Topic: Need help with optimizing build Posted: 21 Apr 2010 at 3:26am |
The specification I'm thinking about getting is below. I have a 24 inch monitor so the games will be in 1920x1080. I'm looking for something that will last me for about 3 years before I give this system away and buy something new so I won't be doing any upgrade to this system. Any suggestions is appreciated. The biggest question I have is what overclock CPU number should I be expecting? I see people with 3.3GHz OC and I would like to avoid such a low number if at all possible.

oc is luck of the draw but most people are between 3.5 and 3.9.
I would drop the veloci and go with an ssd. instead of 2 x 5850 go with 1 x 5870 or 1 x 480. go with win7 pro. the rest looks good. |

Thanks DST4ME. One thing I'm curious about, can you let me know the reason for the Win7 Pro recommendation?

Well I would advise you to be patient, these are not dell and hp pcs, so let DS take their time building it so that everything is perfect, if you are in a hurry now and you hit a snag, then you will go nuts

I'll use the time off to go pray to the CPU God to give me a good chip that hits 3.9GHz

Awesome. Put in the order on 4/21. The computer shipped today and is scheduled to arrive 29. I was initially concerned about the OC since the i7 920 DST computer my brother got at the end of last year only got an OC of 3.3GHz with the Noctua Dual 120mm cooler. I got the i7 930 with the Noctua NH-D14. It looks like the law of average took effect in my family.
I knew he was up there so I closed my eyes, whispered a prayer, and he answered me with a 3.9GHz OC. Thank you Superman Overclocked Processor Settings Processor Speed GHz: 3.9 CPU Multiplier: 21 Voltage CPU VCore: 1.35 VDroop Control: Yes i7 - BCLK MHz: 189 i7 - Voltage QPI\DRAM: i7 - Voltage QPI\PLL: i7 - Voltage CPU VTT: 150 i7 - Voltage IOH Vcore: i7 - Voltage ICH Vcore: i7 - Voltage IOH/ICH I/O: i7 - PWM Frequency: 780i/790i - Memory Clock Mode: 780i/790i - CPU FSB MHz: 780i/790i - Voltage FSB: 780i/790i - Voltage SPP: 780i/790i - Voltage MCP: Motherboard BIOS: S851 Video Card Driver: 10.3 Chipset Driver: CD Sound Card Driver: CD |

The OC info should come in the Stage 7 email. Best of luck with your OC result. I think we have almost the exact same build.

well actually 920s are suppose to oc better then 930 from what justin says, but your brother can always post his settings in the "Performance/Overclocking " section or call DS and see if they can raise his oc, I'm sure justin can get him to 3.6, the Noctua D14 and 12 can both give you 4.0GHz most times if you know what you are doing.
in short don't compare to eachother, chips don't work that way, temps and oc and vcore are gonna be some what different, and there is not a big difference between 3.7GHz and 3.9GHz in gaming, and most tasks, so don't be bummed out if you get a 3.6GHz or 3.7 or 3.8GHz oc, at the end of the day you are running faster then a 975 at a fraction of the cost. |

No worries. I was tempted to boost my brother's OC but he doesn't really do anything hardcore that needs the extra horse power anyway. I can do a lot of these things myself but I am willing to admit I don't have the patience to build a clean computer or do an optimal OC job. Some people like to cook their meals and eat it. Even though I know how to cook, I prefer to just pay someone else to cook and I'll enjoy the food instead.

I'm with you tho if things go the way I'm being told, then it might have been better if I build this pc myself.

Got a build very similar to both you guys, and I am really happy with my OC, since I didn't expect the 930 to do that well. Mine arrives tomorrow!

How are you able to get the time of delivery? All I can see from the FedEx website is it will arrive tomorrow but I can't locate the time range to get home from work and get it.
