I would suggest getting Windows Vista Premium and a Q6600 or QX6750 if you are going to use this machine as a media center.

Except a lot of the newer games will be vista-only, won't they? :O Or at least optimized for vista Edited by Donut - 06 Aug 2007 at 10:23pm |

It will be a while before that happens, spending about $100 for Vista at a later date is better than sticking with all the trouble and headaches (not alone the time you wasted). |

well maybe i am not sure but i would think they would be able to run on XP because so far Vista is really un-stable as of now so later on i would think they would yes be mainly for Vista but able to run on XP.

Crysis and UT3 will run better on Windows Vista because the games were designed for DX10 from the ground up. Windows XP will be able to run the game but it won't look as good since it can't do the DX10 effects even if you have a DX10 card.

yes pretty much the bottom line is to either get Vista and wait for SP1 to come out.

I had heard that Microsoft is considering to have DirectX 10 compatible with XP with a release. Has anyone else heard that or something like it?

Nope, I don't think Microsoft would waste their time with DX10 on XP since most developers will still make their software & games backward compatible with DX9. So the consumers will just have to choose Vista XP Microsoft wants everybody to switch to Vista and 64bit so they get more money! =) |

It is a fact that Microsoft will not offer DX10 as an XP tool. I think it was said that in May or June of next year, XP will no longer be supported. What gets me, is that last August, they finally stopped supporting 98/ME, I don't understand that why they're nixing XP so quickly since XP is a far more stable OS (it took it damn near 4 years to get it that way, but I digress).
So I will repeat. DX10 for XP is a hacked up stripped down version of DX10 being released by a hacker group. It may work, but it won't be a true DX10.

My guess is that they're dropping XP in order to try to force OEM builders to move over to Vista. Dell was offering XP for a little while on some of their machines, but I think it's just their XPS line now.

DX10 will definitely work on XP, however some features will not be available and it may take some time.
"This article doesn't cover the main aspect of DX10 that MS uses as an excuse to not port DX10 to XP. That is, in Vista, the kernel schedules GPU tasks. This allows multiple clients to use the GPU simultaneously without having to have intimate knowledge of how every client in the system is using the GPU. In that way, it is just like CPU scheduling allows CPU multitasking. This was needed for Vista because the system uses the GPU to render the UI, while a game may be trying to use it too. And this cannot be easily ported to XP. Note that GL doesn't do this scheduling either, and it cannot since GL is outside the kernel. However, under XP, the system doesn't use the GPU at all, so the game using the GPU is the sole client and you don't need this scheduling unless the game itself has multiple tasks to schedule. So what MS could do (and if I were NVidia I would beg them to do) is bring DX10 to XP with the caveat that games can only have one task using the GPU at once since there is no scheduling. This would allow XP to have much of the DX10 functionality. But the executive version is MS isn't going to do this because they are using DX10 was a lever to sell copies of Vista. P.S.: the article in question is useless in arguing this point. Poor choice by the submitter." |
