Hey guys,
I was wondering if you guys had any laymens info on the new ATI GPU. I think its called the 770x2 or something like that. From what I understood of the article I read about it, it has the equivilant of two cards built onto one board. Is it worth the 600 bucks to get, or am I all set for gaming with 2x 8800GT? Thanks all, Matt |

Unless you are gaming at resolutions of 2560x1600 (30" monitor) you will not see the true potential of that card. It is really nice, and it's insanely powerful.... under the right conditions. If you will be gaming on a 22" monitor or smaller, those 8800GT's will do a very good job of tackling virtually anything you could throw at them. They should perform adequately up to a 24" monitor. For the price they are at right now, they are a steal in terms of value for the dollar as well. I would not discourage anyone from buying a Radeon HD4870x2 if that is what they had their heart set on, but without a very large monitor to support, you just won't see huge gains from that card. The performance will be stellar, but cheaper solutions will do just as well until you hit extreme resolutions.

Thanks Harley, I definetly will. I can't see myself playing on a huge moniter. Unless I hook up my HDTV to my computer lol. But I dont think that counts as a moniter. I dunno.
Thanks guys |

I saw it, thanks man. You are awesome. Do TVs really count as moniters?...Well I suppose they would, being the primary display, if I set it up that way, but I bet the lag would be terrible.. Probably best to just get a little 22incher with 2ms and call it a day.

I might try that out then. Just to see how much lag ther is on it. That would be awesome. 32' moniter.

Just to throw in my 2 cents to stir up the pot... while Tyler is correct and very knowledgeable, I have an opinion about the "non-performance" aspect of vid cards. In general, ATI cards have been better at capturing color resolution and vividness. While these aren't directly performance related and technically subjective measurements, they can affect the overall appearance. If you do consider ATI though, a single HD4870 especially on an ATI chipset board would do better. (That is to say, it's not overkill like an HD4870x2 would be!) 2x8800GTs though are pretty awesome for 1680x1050 res.

Thanks Widdle. I also had a question for you. I am not sure if there is already a thread for this, but since you already posted here, I was hoping you could recommend a decent 5.1 speaker system that won't kill my wallet for my new computer. I am going to be using my comp primarily for game, but I will also be watching movies on there from time to time.
Any suggestions are welcome, Thanks You Matt |

I noticed in looking at the build sliders that Digital Storm is listing as its HD4870x2 option a 1 GB card. I do not believe that any such card is actually on the market; all of the ones I have seen are 2GB. It looks to me like the firm ordinarily uses Visiontek for its ATI cards. Visiontek does not show an HD487X2 on its site as an offered product as of yesterday. Does anyone have any idea what card Digital Storm is using?

It's probably a typo. This happens from time to time with new items when they are added to the configuration page. I believe DSO uses primariliy Visiontek and Sapphire products, but I am not 100% certain of that. Maybe Alex or Kelly, or someone else from DSO can post and address the question of which ATI partner is favored for builds.

In regards to surround sound systems, I can't make any decent recommendations other than to go listen to some. I used to review high end components when home theater was new and most surround sound was awful back then. I did some basic reviews, but I didn't like the "effect" of surround sound nor did I like the fact that you were pinned into one location for the effect to be realistic. I still feel it's more hype for movies than anything else. Surround sound for first person shooters is another story. Since I don't play those, I haven't looked at 5.1 or 7.1 etc. I will point out that it will always be far cheaper and easier to get the best quality sound from headphones rather than speakers and there are some surround headphones on the market. Razer has a special headset that actually is designed specifically for their barracuda card.
