Hey Guys,

I am basically a newbie when it comes to overclocking. I have found this forum to be very informative.

I need help in overclocking my I7 950 to 4.2 GHz and keeping it stable. I am currently OC at 4.025 GHz with following bios settings. BTW, I have head alot of great things about this Justin on on this forum, hopefully Justin the Guru can help me out. Also, would I need to do any memory timing? At 4.025 GHz and running Prime95 for almost 5 hrs at the blend setting, my temperatures at 81, 77,77,78 using Real Temp. Are those temperatures acceptable for a stress test? Seems kinda high to me and this is with Hyperthreading disabled in the Bios setting.

Current setup:
I7 950, step5, DO
P6T Deluxe V2
Crucial 12 GB - DDR3 PC3-8500 (1066MHz)
XFX 4870X2 in Crossfire mode
Corsair H50 water cooling

Current Bios setting:
A.I. Tweaker Menu
Manual
Multiplier: 23
Speedstep: Disabled
BCLK: 175
PCIE: 100
DRAM: Auto
UCLK: Auto
QPI Link Data Rate: Auto
VCORE: 1.28
DRAm Bus Voltage: 1.66

Everything else on Auto
Load Line Calibration: Enabled
CPU Spread Spectrum: Disabled
PCIE Spread Spectrum: Disabled

CAS# Latency: 7
RAS# to CAS# Delay: 7
RAS# Precharge: 7
Cycle Time: 20

Advanced Menu:
CPU Ratio 23
C1E Disabled
Hardware Prefetcher Enabled
Adjacent Cache Line Prefetch Enabled
Intel Virtualization Tech Disabled
CPU TM Function Disabled
Execute Disable Bit Enabled
Hyperthreading Enabled
Active Processor Cores All
A20M Disabled
SpeedStep Disabled
C State Tech Disabled

Thanks in advance!

Someone else can help you fine tune more, but I found this post by Venom from DS to be very helpful for general troubleshooting once you start. It let me get Lilim to 4.2GHz 24-hour Prime95 stable with little effort. If you get any other Bluescreen codes not listed here or just want more information on any specific BIOS setting you can Google them.

To start, set your RAM divider to 2:8 1066MHz, timings to the ram's rated spec, and increase bclock by 10MHz and test it each time you increase with LinX until you reach about 170, then start increasing by 5MHz. When you are at 190, increase by 2-3 each time.

Start with 1.3000v cpu vcore, and +100mv cpu vtt.  Set your dimm voltage to what your ram is rated for.

Bluesceen codes:
0x00000101 - increase vcore
0x00000124 - increase vtt or vcore (you will have to test each one)
0x0000009c - increase vcore
0x0000000A - raise/lower vtt or dimm
0x00000050 - raise/lower dimm (usually, can also be vtt related)

justin.kerr is a much better overclocker than I am, so I am sure he can help you further.

Lilim
Intel Core i7 920 @4.2GHz
HAF 932 - Dual SLI Nvidia GTX 480s
3x Intel X25-M G2 (80GB) SSD RAID0

2 issues.

1. you say HT is off but it says enabled on your BIOS template.
2. your temps will not let you overclock really any more..

Sorry about that.  Yes, the HT feature is disabled.  I am thinking of switching over to the Thermaltake Level 10 case and using a push/pull configuration on my H50 and applying Artic Silver 5.  Do you think this will improve the airflow.  Also, what is the optimum temperature to stay at when running Prime95 at 100% load,

Thanks

you can push/pull your setup now, make sure that cool ambient air is being pulled through the radiator, not hot case air blowing through it.
artic silver 5 is not going to get you any better temps, maybe one of the better TIM's will, if you get a great mount, but it is possible to get worse temps, if you don't get a good mount.
the optimum temp for running prime95?  -250C Ouch  max should be 85C  or so.. remember every 10C drop in temps double the life of the components..
why disbale HT?? you running XP?

I disabled HT to decrease the temperature.  I am using the TIM that came with the H50.  Wouldn't AS5 help out?  What TIM would you recommend.  I am also planning on using the Triebwerk fan on my push/pull configuration.  Here are my new settings with HT enabled @ 4.000 GHz.  Any recommendation on adjusting the settings to get my temperature lower?  I just want to be stable at 4.00GHz with reasonable temperatures to run the stress test.

Idle temp - 56, 54. 55. 55
Prime95 Full Load - 89, 85, 84 84

New Bios Setting:

A.I. Tweaker Menu
Manual
Multiplier: 20
Speedstep: Disabled
BCLK: 200
PCIE: 105
DRAM Frequency: DDR3-1603 MHz
UCLK: Auto
QPI Link Data Rate: Auto
VCORE: 1.35
QPI/DRAM core voltage: 1.35
DRAM Bus Voltage: 1.64

Everything else on Auto
Load Line Calibration: Enabled
CPM Differential Amplitude: 1000mV
CPU Spread Spectrum: Disabled
PCIE Spread Spectrum: Disabled

DRAM Timing control: Auto

Advanced Menu:
CPU Ratio Auto
C1E Disabled
Hardware Prefetcher Enabled
Adjacent Cache Line Prefetch Enabled
Intel Virtualization Tech Disabled
CPU TM Function Disabled
Execute Disable Bit Enabled
Hyperthreading Enabled
Active Processor Cores All
A20M Disabled
SpeedStep Disabled
C State Tech Disabled
