On that subject...
OuterVision hasn't updated the calculator with 12th gen. Intel CPUs yet. Even after, you somewhat need to select close enough components, which I typically over-estimate a bit. Nevertheless, it is a tool to keep in mind.
Indeed, try to locate benchmarks of your preferred games. My basis wasn't just on user benchmarks but also tech specs comparison. The 3080 Ti's binned die is only 2.44% less capable than the 3090's full GPU die.
I can't say with absolute certainty, although, considering DS configurator doesn't show any warnings when choosing such a config and the following stock image, the type is moot. I don't know if it's the common method, however, this photo shows the premium cables as extensions to the PSU's originals.
Gamers Nexus is a great source, and they aren't wrong in the recommendation. The issue being is that the distaste is due to the prices (both MSRP and the actual craziness). The RTX 3080 is a good 4K performer. The 3090 is also a bad value for gamers, but like most premiere/top tier products, it's the only go-to to eek out every last drop. Beyond GN's benchmarks, where the 3090 was <20% better in gaming than the 3080 (non-Ti), the price difference is more than twice. Those figures are inline with other tasks, namely, 3D rendering. My RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra scores ~715 in OctaneBench while my RTX 3080 Founders Edition scores ~606, an ~15% difference. The somewhat saving grace for the investment in such a case is 3D rendering utilizes/depends a lot on VRAM. P.S. I happened across this: The ULTIMATE i9 12900k Gaming PC Build! - RTX 3080 Ti, Alder Lake Gameplay Benchmarks | PC Centric (YouTube) (Seems on the nose. ) P.P.S.
Agreed. I'm assuming Intel and Microsoft are scrambling to eliminate that black eye. |

Thanks for that image. I forgot about it totally. Seems Ill be fine with the 1000 watt power supply. Also since all my drives are gonna be M.2 on the motherboard after seeing that image of the two HDDs on the side if my case ends up similar Ill take two drives out of my Alienware and add them Yeah the 3080 and 3090 benchmarks vary so much in certain games but are so close in others its giving me a headache. Really wanna buy once cry once. Once again thanks you helped me sort out everything but me mulling over my final choice of GPU. I have to look at a lot more testing with the various games and programs I have and see overall which does the most the best or at a reasonable margin between them and decide. Again thanks, your awesome. Watching the video now Edited by Sorata - 20 Nov 2021 at 9:22pm |

Well I thought i was done but when I was updating the configuration number I noticed the lighting system had an option I didn't see.
Anyone know the difference in the Remote Controlled Advanced LED Lighting System (Multiple RGB Color Modes) and the Digital Storm LED Lighting System? They are the same price but the digital storm one has no description. |

Here is an article describing the 3080 video card that I just got in my new beast yesterday. Powerful enough to be so close to the 3090 in performance to save a bunch of money.

Bringing back a dead thread but I got a more finalized build after listening to you guys, talking with a support agent yesterday and then seeing the options changed on the config before I could placed my order due to parts being out of stock so the SSD changed and the motherboard changed.
I'm gonna opt out of extra SSds for now and just add them later myself to bring down cost as its easy and cheaper. Since the motherboard changed do you guys see any issue with compatibility the agent didn't see?. And is the Corsair Commander Pro management control board unnecessary with the software from DS or good to add to control all the RGB items? It appears OuterVision updated the calculator with the 12th gen. Core CPUs. However, the default frequency value is oddly the Max Turbo Boost -- not realistic. So, I changed it to what I found to be the stock overclock/boost for all P-Cores. Also, OuterVision's chosen 1.2 V for Vcore is extremely optimistic. I also upped the GPU frequency to a realistic max -- that is, my completely air cooled FTW3 Ultra can hold at 2010 MHz (for the most part). A couple of minor misconfigurations: I didn't realize the rear fan on the Lumos can only be 120 mm. Although, assuming all six fans are 120 mm only saves 3 W. I think, DS includes at least one LED strip, which I didn't include in the Other Devices section -- only ~10 W difference. 1) Adjust as needed. 2) Utilization/Gaming/Rendering/Editing Times are primarily to calculate the estimated annual cost. 3) This is an estimated full load/peak power draw.
Nothing offhand.
I do not believe it will provide any benefit. I don't know what DS uses by default, but with the Cooler Master Halo option, I assume, the setup includes Cooler Master's ARGB LED controller/hub. Edited by MrCheetah - 05 Dec 2021 at 10:03am |

Thanks. I'll get a 1000w PSu. Weird when I go to Outervision it still doesn't display any CPuU options above I9-9960x. Is the link im using old? https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator
The enermax outervision I just found a link to does though. https://enermax.outervision.com/ OK figured it out. I cant search by i9 or intel I have to search by 12900 to get it to display. That's weird. Edited by Sorata - 05 Dec 2021 at 10:50am |

