Currently while i am waiting for my new computer to be made, i have a quick question. How would i install my old computers hard drive into my new digital storm computer when i receive it and if my old hard drive has microsoft xp and the new one has vista will there be compatability issues or what will happen there? Hope to get some replies. Thanks

well its gonna be difficult to to do that.
first off, each drive has its own OS, you can only boot off of one drive at a time. now lets get a few things clear. when you say move the old HDD to the new PC, what are you trying to accomplish here? mover your XP install to the new PC? or are you just trying to move files? |

i would like to be able to move just my music, a few games, and some other important files. However my current computer that they are on is dead. The hard drive in my current computer is fine but other components hit the bucket.

OK then here is how its gonna work, you can't move your games or applications.
You can however move any media/personal files. However in doing so you will not be able to use XP on that drive. what you do is, add that drive as a second or third drive to your system, you system will then destroy the boot file of the XP drive and then show you content of the drive. so for example you will be able to go into program folder of the XP drive and try to run an app but it won't run. but you can move files from it back and forth and when you are done, you just format it and use it as storage drive

Cool, at least i can move all my music library and files. Where is the boot file located and do i delete that as soon as i start it up?
Also how would i format the hard drive after i get everything cleaned up off it? Edited by shocktop - 13 Nov 2008 at 12:27pm |

when you add the old drive to the new system and boot up windows, it will automatically take care of the boot sector of the second HDD, so you don't have to do nothing.
once you have move your files, double click "my computer" right click the second drive and choose format

The wait will not kill you... well anymore than 1 more day waiting kills anyone... as you grind off another 24 hours of your limited... life
