Topic: New build advice Posted: 15 Aug 2022 at 5:34pm |
Hello all,
I recently purchased a Velox. I honestly know very little about PCs and I'm super excited to buy one after being a console player for so many years. After doing a little more research online and in the forums, I'm wondering if I should've bought an 850w power supply instead of the 700. Other than that I'm wondering if anyone has any more general advice for my build. I have a 1440p 165Hz monitor if that helps. Here are the specs: Chassis Model: Digital Storm Velox Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7-12700K (4.9 GHz Turbo) (20-Thread) (12-Core) 3.6 GHz (Alder Lake) Motherboard: ASUS Prime Z690-P D4 (Wi-Fi) (Intel Z690 Chipset) (Up to 3x PCI-E Devices) (No SLI) (DDR4) System Memory: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz Digital Storm Performance Series Power Supply: 700W Digital Storm Performance Series (Supports up to an NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti GPU) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Optical Drive: - No Thanks Storage Set 1: 1x SSD M.2 (1TB Digital Storm M.2 Performance Series) (NVM Express) Storage Set 2: - No Thanks Storage Set 3: - No Thanks RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce RTX 3060 12GB (VR Ready) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Add On Card: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Digital Storm Vortex Liquid CPU Cooler (Dual Fan) (Fully Sealed + No Maintenance) HydroLux Tubing Style: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected HydroLux Fluid Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Cable Management: Premium Cable Management (Strategically Routed & Organized for Airflow) Chassis Fans: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Remote Controlled Advanced LED Lighting System (Multiple RGB Color Modes) Software Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks CPU Boost: Turbo Boost Advanced Automatic Overclocking Graphics: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) OS Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 Home (64-Bit) Recovery Tools: USB Drive - Windows Installation (Format and Clean Install) Virus Protection: Windows Defender Antivirus (Built-in to Windows) Office: - No Thanks Mouse Pad: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Branded Gear: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-10 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) Thanks! |

Yes, an 850W PSU would be a much wiser purchase. A PSU is a pain in the... to install, yourself, so we recommend you have some overhead to allow for a wider range of future upgrades. GPUs are going to need more power going forward, and 700W will limit you.
I'm also wondering if your choice of GPU will perform to your liking. For another $160 , I recommend a 3060 Ti, which is much more suited to running your monitor. Have a look at this: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-3060-Ti-vs-Nvidia-RTX-3060/4090vs4105 A 3060 Ti is capable of 90+ frames per second on high settings for most all but the most demanding games. If money is an issue, you'll find $168 can be saved on your CPU. The 12700K is a bit overkill just for gaming: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-12700K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-12600K/4119vs4120 There's virtually no difference in gaming. The 12600k will last a very long while in a gaming rig without having a lot of computing power wasted. I won't niggle anything else, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you make those changes. |

Welcome to GS. Congratulations on your purchase. Cretae has hit all the points. Do try to get a stronger psu. The Velox is a DS exclusive design and the window is on the right (when facing the pc) and the hardware is mounted upside down. It is very roomy and easy to work on when the time comes to upgrade. Enjoy. |

Thank you all for the advice! I called customer support a couple days back and swapped out some parts based on the the recommendations.
At this point, I'm just hoping that the 5-10 day shipping time is accurate. I'm not sure how much longer I can stay patient |

You can start the offerings to the shipping gods! It helps pass the time.

That is basically amassing a few bits of carton cardboard in the yard. Set them afire and dance and prance in a circular direction until you feel the gods have heard your plea. Some say it helps.
