Hello - Thanks in advance for any help you can give me with these options. Did I miss anything? Any change you might recommend instead? My budget is approx $3k without the monitor.
Specifically, I think I need special help on the mobo, processor, and video card combination. For example: Will the new 780i along with the 8800 GTS (G92) be a better board for the future than the 680i with the A1 revision (or the Asus Maximus) along with an 8800GT?
Also, the Stage 2 cooling takes care of the CPU, but should I order extra fan(s) for the Graphic card?
Last – any preferences between the ULTRA case and the EXTREME?
Thanks for any and all feedback.
Scott

Unless you play in high resolutions, SLI is not worth the money. So the Maximus Formula is a better choice. If you plan on upgrading the GPU, go with a 8800GT or lower.
Unless you plan on doing tri-SLI, the PSU is big overkill. A 620W will be able to handle the setup. |

I see what you mean. So basically, you’re saying not to choose the 780i board unless I use dual cards in SLI. I don’t plan on it and, if there are no other substantial benefits to the 780, it would seem going with a Maximus would be more future-proof. I like the 8800GT, but have my sights on the 8800GTS 512MB as the performance is top notch and looks to have better cooling. I’ll save some money and swap to a lower wattage PSU. Any thoughts on the cases? By the way, what are your experiences with DS's overclocking options? Any recommendations? Edited by Scott - 29 Dec 2007 at 5:26pm |

I prefer the Ultra case. But if you are going to put the computer on the floor, I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like cleaning out the dust inside the case.
The Q6600 is usually overclocked to ~3GHz. No experience with ram or gpu overclocking. Ram overclocking I wouldn't recommend. The difference in speed and timings is not noticeable unless you are a numbers freak. |
