Thanks to Dave, Robert and now Kelly. Here what I hope to be the last version of my build. It is ordered and moments from Stage One.

The hope I have is that my PC would be future proof and run Crysis almost, if not actually maxed out.

My main question is did I order the correct OS? Should it be 64 bit or 32 bit Vista (Premium or Ultimate), which exact Vista?

Here it is:

Digital Storm Twister Pro Black,
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz 1066MHz FSB 8MB Cache
nVidia 680i Core 2 Quad nForce 680i SLI A1 Revision
2GB DDR2 Corsair1066MHz Dominator Dual Chan Extreme Performance
74GB Western Digital Raptor 10K RPM 8MB Cache SATA Extreme Speed, 250GB Western Digital/Segate 16MB Cache 7200 RPM SATA, Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS 7.1 Channel i/O Unit
Silent Artic Cooling TwisterBoost Overclocked
Windows Vista Home Premium
Samsung 22" Widescree Black High Performance Gaming Display
nVidia GeForce 8800Ultra 768 eVGA/Asus PCI Expres

Premium and Ultimate come in both 32 bit and 64 bit.

You ordered Vista Premium 32 bit.

Right I ordered 32 bit Home Premium, as recommended but I am asking your second opinion. What exact version should I buy, please be specific.

I got the 850 W

absolutely that is the idea to add another ultra in the future, I keep wondering if it is really worth it to go to 64 bit Vista and have to add 2 more gigs of memory...

Since you only have 2 gigs of memory I don't see why you would need 64bit. Theres been driver issues with 64 bit and really no benefit for a gamer unless you want more than 4 gigs of ram-as far as I can tell anyway. Nice setup you ordered. :)

I'm in the same boat though in considering if adding another 2 gigs(I ordered 2gigs) would increase performance by a wide margin. I figure i'll stick with 2 gigs and throw in another 2gigs if needed. From what i've been told 32 bit Vista wont show the full 4 gigs-only like 3 to 3.5 gigs-which is still plenty. Off to bed for me. Smile

64 bit does not need anymore ram to run smoothly than 32 bit.

Developers have said Crysis will benefit greatly from a 64 bit operating system.

If all your software and hardware have 64 bit drivers than there really isn't a reason why you should not make the switch over to 64 bit.

64 bit will run fine with 2GB of 800Mhz or faster RAM as SkyR said. Crysis may see up to a 50% boost in performance in Vista 64 bit. 4GB is nice, but not neccesary yet. 2 HDD in RAID 0 are faster than 1 Raptor in almost every respect. Have a look at this article. 2* 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM is $80 less than that Raptor drive.

Monstromo, the 800Mhz RAM will be fine for games but if you want better overall performance in your PC go with the 1066 Mhz RAM. The 1066 Mhz RAM won't give you much of an edge in games but it will be faster in all other ways. Games relies heavily on the GPU and CPU power.

Im anxious to see the improvemets in Crysis on a 64bit OS, espicially a %50 improvement. Maybe then more games/programs will be written specifically for 64bit and faster driver support for those that dont.  A pretty good article comparing Far Cry's 32 and 64bit version is at:

Im no technical guru but everything I read suggested that the differances between 32 and 64bit versions were minimal at best. Addressing more memory still looks like the biggest selling point-but having more than 4gigs of ram on a home computer seems a bit of a waste right now. Heres to hoping Crysis can change that and put out a game thats twice as fast based soley on the OS.

As sky said, I would definitly make sure all your hardware has 64 bit drivers though. Not just the components in your computer but perephials as well. Good luck to ya!

I went with 1066 memory, 4GBs of it, and 64 Bit Ultimate (thanks Kelly) and a high end sound card, and a 10K raptor drive for the OS.

I should be smoking! Thanks for all the advice. I have learned volumes over the last two weeks. I feel back up to speed on what and where the computer gaming market is doing and going. I felt so clueless for a while...

Nice article, I just got through reading it. I am totally glad I went with 64 bit Vista now. My building is intended to be as future proof as possible.

The only other thing I could do is get a faster processor and a second Ultra for SLI, but I thought that is just not necessary right now. I pretty much think it is the most bang for the buck at the moment wthout spending hundreds more on another processor.

It seems like the 6600 Quad is a great chip.

Yep, as long as all your hardware is supported 64bit is the way to go to future proof your system. Hopefully more programs/games will take advantage of it now that its becoming more mainstream.

The Q6600 is awesome and a great price. When you look at the next step up-the Q6700, you're looking at a $300 jump in price. Totally not worth it IMO considering DS will overclock your Q6600 on higher end systems to around 3Ghz+ for $25. Big%20smile I think you're right as well about not really needing a second Ultra right now, but its nice to have that option down the road. I think your setup will last a good long while with what you selected. Very nice gaming rig indeed! Thumbs%20Up
