Specifically the liquid cooling - is it needed? I do not intend to overclock but at the same time I don't want to tear the system apart to add extra heat sinks etc on the CPU or the graphic cards and I worry about over heating and getting VPU recovery errors from the video cards. What do you think? As far as hard drives go I like to have one for the system, one for data and a third large enough to back up the other two. For key board and mouse I like wireless. I currently have a mxlaser 1000 mouse which works fine. My keyboard needs replacement. As for operating system - I currently have windows xp professional. I am kind of afraid of going to Vista. Any advice here? I currently have a NEC E700 CRT monitor that I like and which works great. I usually have the display at 1024 x 768. I don't play the most advanced 3d games but the main reason I am shoping is to get away from a ATI HD3850 AGP card and I would like to do a little future proofing on the video end. Also to get away from ATI and their drivers. Any reason not to go with the Nvidia? Motherboard wise - this is one area I don't mind spending money on. I have never had a ASUS board before. The reviews seem ok for this board. Any reason to upgrade to another board? I would like to have one IDE connection available for me to move some of my software from my current system. Hopefully the video cards will not block the IDE connection as one review seemed to imply this could happen - not sure. I would have liked to get a MSI x58 eclipse board but this is not an option on the list. I would appreciate any advice you wish to offer. Thank you |

As far as liquid cooling goes, some will tell you its for the extreme overclockers only, some will tell you it will give you a more stable OC. Both are true. Its up to you on that. Air cooling will work just fine, but if you plan to push your OC , LC may be a better choice for you.
As for your HDDs i would go with a Velociraptor for your OS, and then 2 750's for storage and backup. if you prefer 2 drives you can go with just 1 750 though. I reccomend either a Razer lycosa or a Logitech g15 keyboard, both are real good. Vista is really good now that SP1 is out. If your going to be running dual GPU's and 4 gigs of ram, you will want 64 bit vista, as the XP 64 bit is buggy. Also i noticed that you selected Vista Ultimate. Windows Home Premium will provide you with everthing you need. That nec monitor at 1024x768 is not going to need dual video cards. if you do decide to SLi your rig, i do suggest you get a monitor with a 1920x1200 resolution I dont see any reason to not go with nvidia . there products are great, and there service is the same. Only reason you would wanna update your board is if you wanted to run ram at speeds higher then 1600 mhz Couple of other things. Dual gtx280's vs Dual gtx260's. You will not see much of a difference in games and being able to run games at max settings. What you will see a difference in is benchmark scores. if your not a benchmark whore like myself, the GTX260's will save you a lot of money with just about equal performance. Get your Peripherals such as your mouse and keyboard elsewear. you will find them for cheaper If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Edited by jtspectra2 - 28 Dec 2008 at 4:57am |

man you got a lot of things you don't need.
first you want to oc, you can pay for 940 at 2.93GHz or pay for a 920 OC it, and have a speed of 3.8GHz. you only need one card for your resolution but I left you power to add a second gpu if you ever should need it. you HDD setup is wrong, you want to put the os/apps/games on the veloci and store personal/media files on the second HDD. if you want to back just your personal/media files then you can do so in a third HDD but your os drive backup needs to be on an external, basically with HDD1 you want to clone it to an external. vista 64bit is the way to go. not sure what this whole ide blocking is about. you can't move yoru software games or os from your current pc, only your personal/media files. if you want to use an ide, all you need is an ide to sata adaptor or I can show you external enclosure for $30 that will take an ide or sata drive and then let you connect to the pc via usb or estata. as for your config this is what you want: here you go Ticket# 221223 --- Price: $2948 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports Dual SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1333MHz Corsair XMS3 Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition) Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 300GB Western Digital VelociRaptor (10K RPM) (16MB Cache) (Extreme Speed) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition) Optical Drive 2: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260+ 896MB (216 Streams) (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 3: High-Performance Liquid Chilled FrostBite System For CPU Liquid Color:UV Blue: Glowing Non-conductive High-Performance Fluid (Requires H20: Stage 3 & UV Lighting) Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (UV) (Creates Glowing Effect For H20: Stage 3 UV Fluid) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Yes, Overclock the processor as much as possible with complete stability Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: Razer Tarantula Gaming Keyboard Mouse: Razer Lachesis Gaming Mouse (High-Speed Gaming Grade) External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty I know you got questions so ask away |

Thank you for your reply. You gave me alot to think about. DST4ME: I also appreciate your reply and information. I need to think over your suggestions. I like the price you came up with. Can you help me understand your comment relating to Vista versus XP and my existing games etc. If I understand correctly the games would need to be reinstalled rather than moved but generally speaking existing xp games should work on vista? Utilities like Norton Ghost etc would most likely not work with vista and would need to be replaced. What if I did something like go with xp professional again even with the 6 gig of ram. Then move to windows 7 latter? All my existing software would continue to work as is for now. I realize the memory over 4 gig would not be used. Would this work for say a couple years? vista sees more ram as you know and the 64bit in some cases can be faster.
I think I was not clear about moving games and apps. it not because of your OS that you can't move the games and apps, it just not possible to an installed app or game from one XP drive to another XP drive in a different system, so vista or XP, you can't move your apps. what you will have to do is reinstall everything in the new system, most games will work on vista but anything 16bit will not work on 64bit vista, I'm sure ghost has an installer for vista/64bit and so will many other things. while you have vista, you can use an app like vmware which will allow you to install XP in it and run it from your vista 64bit, this way you have both OSs. I really see no point in going with XP now and 6GB then upgrading to windows 7 at which point you are going to have to reinstall everything anyways, windows 7 is based on vista anyways. to be honest as great as vista 64bit is, I don't see any reason for going with XP, and I'm an XP lover myself. I love XP but its time to move on to bigger and better things. |
