Having a bit of constrinatioon if I've selected an inefficient build for what I need. Wondering if the gtx 3080 is a bottleck for the i9 3900k and if the ddr5 is worth it going forward. Likely only to be a gaming box with maybe light graphic work . I don't have a 4k monitor, game just fine on a 1440p acer predator IPS.

Would it better to go 4070ti - read it runs more efficiently than the 3080 and cooler and price is similar if not maybe a tad cheaper than the 3080?

Is the i9 13900k overkill for games? Would a i7 or i5 Raptor Lake be better for the long term? Plan on keeping this box for another 12 years lol like my old one...probably new video card eventually.

From everything I have seen and read the I9 13k is way overkill for gaming. Save yourself the $4-500 and go with the I5 13k. I made this choice of going I913k and I'm also only gaming. I feel like I'm going to be driving a Lamborghini with a handicap tag in the windshield. I also went with the 3080, no issue there for gaming. Probably get some better info from others on here though. I don't know much about the boosting or over clocking

The RTX 3080 is a good (value) GPU -- and I doubt you'd be disappointed. Nonetheless, I recommend you look/read:

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti vs. Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti: Battle of the generations | PC World
• Ryzen 5600X, ROG Strix B550-I, RX 6900 XT, 32GB Vengeance, 960GB MP510
• be quiet 500DX, i7 11700K, ROG Strix Z590-E, RTX 4080 ProArt + RTX 4070 Ti ProArt, 64GB HyperX Fury, 2TB SN850

So during the config process there's not a huge price differential between the 3080 or 4070 ti. The 3080 would require an upgraded psu of 850 vs the previous card.

And yes, likely will downgrade the cpu to either a i5 or i7...i9 is just dumb lol. Do you think DDR5 is worth the money for even future use, or would DDR4 last well into the future without issues? I was faced with this quandary 11 years ago with RDRam and that proved to be waste, glad I went with DDR3.

Thank you both for responses and helping me out. Still awaiting a build date, will likely make decision to the build this weekend and change it on Monday.   Thanks much!

Guide to RAM (Memory) Latency – How important is it? | CGDirector

RAM Latency Calculator

The (later) common DDR4 true/real latency for reputable brands is 10 ns.

For example:

3200 CL16

3600 CL18

4000 CL20

As far as I am aware, DDR5 is only starting to have kits that near that responsiveness.

For example:

Kingston Fury Beast

As good as DDR5-6000 CL36 (12 ns)

With that knowledge in mind. Here are some gaming-related benchmarks:

Don't waste money chasing RAM speed for gaming on AMD or Intel | PC Gamer

DDR5 vs. DDR4 Benchmarks on Intel i9-12900K (Alder Lake Memory Comparison) | Gamers Nexus (YouTube)

For reference:

The DDR4 is 3200 CL14 (8.75 ns) and the DDR5 is 5200 CL38 (14.6 ns).
• Ryzen 5600X, ROG Strix B550-I, RX 6900 XT, 32GB Vengeance, 960GB MP510
• be quiet 500DX, i7 11700K, ROG Strix Z590-E, RTX 4080 ProArt + RTX 4070 Ti ProArt, 64GB HyperX Fury, 2TB SN850

I was actually curious on going with the 4070 ti because the price difference isn't unreasonable. Is it worth going to the 4070 ti over the 3080? Or is the performance difference pretty similar?

Simple question with a pretty simple answer. Look here:

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-4070-Ti-vs-Nvidia-RTX-3080/4146vs4080

The 4070 is this gen tech, so it also has latest upgrades in Ray Tracing and DLSS. (Deep Learning Super Sampling. Running during gaming sessions sharpens/enhances your images.)

As far as the CPU is concerned, here's a look at that. This is a gaming-centric comparison of one CPU versus another as a gaming chip:

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i9-13900K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-13600KF/4129vsm1950757

Save the $480. The 3600KF is better for gaming than any i9 Intel that came before.
