    Posted: 25 Apr 2008 at 12:23pm
My new comp arrived yesterday.  I'll post a review and some pictures later.

However, priority is making sure I warn you married guys of a couple things ahead of time if you're ordering or planning to.

1. If your previous computer was a 5 year old stock dell that fit quite nicely in a small little desk in your "Wife's" living room.... with a 17' monitor.
Be prepared to tell her that the one coming is 3 times that size (950 case).. and/or be ready to live in your garage.

     - This thing is a gigantic high performance monster and I love it.   However, she almost fainted and asked if there was any way to hide how much of a nerd I am?... I told her we could put the windowed side against the desk...funny stuff.

2. Don't suprise her by convincing her to let you buy it because you cutout a ton of money and didnt get a monitor.... and then turn around and get a 22' widescreen monitor the same day as the computer arrives.  Even though she will hardly notice... she'll eventually check your bank account.

   - This seemed like a good crafty idea at the time... get the monitor as I drive out to UPS to pick it up and pretend it came in 2 boxes...I'll update you when she finds out......

3. Get a dual boot system and teach her how to log into her own OS and stay off of yours.  I'm letting her mess with Vista and do as she pleases... while all of my games are on a different boot.

   - That way, when she eventually gets to log on... hopefully it reduces any damage she can do with her lack of knowledge on what clicking yes on that pop-up will/can actually do.

If you have any other stories or similar advice... pass it on!

More to come... laters.

Too funny.  Fortunately, my fiance is understanding of my nerd side (probably to give her an excuse to buy stuff herself), although she did a double take when she saw the size of my case, and caught me rearranging the entire room to fit it better.

My similar experience was getting a new high def camcorder (which she knew about), and then ordering 2 new hard drives and a bunch of accessories (which she didn't).

I have to agree on the case size issue. My wife freaked out when she saw my 850 (formerly Ultra) case.  She went on about how she thought computers were supposed to be getting smaller.

One suggestion to DS... it would be nice if you took a picture of all the cases next to each other in the same picture for comparison sake. Even put a person in the background for reference.

It doesn't matter what color you paint it and how pretty you make it out to be, the wife will always change her perspective, tell you she never knew, accuse you of not telling her when you really did and think you weren't thinking of her when she knew it had nothing to do with her in the first place.

She is the all-being; Master of time, space and universe, and she is always right in her own mind.  Thank God for liquor!

My, my,... aren't we pretty brave hiding here in the forum bad mouthing "she who must be obeyed."  Sounds like you might be ready to join the He Man Woman Haters Club after all Ed!  Have you been drinking for all 23 years (as of this month if I recall) or is this a recent coping mechanism?

No, just a realists observation of the pseudo-dynamic that plays out like a sudden awakening from a dream that you could have sworn was real.  In other words, let her think anything she wants because the battle is really in the mind when it comes to marital warfare and the ground worth taking.  I save my worthy battles with her for the big stuff that has meaning.  You know, like justifying my need for a new riding lawn mower, bagger, tow spreader and strap on blower.  This, my friend, is a battle worthy of the taking.

Nevertheless, it still always boils down to compromise.  I get mine, but she gets her landscape project.  Maybe I should just take a couch and tell you all about it. Got a few days?

I jest.  We have a great marriage and we get along very well.  I just wish I could take my balls off her rear view mirror.  It's been 23 freaking years now.  You'd think by now I could go take a piss in the back yard without her handing me my pecker.

I have a corner desk with plenty of room. My 27 inch monitor is here and tuesday if all goes well my DS pc will be here. My wife bitched up a storm  befor and after it came about how big the monitor is. I can't get through to her how much less space it will take up compared to my 19 inch crt. I've had a few beers so i'm going to go take a leak out in the back yard.

I have not received my new DSO system yet, hopefully next week. lol
I really doubt that the case will so large that my wife will complain. Here is a picture of her and 2 of our home theater subs, which she enjoys them as much as I do, well almost. Wink

LOL LOL!

Now I've seen EVERYTHING!...

You're a very lucky man Justin, having a hot wife who enjoys the 20-200Hz spectrum, but please tell me where you live so I never inadvertently move in next door...you must have to redo the drywall after every movie you watch.

There is only 10,000 total watts going to the subs, so it will only make the clothes flap a little.  Wink

A few comments from a wifely point of view:

1. Be honest and let your wife know what you spent on the computer. It's better to be honest in the relationship, especially when a nice rig is so expensive... not to mention, it's far easier to remember the truth than to cover the tracks of a lie.

2. Let her know how big it will be. Not just the case.

3. For the sake of the free world, Justin, never turn your speakers to 11.

BTW, the Digital Storm computer is mine.

I'll agree that it has great engineering merit, but I can't imagine how your neighbors feel when you've got a movie night going.  I was one of those guys at 20 years of age that drove around in his extra-cab pickup with a sound system that would make your ears bleed.  Yes, I was one of those pricks that drove up behind you, or beside you at a stop light, and thumped his way into your hearts.  I'm surprised I never got shot.

Today, and nearing 45 in August, I put the mobile thump machine behind me and invest into a surround system for the house but, I live on almost two acres in a one to three acre lot community in a 3700 sq ft home.  Movie nights are hard to hear from the outside.   You my friend need lots of space around your house to keep out of the HOA's crosshairs.

May God be with you.

Oh, and harleyman.... If you need a ladder to dust the top of something, it doesn't need dusting. I doubt the plaster dust stays up there very long anyway.

See Bill, Ed and I are just old enough to be angry that we're old, not real old like you who's had lots of time to accept that you're old and be thankful for your oldness as a better deal than the alternative.

And Ed, I think the Constitution clearly delineates that if you have more than 3/4 of an acre planted in grass that you are entitled as an American Citizen to have a lawn tractor with any damn attachments you please.  I just watched that HBO special on John Adams and I'm pretty sure it was in there.

And Justin, dude, rock on with your socks on.  Amplification is a manly compensation device and there is some MASSIVE compensation going on here!  I'm just envious of the extra time, money and wifely support you have, so put on Master and Commander for me and cannonball yourself into auditory bliss.  (but please don't let your dog pee on the 10 guage terminal posts!)  Shocked

So that's why I'm always pissed.  If I had known it would've been this easy to figure this out, I would have signed up a long time ago with DS and dropped therapy.

I think I'll need a cell number just in case I need a back-up on the yard equipment.  You never know when you'll need a third party mitigator.

I'd love to hear more stories of how the good ol' wifey reacts to buying a gaming computer for other people.

I know I'm still hearing about mine.

Most recently... I've had to move the computer into the bedroom because of it's gigantic size..... you know what that means... no happy time after she goes to bed anymore!!

Let's keep the thread moving
