I've convinced myself the reason of noise in my comp is probably because of my CPU's stock air cooler, since quieting down everything except that doesn't shut it up xD. Anyways, I'm looking around for vendors to construct my own LC system, I can't send it back to DS because I don't have a backup system. I've no clue how exactly to make one however, heh.
Preferably, I'd like to cool a CPU and two vid cards, though I can probably just make due with a CPU cooler. CPU's a i7 920, graphics are dual 9600 GTs. I've considered Asetek's system, which I found this ![]() (can you seriously daisy chain multiple Asetek cooling plates to a single radiator? I've only seen people use a single radiator/cpu cooler combo, never multiple ones) Anyways, I've heard a lot of backlash against Asetek coolers about it not really being a true LC solution, so I'm just gonna try to construct one of the conventional ones. Mainly, I need to ask, what are the components you need to build a nice, reliable LC system? Any vendor suggestions? (Also, some overclocking tips would be nice....since I'll be able to boost up my overclock. i7 920 currently runs at 3.33 Ghz using the stock cooler) Edited by ablahblah - 14 Apr 2010 at 10:56pm |

Oh, one more thing, installing a LC system means installing a rad to the back of my system right? Sooo, I'd have to take off that nice backplate to my raven? (I know how to do it, yes)

You prolly looking at $250 at least for legit H2O. http://www.crazypc.com/products/cooling/watercooling.htm. I know next to nothing about it but have read those pc kits are ok.
I can tell you from experience that the asetek/corsair h50 isn't that much of an upgrade over stock cooling to make it worth it and i wouldn't use them to cool gpu's. My temps went down 7*C with a noctua NH-12UP SE2 when i upgraded from the asetek and is quiet. Almost everyone else will tell you the same thing about the asetek on this forum. I don't dislike it as much as other members but they have good reason for their feelings.

EDIT 2: Sorry. I missed the bottom part of your post where you came to same conclusion about the asetek lol. But those are some assembled H2O kits. Maybe someone with more knowledge of parts and whats needed will chime in about those kits assembled on crazy pc. I was looking at them myself for when I rebuild my DS pc.

Hmm, thanks for the link on water cooling 101. I've always wondered though, when "UV Lighting" is mentioned, is it seriously outputting UV radiation? Like, as in, if you're dumb enough to spend enough time near the light, you'll get skin cancer or something?
And I remember that to cool dual graphics cards you have to arrange the tubing for them in a special way, what exactly is that? EDIT : Wow all these options are overwhelming, can someone just, like, build me a set of links of part recomendations so I can start somewhere... xD I've dual 9600 GTs and a i7 920 (obviously, LG1336 socket) EDIT (Again) : Annd...how do you make a quick disconnect system.... EDIT #3 : Umm, since my case has my mobo rotated in such a way that the card's are oriented vertically, am I still gonna need to do any sort of special hold-downs for it, or, is it convieniently in an orientation where there's no possibility of my mobo warping in shape? if you are doing this just for quietness..... seems pretty crazy. lol
the graphics cards, I would sell them and get one decent card.. will be a lot better way to go.. Investing more money into those cards does not make any sense to me.. but to each his own.
any time you see ThermalTake and water cooling run... lol
a 240 mm radiator and an i7 plus 2 graphics cards is way to small.
never use pre-made coolants, they are all junk, have poor performance, and will clog up the water blocks.
artic silver 5 is a poor TIM, MX-2 is a lot better, and easier to use.
radiator, could not have picked a worse one for those fans..
looking at a lot of money on that list, and that would be a very poor performing water cooling setup, honestly better to get the Asetek.
If you want to get into water cooling, I can help, but to do things right, it will take time, cost a lot of cash, and not improve your performance much..

my current cooling "setup"
i7 - Stock 9600 GTs - Stock Case - Vertically Mounted PCI Cards w/180mm fans it's somehow been enough to amp up the i7 from 2.66 to 3.2. stock cooler's noise level has been bugging me for awhile, i've sourced it too. yep, i've been looking at a single graphic card option for a long time now, just haven't had the right circumstances to get it. looking online, GTX285's run for 440 or so, and wait, why are the GTX470's cheaper than that by 50.... so for coolants, just use distilled water like everyone says? the fans, eh, i just put them in there because they were low dBa. i really had no clue what to look for.... EDIT: Wtf was i doing there. 14.3 CFM fans for rads ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I updated the list, fans are now 69 CFM's with low dBa still, updated to MX-3 compound, and killed the GPU stuff. And replaced the tubing with UV reactive stuff. Hell, I can just use distilled water, I can get it free or cheap because my mom happens to work in the medical industry. distilled water, but you need a biocide to kill the nastiesl, I use a chunk of silver, you can use PT nuke, or several others.

