OK DS forums... You guys have been awesome so far in helping with my system choices. Now that my system is in the hands of Fed Ex, I want to be prepared for when it arrives.
I am looking for some opinions on what are the must haves to install when I get my new system. Obviously I need av/firewall software. What else should I put on there to get my system up to speed and keep it that way?
Also looking for any programs that you just like or find useful. I have not used Vista extensively so any tips or tricks for the OS would be appreciated.
Replies that give the name of the program, why you like it, and maybe even a link to where it can be acquired would rock.
Thanks again and looking forward to responses.

Firstly, I'd ask if you have a good surge protector/UPS.. given the money spent, that'd be my first stop. The stuff DST said is generally good to go with otherwise. |

I have a surge protector atm, but I am in the market for a new one. I had a couple APC UPS units that finally wore out a few months ago.
Any suggestions on what I can get that will offer protection without breaking the bank? My system will be using the 1000w corsair power supply if that matters. Also, any recommendations on a good gaming router? I have about a 2400 sqft house and will be running a laptop and an xbox 360 wirelessly in addition to two networked PCs. Get at least a 1500 VA true sine wave UPS if you can find one locally or order it from The Egg or Amazon.
Make sure it says it is true sine wive with both over volt and undervolt protection without having to kick in the battery. You can expect to pay between 250 and 500 bucks for a UPS like that depending on brand and source. APC, Tripplite and Cyberpower all make UPS that qualify, I trust APC the most, you will get differing opinions however. Dave ![]() |

Thanks for the UPS info Kliebor. I need to get on that this weekend.
I am also wondering what the difference is between spyware and a virus? I have ESET installed but it seems that Spysweeper is also recommended. Is this redundant or do they serve different functions? |

I use a CyberPower CPS1500AVR and I love it. This one costs around $300. I have a 46" Samsung HDTV, 1000W Home theater system, my old gaming rig with 750W PSU, modem, router, NAS and even my desk lamp plugged into this thing and it never goes above 1/2 load. Without power it lasts for about 40 minutes with everything on. About the gaming router, I would go with any Linksys gigabit router with wireless-N. You'll just spend more money for a router that says "gaming" on it when you can easily optimize it for computer/xbox live gaming yourself. Compatibility with DD-WRT is also a plus. I use a Linksys WRT600N that I paid about $200 for a few months ago but is now discontinued to make way for the WRT610N. I got that particular router because I wanted something a little 'high-end' but more importantly so that it was compatible with the DD-WRT firmware. My sole purpose for using the DD-WRT firmware was just to keep track of my monthly bandwidth usage because of Comcast's 250 GB cap. At first glance the menus look pretty complicated but there are tons of options and stats and it is easier to set up QoS and port forwarding using this firmware. |

eset is for anti virus and firewall but for anti spyware spysweeper is kings, it has least amount of false positives and grabs what others leave behind. |

I ordered spysweeper, but I see that eset also has a spyware module. Is it preferable to run them together or should I disable eset spyware? The more I go the less I know ![]() |

I would say standard logic applies here, never run two active scanners for the same thing.
IE 1 Virus Scanner 1 Firewall 1 Spyware Scanner Otherwise you will end up with a slow unstable PC Dave ![]() |

spysweeper works great with nod32, you are not being redundant or will have any issues, eset does not scan for spyware the same way spysweeper does.
you don't have to disable anything, just run them side by side you will be fine. I know many people just like myself that run spysweeper and eset and have not problems what so ever. this is not the same as having two anti viruses or anti spywares, so no conflicts will happen here. |
