I have been looking to get a new computer and originally was going to go with Alienware, but friends told me they are overpriced and I would be better off building my own. I don't know all that much about computers so I was happy to find this site. I have a build that I think looks good but would like more opinions of people who actually know what is going on Just want to make sure I didn't mess anything up. Lots of options, lots of things could go wrong lol. http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=126830 Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. |

Only a few problems I can see with it. One would be the case. You have a case that was designed for thermal electric cooling, so you're going to be running hot. The liquid cooling will help you here, but you could switch to a different case and go with stage 3 cooling and still save some money. You also have way too much memory selected. When buying RAM you want to go with faster, not more. So quality over quantity. Besides, your operating system is only going to recognize 2.8 gigs at the most. Which means you'd be wasting quite a lot of memory with your setup. You could get a 64 bit OS, which would recognize your RAM, but you still don't need that much memory. I would also recommend checking out the Ageia Physx website to see what games the phsyx card supports. So that you can be sure you still want it. It only supports about 40 tittles and you may not want to play any of them. You may also want to consider going with one 8800GTS 512MB card. That video card will still run today's games at maximum settings (all but Crysis) and it would save you some cash. Then you could go out and get a second 8800GTS 512MB once the price drops and go SLI. Other than those recommendations, you have a good setup.

Thank you very much for your help. I switched some things around. Changed the case and the cooling. Went with a little less memory. I picked the phsyx card not really knowing what it was, so good thing you let me know I didn't really need it. And honestly, I picked liquid cooling because it sounded cool Glad I decided to ask here before buying.
There is the new configuration, hopefully that is a little better. Thank you for your time and if anyone has anything else to add it would be appreciated.

There's still a couple of things you can do that would be better. First, if you really want 4 gig of memory you will need to go with Vista Home Premium 64Bit instead of Vista Home Premium. Regular Vista can only address a total of 4 gig and this includes the Video Card(s) and other hardware so you would only see ~ 2.8 Gig of the 4 Gig you have selected.
Second, it is better to get a single card that is more powerful than the two in SLI that you have selected because that way you can upgrade later down the road by simply adding a second card of the same type. If you want to upgade the video and you already have Dual SLI cards, you would have to replace both cards to upgrade. I would go with the 8800 GTX 768 MB ACS3 overclocked card. It is only $34 more but will give you around the same performance as the paired 8800GT cards. Edited by gdhart - 28 Feb 2008 at 2:58pm |

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I don't necessarily have to have 4g, I just assumed the more the better I went with the card you suggested. But I read that overclocking could be risky. Which is why I didn't select anything else to be overclocked. Seeing as I don't really know what any of this means, should I have selected other things to be overclocked too?
Again I thank you for taking the time to help me out. I think it is obvious I could use some help

The particular Video card I suggested is a Factory Overclock so should not be that much of a problem. If you are still leary of the card you can go with stock 8800 GTX card (which happens to be the card I have).

If you aren't worried about it, I am not worried about it lol. I just don't know much so I was just asking. I heard that overclocking could cause damagae later on. If the factory did it though, should be ok. Thank you for your help, you probably helped me more than I know.