Welp can't freaking help myself I went and bought a set of 24 pin and 3x8 RTX pin Lian Li strimmer plus ARGB cables. Found them on sale so if I am gonna add these myself should I get the Corsair Commander Pro management control board or would this be unneeded with what the Lian li comes with?
Now of they just would add an RGB DDR5 ram option...... guess Ill have to swap those out in about a year. Edited by Sorata - 05 Dec 2021 at 6:13pm |

If not guess I'll buy a set of those too to replace the ones they put on down the line like the ram. Shouldn't be too hard if I am follow youtube videos right. Sorata,
Thank you for your service as a police officer! I respect folks that feel public service is a part of being a good citizen. I am a 6 year Army Vet and when I got out spent 5 years working as a volunteer cave rescue EMT and doing general search & rescue. Body recovery was also involved but at least there was comfort to the families in those cases too. I know you will really be impressed with your new Digital Storm when it arrives. I just got my new beast about 2 weeks ago replacing a 12 year old Digital Storm system that still games great. The only maintenance was replacing an air cooled CPU fan within a cooling radiator. Pretty nice to have only that as an issue over 12 years. Which ever configuration you decide on you will be getting the best custom built computer available! Little ticked off at the moment. After having talked to Digital Storm twice and then placing my order. I was just told after paying for my order that the parts are not compatible.
I have already bought upgrade parts and accessories to match to and will have to relook at everything. I was told the ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Extreme does not fit in the Lumos case. I can either have to switch to a velox case which I hate and has the glass on the wrong side for my desk setup or downgrade severely the mother board to a ASUS ROG Strix Z690-A Gaming D4 (DDR4) which I cant do as Its DDR4 and I have already bought DDR5 ram, or wait another month on a ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Hero DDR5 board which wont be in to March..... Needless to say after having spent a lot, waited for parts to be instock to order and talked to support to be sure things would be compatible I am not happy but will probably be forced to the velox. |

Anyone have pics of the Velox with hardlines?
I can not stand the pics on the main site of the velox if thats how its gonna look and have no clue what my system would look like with hardlines or if the RGB fans I wanted will be visible. All I can find online is pics of a 2016/17 or earlier velox cases with huge open areas with no liquid cooling and the one hardline pic is blurry and only straight on from the side. Needless to say 9k+ spent to find out something support should have caught already when I asked them if that all worked wont doesn't make me feel to good. I will also have to get a different table setup so that the glass will be visible to me as it will now be on the wrong side. I'll have to live with it regardless as I cant keep waiting as I also need the PC for work as some of our PCs cant do what I need for investigative work with video footage and my old system wont cut it with no graphic card. I'll just have to force myself to like the case. Edited by Sorata - 31 Jan 2022 at 6:46pm |

Sorata,
Here is the Velox I recently got. The first picture is with the glass panel off & turned off. The 2nd is turned on with the smoked glass on. I do not have hard line but have AIO cooling. The only RGB fans I have are the two on the AIO radiator. They are pretty and in synch with the cabinet LEDs. Hope someone with Hardline in Velox can post a picture for you. |

Thank you for posting those. I appreciate it. Found the only pics of a hardline on the main site and you cant see the fans or anything from the front. Ill have to rig something up to cover up those horrible case bays and large empty space at the bottom. Ill just have to trust them to make it look good hopefully so I can live with the case. Sorata,
The entire front of the Velox-X is mesh just like the top. Any RGB fans attached directly to the cabinet on top, front, or back for that matter would be seen from the outside. My two RGB fans are on the inside behind the AIO radiator and are not visible from the front. But they are clearly visible when I look at the case from the side. I apologize for the poor pictures. I had my grandkid take them when I got the computer. I bet he still did better than I would have. I wish I could have showed you how beautiful the lighted effects look through the smoked glass side. It makes taking a picture difficult but the actual lighting looks nice & relaxing through the smoked glass especially with the black interior of the Velox-X. I am a 12 year customer of Digital Storm & having just upgraded to a new one a few months ago my experience with Digital Storm has been EXCELLENT. It is unfortunate that the configuration you ordered and associated requested verification didn't happen at order time. I can assure you that Digital Storm will make it right based upon my own experience and those I have followed in the forum over a decade. Soon, you will be getting your monster of a system except it just might not look like what you first expected. |

