Hello everyone, it's been a long time, I hope everyone is still doing great.
Well I thought I would upgrade my ram from 2gig to 4 gig. My computer specs are on my Sig. Well I bought the same ram as I bought when i first built the machine. Dominator 1066 PC2-8500 Now I ran into boot up problem when i installed them. I first put the new rams in the 2 open slots and turned it on. the computer made long beep and had a code of 52 or 53. not sure what that all means. So I turned it off and took them out and turned on the puter with the old rams. IT worked.. booted great. So then i took out all the ram and put in the 2 new ram i just bought int the slots where the old ram was. IT booted, but I noticed that during boot, it only showed 1 stick of ram. not the 2. I know this because of the low number of ram it showed. So then I put back the old ram in the correct slots and booted up just fine. SOOooo... whats the problem? I did notice that on the ram itself, has a bunch of numbers...all that matched with the old rams but the new ram is version 5 . the old ram is version 4.1 Would that make a difference? Also if its only showing 1 stick of ram, do you thing one is bad? I'm talking about the new ram. Now i know you might be saying test the ram with memfest.. but i dont have floppy drive so I don't think i can test the rams. Any help would be nice. |

not sure, didnt try, but are you not supposed to put the only 2 stick of ram in the other slots? I mean on my MB the 750i (there are 2 blue color clots.. this is where the 2 old ones are now) and there are 2 black slots.. this is where no ram is at right now.
would it still boot? |

ya it will work, you are suppose to use either the blue or black for 2 dimm, so try the old ram in the black slots and see if it boots up.

Well that worked. I put both in the black slots.. Now what does that mean? One of the new ones is bad?
Now you should be able to just put the ram in... boot the computer up... and be good to go right?? So it looks like I need to return the ram i just bought. .. |

Ok so you got one stick that won't even boot, so that needs to be rma, now run memtest on the second stick and see it shows any erros, run it for like 4 hours.
what is the speed settings for your old ram in the bios? |

in the bios it reads 1067... pretty much 1066.
Now should i put one of the new sticks of ram in at a time and test that plus the old sticks? So ill have a total of 3 sticks at a time and test all 3? see i dont know which one is bad (of the new sticks of ram) Edited by brian - 18 Jul 2009 at 7:43am |

he already tried that, and one of them did not register, they also won't boot with 4 of them, all 4 slots work with the old ram, so obviously his ram is not fine.

OK , so will the computer boot with 1 stick in the first slot? If so then Mason, I can try that... but dst4me correct... both old older tams worked in all 4 slots. It's not big deal to return the rams and get another one. Hopefully, I'm dealing with a japanese company and the lingo barier is always fun. :)

well I tried what mason was talking about. I put each one of the new stick into the first blue slot and booted. The first one didn't boot, but the second one did. So now I know which stick is the bad one. But it doesn't help me that i know, I still need to return it. Thanks for the help. Now I know how to check ram.

just because the system boots does not mean that ram has no errors, plenty of systems boot but the ram still has error, run memtest on the other new one that booted just to be safe, you don't want to send one back now and then have to send the other back later.