i've heard better things about 3/8's tubing, and I can only find that specific swiftech pump on frozencpu. I'm limiting it to one website because I don't wanna go handing out credit card info to 15 different sites and having to call in numerous RMA's later on if I need to.
The extra reducer was just in case it ships with a missing reducer. Someone has reported this in the comments. what's the deal with Thermaltake anyways? Marcus. That's the Raven 2. Easily possible with that case. I have the original raven. This baby. ![]() In my opinion, looks a lot better aesthetically than the Raven 2, and also has support for E-ATX. I would just go 1/2" but, do what you want.
Gary, the owner of http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/ is great to deal with, and very good about problems/returns. might check out his site.
Thermaltake has screwed over a lot of water cooling people, for one, two they use a lot of aluminum. You can't have one drop of aluminum in a water loop, if you use copper water blocks.. like all water blocks are....Unless you run a coolant that will slow Galvanic corrosion.

Though the case is steel, many of silverstone's add-on components are aluminum made, which is their tradition. Is that bad?

aluminum just messes up and corrodes everything, right....
oh and, where the heck would i exactly mount the pump. nicely, velcro or zip tie i'd rather not do, but I could if really necessary. also, is there any advantage or point to having a chipset LC'd? hey, i just noticed something. liquid cooling doesn't really have ANY form of cooling at all, it's just really a heat exchange system, right? matters the pump, the DDC 3.25 with the XSPC res top like the one I showed you in the pic is a great performer. all pumps need to be mounted in a way that stop the vibration from resonating through the case, so rubber, or good velrco.. The pump come with mounting screws, or a sticky, thick pad.
Mixing metals like copper and aluminum, will cause corrosion, that will eat away the parts.
a triple radiator would be a good idea, and more flow= lower temps.. to a point, most setups won't see much temp reduction once you get past 1.5 Gal per min, here is a recent water block test. should explain better what I am saying.

liquid cooling the chipset, is mostly for looks, all of my classifieds have chipset blocks, because the VRM run so hot that I ran into stability problems when overclocking, so I first added fans to the stock cooler, which worked fine, but was loud, and looked like crap, so went full coverage water block.
Liquid cooling is just air/water exchanger.

so the pumping speed doesn't really matter if you're over 1.5 gallons per minute/90 gallons per hour? that's good to know...
for graphics cooling, i've read that instead of going from CPU to Graphics, you can just hook up a T connector before the CPU and have coolant direct to both simultaneously. is that seriously a good idea?.... |

1.5 GPM is harder to get that you might think. lol I can calc out your flow rate, and on the first one you figured It would be no where near 1.5 GPM, maybe half that.. lol
the T connector before the GPU, remember, that water will take the path of least resistance, and the CPU water block will be the most restrictive, so it won't get crap for flow, raising temps throught the roof. You can do a T and run multiple water block, and it will work, if the flow restriction is the same on each block after the T.

ohhh, so basically, running everything in series is the safe way to do things, if the two circuits connected to the T differentiate in flow resistance, one or the other won't get the right flow... by the way, happen to know the normal operating temp for a GTX470...? i might upgrade to a solo GTX470 in the future, it's better than both my cards combined... that swiftech setup is ok, but very expensive.. $50 rad, and $50 pump for $200. lol
I can calculate flow if you give me all of the parts.
GTX 470, yeah that is like 5-6 of your cards now?
dual loop means 2 separate loops, so 2 pumps, two reservoirs, ect.. one loop for CPU, one loop for GPU.. make sense?
distilled water is non-conductive.
but all pre-mix coolants, and distilled water, over time become conductive.

it's also a reservoir, all in one LC combo, but then again, I'm not liking 29 dBa on the pump (which is obviously going to be exterior mounted and spread noise out easier). i thought LC was supposed to make your computer QUIETER....
hey wait, I just had an idea.... I have two 120mm fans already mounted on my system (one on the side currently functioning as intake, one on top functioning as outtake) and two 180mm fans mounted at the bottom. 180mms are supposedly intaking air from the bottom of the case, and dragging it to the PSU and HDD, the 180mm over the PSU then blowing air to the main cavity. Would it be realistic to swap both my 120mm fans to outtakes, then run a dual loop system and strap small, single radiators to those fans instead of having one large exterior radiator?