Thanks, your grandkid did a good job it showed that pretty much the design has changed little from the site pictures. The pics on the site show no fans showing through at all other than the rear hence my confusion. Is all the glass smoked or was that an option you picked? I see no options on glass at all and hope it isn't smoked as I was trying to add Lian li strimmers and that would make them hard to see. I'll try to trust them that it will look good and I'll be happy in the end just for 9k not counting the other 5k (64GB of DDR5 Corsair Dominator 6200 Ram, Two Sony 980 Pro M2 drives, the strimmers and a ASUS ROG Swift PG32UQX etc) in stuff I have awaiting it is making me nervous, its a huge investment. This took me a long time to get the cash for and isn't something I'll likely every be able to do to this scale anytime soon other than upgrading maybe the graphic card. I had to do 16k in no choice overtime by shear luck from the covid crisis to pay for it, being a cop sucks when there are so few of us left. Hope they fix the configurator so the option for the extreme is removed from the Lumos so it wont get someone else. Again thank you your response is making me feel more at ease. I'm still waiting on my Aventum but I have the PG32UQX also. I have it plugged up to my laptop atm just to test it out and make sure I don't have any dead Pixels. I love this monitor and can't wait to play in 4k with it. |

Sorata,
The plate glass is HEAVY & smoked. I will admit that I try to be careful around it but the glass is THICK. I was not aware of an option if one was available regarding smoked glass. You have some serious money invested in your new system. I wouldn't hesitate to mention that when speaking with Digital Storm Staff. Obviously, I am not the only one following your Digital Storm journey. Hopefully, soon your experience will also end up positive and this thread will be a reminder of that path. |

Sorata, I noticed you mention changing gpu in the future and you also ordered the hardline option on the cooling. Chances that the future gpu will have the cooling ports in exactly the same place are pretty close to -0-. You will have to remove the hardline to the gpu and make a new one. Not impossible, of course, but it increases the difficulty of the r&r a lot. Just saying. Soft tubing is a pleasure to work with but I do realize the bling factor of the hardline or copper tubing! Enjoy. Edited by hoserator - 01 Feb 2022 at 12:53am |

So the glass is smoked color by default? Great defeats the whole purpose of the glass. Yeah its a lot of money to be forced with a case that now is even less attractive for me and I have to call them today to pay another $174 for the Velox case bringing it up to $9244 before adding the tax increase on the velox. I emailed John back to ask if its possible to let me know why it wont fit as I thought the Extreme and Hero where the same size etc and they say the Hero fits, I told them if it was just due to the different front I/O panel then I don't need to use all of those only the rear. Would rather give those up then go Velox now that I know about the glass. The Extreme has some LCD panels I am concerned wont be visible or readable though smoked glass. The glass shown on Digital Storms Velox page appears clear but pics I have seen now from the forum it is much darker, don't know if this is lighting or not in the photos. EDIT: John emailed me back and confirmed that though smoked I should be able to see the RGB and LCd screens fine. Edited by Sorata - 02 Feb 2022 at 2:54pm |

Ok after a friend pointed it out I may have found another issue with the build that Digital Storm missed.
The velox case is going to be an issue as the Motherboard is oriented upside down from normal. Thus making the on screen displays of my motherboard or even the downgraded hero motherboard they suggested useless. Thus I settled for the velox case at their suggestion and shelled out 187 dollars more for nothing Does the LCDs reconfigure for being upside down? Why are they listing motherboards in builds on the configurators that they are not compatible with. Ill reach out to them for a response. Seems I cant catch a break and might as well just give up. EDIT: Looking at it I can either just swallow the pill stick with my Extreme MB and take the case I don't want and not be able to use the motherboards OLED screens as its all upside down OR downgrade to the Hero losing several ports, features, the OLED and the DIMM.2 and ROG Fan controller, downgrade one of the the PCIE 4.0 M2 bays I was gonna use to 3.0 lowering teh speed of my Samsung 980 PRO and then re add the Corsair Pro Node Controller and add a month + wait due to backordered parts. Starting to think I may as well buy my own case and just take everything out of the DS and move it to my that case and redo the tubing as I cant find these parts separately due to shortages. EDIT2: Now i am very confused. While looking for alternatives I have been told by corsair that my choice of board which is an extended ATX with a size of 30.5cm x 27.7cm vs the Heros 30.5cm x 24.4cm should fit their Corsair Crystal Series 570X case.... which is the LUMOS case. In chat now. Apparently they didn't know it has a center OLED on the extreme which now wont be readable or usable in that orientation
They are unaware as well that Corsair says the MB fits the Lumos, the tech said that as far as he knows they have not test fit it to the Lumos and they only ever tried to test fit a EATX awhile back and that one didn't fit so it is possible the Lumos can use it or may still not. He suggested I reach out to John for help but for now Ill just have to deal with an unusable OLED. Edited by Sorata - 02 Feb 2022 at 5:12pm |
