    Posted: 22 Aug 2013 at 6:56am
Been away from PCs for just a bit since the laptop I have is a bit old and doesnt run much anymore.  Now planning on switching to a desktop and have a build I would like some advice on.  Here is the ticket number....

Saved Ticket Number: 863184

My main questions are this...

1)  To my understanding the i7 is a little overkill for gaming but great at multitasking etc?  But since I will be using mine for just gaming almost exclusively an overclocked i5 would be more than sufficient?

2)  Is that power supply adequate for the build or would I need a little more?

3)  To my understanding the 770 is nearly as good as the 780 so I opted for the 4gb 770 instead of the much more expensive 3gb 780?  As a reference my monitor will be around 22-24" with a resolution of either 1920x1080 or 1920x1200.  With this graphics card/resolution will I be able or close to maxing out games for a bit and they look good on the monitor?

4)  Anything in particular I should look for in the monitor other than resolution?  Do I need a higher resolution one?

5)  Will the stage stage 2 noctua air with standard chassis fans for enough for keeping it cool or should I upgrade to 120mm performance fans too?

6)  Plan on overclocking the CPU worth doing the same for GPU and memory boost?

As i stated previously this build would be used specifically and almost exclusively for gaming.  Examples:  BF4, Watch Dogs, Starcraft, Total War games, Elder Scrolls & Elder Scrolls online games, pretty much a wide variety.  Was trying to keep the build right around $2000.

Let me know if I'm missing anything else.  Thanks for any help!

Hi bmicinski....      That build looks real nice.
The i5 is all gaming needs.  The gtx 770 will max most games but not the heavier shooters, which would still play on High and look great.  To max out all games, a sli, 2x gtx 770 would be needed, but the single card you will be happy with.

If you want to save a few bucks, drop to 8Gb ram, all you'll need for gaming.

The Noctua D14 is an excellent cooler, quiet and very reliable.  I would stay with it.  The case doesn't need the fan upgrade.  Its 200mm fans will get it done.

GPU oc gives about a 2-4 fps increase in gaming.  I personally don't think it's worth the added cost and stress on the card but your call.

Grab the free t-shirt.  Its free.  Hahaha

For a new rig, I'd go with the newest OS, Windows 8, but its a love/hate relationship, so up to you.

Good luck.  Big%20Smile

Here's another build to consider...

863198 $2028

I changed the motherboard to support SLI (dual GPUs), downed the RAM to 8GB (easy to upgrade in the future), changed PSU to the EVGA (which is modular if a future upgrade/replacement is needed), changed the case to an equal quality but less expensive one and added the GTX 780. If you're planning on running stuff with a single card (for now) at max settings (especially shooters), the 780 would be a better choice over the 770 (20-30% more fps) and is closer to the Titan in performance (with the ability to add a second one down the road when they are cheaper). It just squeaks into your budget @ $2028 but is worth considering (also, upgrading to the Corsair 1050 for $57 now will save the hassle of upgrading in the future if your even considering SLI - if not, than the EVGA will be fine). As bprat22 mentioned, don't forget your FREE t-shirt!

Good Luck!!

I don't really think the extra cost of the 780 is really worth it for most people. The 770 sits at a nice point in the price/performance curve. An SSD boot/program drive would add more to overall system performance. I personally like plenty of system memory, I hate it when I have to wait for virtual memory to page in. ;-). Paging in from virtual memory isn't as big a deal with an SSD boot drive.

I suggest a couple of builds in another thread, that I think would be good for bmicinski: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/forums/home-office-bf4-config-tidf20900-pidf233186/

So I'm not planning on buying for a couple months.  Probably closer to the end of fall or maybe January 2014 depending on how much christmas stuff I need to get this year haha.  That being said would I be better off as far as maxing stuff out down the road doing a dual gtx 770 setup since I have a little more time to save?  Are some games still having compatibility issues with sli?  A friend of mine....and this was a year or two back so its probably different now; but he was having trouble getting getting both cards to even work for some games or having them optimized and use both cards power etc or something?  Can someone give me little bit better explanation?  Even when I was PC gaming I had never used a dual graphics card setup.  Thanks.

Nvidia usually puts out updated drivers as the biggest games are released. But, there can be problems even with those. So yes there still can be issues with SLI and some games.

SLI sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. As danjw1 said, nVidia releases lots of new drivers to help support newer popular games as they come out but that's still no guarantee. That's why sometimes it's better to get the best single card solution with a future option of SLI so that way even when SLI won't work properly, you'll still have a great single card solution... This is why nVidia made the Titan - to be the most powerful single GPU solution - and the GTX780 isn't far off on the performance of it.

Just my 2¢.

Ok cool.  I think I've decided I will switch and get an SLI compatible setup just in case and maybe just get a single 770 card for now.  It might not max out BF4 but that will really be the only shooter I play heavily so as long as it can run it relatively high smoothly I'd be happy.  Most everything else I'll play will be strategy/RPG related which I'm sure the 770 will handle find.  Then down the road I'll maybe snag another 770 for the dual setup.

The 770 is still an awesome card and will handle majority of games at high settings short of heavy shooters - and that's where the SLI 770 comes into play...

I don't think the Noctua will fit in the Virtue case, the size of the noctua is kinda large, but it might idk.

The allowed height on the case is 160mm and it looks like that is the height of Noctua.

Why you don't go with an SSD for the boot and programs drive? I honestly think that would help overall system performance more the then the bump from 770 to 780. Also the memory is shown as 2GBx4, you should ask for 4GBx2 for better overclocking.

If you game Windows 8 will have better DirectX 11.1 support and other performance improvements. It is personal choice, a UI that many think is broken, or better performance.

I went for better interface over possible performance.

The Windows 8 ui sucks and adding a third party solution to your OS to try and fix it and hope it does not cause other issues or get broken by MS patches seemed like a bad idea to me.

Plus who knows how much of that performance gain would be lost by the third party addon being added to the system.

If the Noctura doesn't fit then the H100i would provide the same amount of cooling. It's a closed loop system so no maintenance needed. An SSD is great solution to help speed boot & load times but could easily be added later. The 780 is good if you decide to go with a higher resolution (2560x1600). My choice with a new build is also Win8 as I think it'll offer more going forward (and offers a little more right now as well). Looks like an overall solid build with the ability to grow when needed.
