Hello,
This will be my second DS rig and I was very impressed with the last build which I created with the help of all of you. I'm considering this build(see below) but I am open to changing any component or even changing the model (Hailstorm?). Unfortunately, I am a plug and play individual and have very little hard computer knowledge other than what I can glean from reading the forums. In the past I would simply go down the list and pick the most expensive components and end up with a computer the price of a small car and so advanced that the current games couldn't even use the tech. So I came here asking you guys to save me from myself... With respect to the hard drives I was considering 2x120gb in raid 0 (is that even still a thing?) and just running my OS from them and then running all games off of the second drive. I don't plan on saving any pictures or videos on the computer as it will be strictly for gaming. Thank you in advance Budget: give or take $5000.00 w/out display Expectations: 2 monitors @ 144, ability to handle VR Usage: I play Eve Online, World of Warships and plan to play Eve Valkyrie (VR game) Special Needs: I want to get at least 3 years out of the rig before I have to upgrade Saved Ticket #: 1359501 Specifications: Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Digital Storm Apollo (Black) Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 5820K 3.3GHz (Six-Core) (Unlocked CPU) Motherboard: ASUS X99-A USB 3.1 (Intel X99 Chipset) (Up to 4x PCI-E Devices) System Memory: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series Power Supply: 1000W Corsair HX1000i (Digitally Controlled Power) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Optical Drive: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Storage Set 1: 2x SSD (120GB Samsung 850 EVO) Storage Set 2: 1x SSD (1TB Samsung 850 PRO) Storage Set 3: - No Thanks RAID Config: RAID 0: Striping: Performance, But No Data Fault Tolerance Protection (Requires 2 Similar HDDs) RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4GB (ASUS Strix Edition) (VR Ready) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio HPC Processor: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Corsair H110i GT - 280mm Radiator Liquid CPU Cooler (Extreme Performance) H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Chassis Fans: Corsair LED Airflow Performance Edition (Blue) (Up to 6 Fans) Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Blue) Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock CPU - Up to 4.4GHz (Depends on Cooling and Motherboard) Boost Graphics Card(s): - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows CD) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Portable Gaming: - No Thanks Branded Gear: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) |

Hey how's it going,
I just ordered my rig. It came in at just over $5k with shipping. Just understand if you go with the Hailstorm II the current free shipping doesn't apply since it has to be shipped freight. This is what I went with -Saved Ticket #: 1358176 |

Hi here2learn,
You only mentioned gaming but you chose a 5820 CPU. If your main use is gaming and internet then you don't need the 5820. I put together a gaming system for you to consider. I would forget the RAID 120 Evos and go with the newer M2 950 SSD. A 250Gb will give you more room for OS and primary games. A 512 M2 950 would be even a better choice. Gave you two 980ti GPUs. The 980ti is a better choice over the 980. Good choice on the Black Apollo. You might want to increase the Warranty. It is different than when you bought your first computer from DS. The parts replacement is less now. Just make sure you understand what warranty you are getting so there are no surprises. Thanks guys! I will take a look at those configurations.
Quick question: in general do most people upgrade or just buy a new rig as it ages out. In the past I simply bought a new rig but it seems that if you were to put a complete liquid cooling system and all of the lights that you have a personalized little work of art as opposed to it being just a computer. I might be interested in making a rig with all of the bells and whistles but it seems a shame to dumpster it after a couple of years... What do you all do? |

You can usually get another couple or three years out of a rig by just replacing the video card. The CPU, mobo, psu etc can usually handle a couple of updates like just a new card.
Old rule.... CPU/mobo good for 5 years Video card good for 3 years I update the video card at least once before worrying if the CPU can handle the latest. |

Here are my thoughts on getting a rig, and keeping it for several years:
• Pretty much everything in the computer will stay the same for years and be just fine. The only thing you will likely need to upgrade is the video cards. • With that in mind, don't skimp on the initial build. You want a good case, cooling system, motherboard, power supply, memory, and hard drives that will last you for a long time. Those are the items that you probably won't upgrade, so get a little more than you need. When in doubt, go a little overboard. • Upgrade the video cards every 2 or 3 years, or as needed. These are easy to upgrade, and your computer will likely play all of the modern games just fine if you have the latest video cards. I did this with my first DS machine back in 2008. That machine lasted me 7 years, and all I ever did was upgrade the video cards. I would have kept it for another year or two, but it started to crash intermittently due to some kind of hardware failure that I wasn't able to track down. |

Great responses and configs, I'm learning a bunch.
A question regarding cooling: I was looking at stage the hydrocooling stage 3 does that make any particular difference (other than looking amazing) or does the stage 2 radiator do the job just as good? With the "when in doubt go a little overboard" philosophy suggested by JamesAstro I looked at this configuration. Is this just more money for the same as the prior build or will this be more "future proof" with the hydrolux cooling? I really appreciate you guys taking the time to answer all of my questions. I didn't include it in the build but I will most likely buy a better warranty as well. I can try and answer some of your questions although my build is currently at stage 5 so it is pure speculation. The big difference between the stage 2 and stage 3 Hydrolux cooling is the cooling of the 2nd video card. Since your build is a dual card set up I would stick with the stage 3 or go back to stage 1. Understand that I was informed that the chipsets cannot be hooked up in this system at this time so that will save you a bit of money on the stage 3. I definitely went a little overboard with my build. Also if you go with the Haillstorm understand that it requires freight shipping which costs $399 but seems to be much better. |

$399.00 seems expensive for shipping. I could use that money toward a warranty. Is the hailstorm 2 that good of a case that it would warrant paying that much? If not I will just stick with the Apollo build

I can't really answer to which case is truly better. From what I've read the Hailstorm allows plenty of room for water cooling and expansion. I just got some pictures sent to me of my rig being tested and I can say it looks amazing. Also does case size matter to you? I ask this because the Hailstorm is much taller than the Apollo. As far as the shipping goes, I've watched some unboxing videos of peoples rigs that have been shipped freight and it does seem a lot more secure than the standard ground. Maybe someone here on the forums that have experienced it can validate that. I hope this helps.

Shipping freight entails placing the system and any peripherals you order in a wooden pallet and shrink plastic wrapping the whole works thereto. At least that is how my Aventum II came. You would think that being everything attached to a pallet it would be secure! Mine came with a disconnected RAM module that had to be ultimately replaced ( a second one was merely loose). So...... the shipping gods are fickle indeed.
