Budget:
$1,700-$2,200

Expectations:
I'd like to be able to play current and soon to come out first person shooters on high settings. Games like Battlefield 3 (when it comes out), CoD:BO, L4D2

Usage:
Games mostly, FPS and simulations

Specifications:
CPU- Intel i7 950 3.06 Quad-Core
Video Card - GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB
RAM- 6GB DDR3 1600

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and thought this was the best place to ask my questions. My last computer was ordered 5-6 years ago and it broke about a year ago and I started looking at new systems but I'm lost; since when I was getting that computer my AMD 64 was pretty damn good, and now CPUs have 6-Cores rofl.

Those are the basics. Should I be sticking with intel and nvidia or go to AMD and ATI? How is the CPU, card and RAM?

Well I'm not gonna give a 950, there is not point to go with old technology.

but before we even get there, your res is a problem, so I just want to be clear:

The gpu power it takes to run your res is next to nothing, however if your res ends up being higher ( maybe you made a mistake, maybe you bought a new monitor), than the gpu chosen to run 1024x768 will fall short at say 1900 x 1200.

So we need to know what res you plan on running with this pc, is it gonna be 1024x768 for the next 2 years?

Well its an old monitor, I guess I should be getting a new one then?

Hows the Acer 22" high performance gaming? It runs at 1680x1050

If not a intel 950 what would be a good cpu? I've never had intel before, I used to have all AMD

LOL then you are in for a shock as far as performance goes, specially with the new 2600k.

I'm not familiar with tn panels to be honest, what is the budget for the monitor?

there are a few way you can go about this, we can config you a system that can handle 1900 x 1200 res, then in a few months or something you get this monitor:

Dell UltraSharp U2311H 23

its on sale now for $279, I have seen it as low as $250, the reason for recommending this monitor is because it has an IPS panel, which means that it trumps any TN panel you can name me in picture quality.

or we can config a system for you for 1600 x 1200, and you get a cheap TN panel monitor now that runs that res.

IMHO first option that lands you with the 23" dell IPS panel is the best option.

so

for 1900 x 1200:

Here you go Ticket# 532492 --- $2068 (To see this build click here)

Ask DS specifically for this fan to be added to the top, so you endup with 4 x 200mm fans:

haf 200mm non led fan

So the plan for the above pc is this, in a few month you get the dell 23" and this pc with one 570 will do great, however this pc can handle 2 gpus in sli, so after upgrading to the dell monitor, if you see you need more gpu power then you can just drop in another 570.

If you think you don't need or want to spend money on sli ability, then you go with something like this for 1900 x 1200:

Here you go Ticket# 532493 --- $1773 (To see this build click here)

Copy of Specifications:

Ask DS specifically for this fan to be added to the side, so you endup with 3 x 200mm fans:

haf 200mm non led fan

so the above can still run games at high setting at 1900 x 1200, few games like metro will give you problems, you would need sli for games like that, which this system can't do.

this system does leave room to upgrade to the dell monitor now, but if you need sli, then this pc can't do it.

now those are 2 options going that route.

But lest say, you just want to go with the asus monitor at 1600 x 1200 res, then this is what you would want:

Here you go Ticket# 532494 --- $1503 (To see this build click here)

Now this system can't do sli, but will run 1600 x 1200 res great, also at that res, you don't need sli for pretty much anything.

All 3 configs should be updated with an intel 320 120GB ssd for HDD1 and the 500GB will be pushed to HDD2, HDD setup is suppose to be like this:

HDD1 = fast small drive: os/apps/games

HDD2 = regular large drive: media/personal/work file storage

so these are just ideas tell me what you think and if you have any questions.

Wow thanks. I like the first and second options. And that monitor looks really nice, my birthday is in early june, so I can probably get that in another month or so. Just a question about the video card; is the 570 on par with the 580? Is it worth adding a 580 or just sticking to the 570? I won't be adding another card, if I add another card, until the end of summer.

I think I'm in for a big shock with performance, since my last computer had only a single core CPU and a 500mb ATI video card.

I remember right before I stopped gaming it seemed to be the more RAM you had the better, was that just because of the lack of CPU and video card power? Or just nonsense?

More RAM = Better? No. Common misconception that a lot of computer shops in my old town took advantage of, made people waste their money. Get as much RAM as you think you need and a little more for wiggle rooom, typically, 6GB is plenty (in this case it's either 4GB of 8GB, so 8GB is what I'd recommend).

Yeaah..you're in for a performance shock haha. For a month after I switched from Dell's to DS, I couldn't tolerate the speed of my school computers at all, haha.

The difference between 580 and 570 at that res, where it counts, is not worth the money at all.

In the old days you were dealing with 1GB or 2GB of ram so yes more ram was better, now in days tho we are dealing with 6/8GB of ram and that is more then a gamer or average user would need, also we have 64bit OS now that can see all the ram.

Ya you are in for a big shock, and another one when you add that ssd as HDD1 down the road.

when you do get it, what you wan to do is clone the current HDD to the ssd to move everything, OS/apps and etc and all in one shot.

then once you boot off of the ssd and see it working fine with the os and all, format and push the 500GB to hdd2 for storage.

you can follow my clone guide here
